I'll start off this post by saying two things. First, this post is not meant as yet another "BCS system sucks, playoffs are the only rational choice" thread. For the purposes of this post, the system we have is the only one we have. Secondly, for reasons that will become quickly apparent, "get off my lawn."
Out of the all things that bother me about the current bowl setup, the thing that grinds me the most is the schedule. Two things in particular. First, the shift away from the tried and true tradition of having all the major bowls play on Jan.1. Second, the IMO outrage of having minor bowls all of a sudden get to play post January 1 games.
Here is the list of bowl games played between January 1 and January 7:
1/1: Outback, Gator, Capital One, Rose, Sugar. Ok, admittedly not so bad yet. But:
1/2: International, Papa Johns, Cotton, Liberty, Alamo. Really?
1/6: GMAC. Huh?
1/7; BCS Championship
Are there not enough days in December for the GMAC, Papa Johns and the rest to play? Would not a better schedule be:
1/1: Rose, Fiesta, Orange, Sugar.
1/7: BCS Championship
Now I don't mind throwing out a tradition, if it is replaced by something better (I can hear you saying "playoffs" and I agree sort of but have to adhere to the premise of this post). But how in the hell is this bowl schedule better than what we had? Part of the bowl tradition was the later you played, the better game you were in. And all the best teams and games played New Year's Day. And nothing was better IMO that watching the major bowl games all together in a one day orgy of:
- morning hangover cures
- followed by hair of the dog
- lunch nachos and wings
- renewed drinking all day
- and watching 4 great Bowl games.
The reason for the 1/7 game is obvious. But why in God's name did we have to let the meek (bowls) inherit the earth? I'll repeat: 4 bowls on January 1, and that's all I will tolerate. Someone make this happen quickly and I will reward you with riches beyond your wildest dreams. For most of you, that means a date. With a girl.
My lawn is crowded, please vacate it.
