Bowl game DC?

Submitted by DISCUSS Man on

What is the protocol for coordinators leaving?

Given that we haven't had a coordinator poached by a power 5 (in name only in Maryland's case) in a very long time, how does this all work?

Will he have an option to coach the bowl? If so, I say no. Eff that noise.

Let Jackson or Mattison coach the bowl game, but look elsewhere for DC imo.

LSU / Florida are both good teams so whoever we play I hope we're ready on D

Let Jackson & Mattison co-defensive coordinators coach the bowl.  Basically let Mattison coach Jackson on being a coordinator.  If a slam-dunk fit comes from outside, hire him.  If not you have a month of practice to audition Jackson for DC.

Oh, and Durkin is done.  You don't take your first head job, then tell your new employer you aren't going to start working on assembing your staff & beginning recruting until after you coach in a bowl for yoour former employer.

As for whether his interviewing during the week of The Game... It didn't help to have his focus diverted.  This is a convenient excuse, however.  The defense wasn't the same the second half of the season.  It was a combination of stronger opponents, injuries and the best player being used a hell of a lot on offense (not coincidentally coinciding with the offense's improvement.)

With or without Durkin Michigan is in a lot better place than it has been.  Good luck to him, but I hope he doesn't take any damn recruits!

"xenial," which, as we all know, is a word to describe the "influence or effect of pollen on a structure other than the embryo," which is clearly apropos to the conversation.

Depends.  If they're able/willing to hire a new DC in the next few weeks, I imagine him.  If the search remains ongoing through the bowl game, Mattison makes the most sense.

Would I let Durkin coach the bowl game. He will be too busy recruiting and would put a half ass effort, the same way he did for the OSU game!

Yeah, a team that was 5-7 last year and 9-2 this year should have totally crushed last year's national champions and a coach that has lost about 4 games in four years at Ohio State.

We only lost because our DC was interested in another job!

Yes, he should leave, and I'm not saying under bad terms or anything, but he moved on and now we move on. Mattison coached these guys last year's as the DC, I think he could handle it. I would like to see a win in the bowl game, not a DC thinking about the future, which for him is not at Michigan. No hard feelings, just life.

after he was hired at Nebraska, so there is that precedent.

and yes, BECAUSE that was a NCG, it's a bit of a different scenario here.

I say let Mattison do it for this one game.
