Bootlegs for Denard - 1995: Oregon QB Tony Graziani coached by Al Borges

Submitted by markusr2007 on

Some of the "bootleg" stuff Denard will no doubt be running off of Borges' gameday menu:

1995 Oregon vs. UCLA: QB Tony Graziani scores TD on a bootleg pass option play.

(No. 14 is star Oregon TB Ricky Whittle!  Seems like Borges always had great TBs to work with.)

1995 Oregon at UCLA: QB Tony Graziani getting destroyed on a bootleg pass play, but not before hitting receiver 49 yards downfield for 1st down.

With valuable content. Between these and the interviews from today, and the MGoBoarders are really adding worthwhile analysis and educational stuff. Good job.

I absolutely love that play call on 1st or 2nd down near the goal line. It helps to have a mobile QB but I have even seen some Frankensteins score on this play call.

I love the bootleg in short-yardage situations.  The clinching TD in the 2000 OSU game by Henson is one of my favorite plays.

....with your assessment!

Gimme bootlegs.   Gimme naked bootlegs.    I love watching an OLB bite hard on a fake handoff up the gut, only to realize they just got their undies pulled over their eyes as the QB non-chalantly cruises around said OLB for a TD.

with Denard, NO ONE is going to completely abandon being his shadow on any bootleg, but that means either hugely open slot receiver / TE just behind that LB shadow, or Denard 1 on 1 against a LB that the opposition coach "thinks" is fast enough to shadow Denard. One juke its "Hello Heisman!". If Borges utilizes this bootleg set correctly, AND Denard can consistently hit a 5--10 yd crossing pattern on the run, its GOLD JERRY, GOLD.

I guess the "bust" part is potential accuracy issues?  Can Denard consistently hit downfield receivers while on the run?   But I think accuracy, in general, is the issue whether Denard is dropping back in the pocket or rolling out.

Or the other "bust" could be Denard getting hit under the chin by a rocketing LB/DE that he can't elude.    But I find this scenario less likely due to dilithium and all.

is setup by the off-tackle run. You need to establish that running game before that play really works. I hope we can adopt that downhill running mentality. We certainly have nowhere to go but up from the Spring game. Sept. 3rd. CANT WAIT
