Boomer & Carton interview with Hoke

Submitted by MGlobules on

Radio interview, M grad Dana Jacobson in the studio. The issues, for better or worse, are the team's worsening record over three years, whether he's on the hot seat, and who's going to shine on the field this year:

Good guy, but I think we can say at this stage that Hoke is not a great interview. Says some admiring things about Devin Gardner, but mostly it's boilerplate, somewhat defensive stuff.

In the recent interview with Wojo, Brandon said Hoke's job would not be in peril this year if the team struggled, but how can it not be? Common sense, for me, would dictate that Brandon be a little bit more cautious. Still, I'm ready to be happily surprised!

To be fair, when has an AD ever said "yeah he's donezo if this season isn't good." I also think the questions would have been better if it were actually Boomer and Carton doing the interview.

Highly Questionable with Le Batard actually has some entertaining interviews from time to time, too. Not the dull, generic questions where you already know what the answer is going to be.

3 and 5 win seasons are pretty extreme circumstances. You don't fire a guy without letting his recruits mature. Especially when that coach nearly equalled the win total of his predecessor in his first year. Frankly Your post causes me to question your intelligence. There, I said it.

good. I'm not a big RR guy buy you could easily say that Hoke turned a functioning offense into an incompetent mess, so then, Hoke is bad.

He actually responed "Now why would you ask me a question that dumb?" But that's not what I'm talking about. That was not Lloyd. That was Lloyd, for a minute, pretending to be cut from the same cloth as a Bo or Woody, and he responded like he thought they might. He never handled the media like that, except for that one instance.  I'm surprised you didn't pick up on that.  And actually, it was a very good question. We had field position, a good qb and good wideouts. He kept opposing teams in a lot of games, some that bit him in the ass, especially during the ooc portion of our schedule.

Who cares if he's bad at interviews? He's not being paid to sound awesome on interviews. Also, I liked his interview at the Big Ten Media Days. He was short, to the point, and rejected media fishing attempts.

Hoke can recruit, and he can find staff members that can recruit. In my opinion, that's the most important thing right now. He's filling the cupboards, and hopefully we'll be able to start redshirting freshmen. When we get to that point, then I'll worry about the hot seat talk. The inherited offensive line (lack of) talent alone was enough to bury Hoke for a few years.

Brandon doesn't give two shits if the Football team wins. As long as he is bringing in money he is happy. I expect he will give himself another raise here soon

Brandon is cut from an ultra-competitive mold. Revenue is just one way to keep score, but the teams' win-loss records get him just as much praise or criticism. No doubt he wants success with everything (even of his intent might be personal glory and political ambition). Success breeds resources and more power.

If he cared he wouldn't have hired a coach purely on the basis of him knowing the fight song or willing to walk from Cali to Michigan. Iim confident after this season we will see a lot of these mindless sunshine blowers retracting their statements and pretending they never liked Hoke.

The entire football fucking world sees that he is in way over his head yet idiots on this board refuse to.

That is because he is a Michigan State fan from the RCMB. Every one of his points could be cut and paste into a comment on that waste of a site. He used "sunshine blowers," which is used all the time over there. His posts are insufferable because he copies them from the most unintelligent website known to man

I've been trying to figure out if Clark is a buckeye or sparty troll. My gut is telling me sparty. You can feel the undertone of self loathing...Buckeyes have the same hatred, but you can tell that deep down they think they're awesome, missing teeth and multi-role family members or not. Definitely sparty.

No matter what happens on the fb field this year, and I think it will be a decent to good season, the roster keeps moving in the right direction. I think that alone will keep him his job, but if it didn't, he'll certainly be leaving a "Urban" like situation when he walked into Columbus with the perfect fit for his offense.  The man has worked his ass off here. Why would you try to minimize that effort? Not saying he's the best game day coach. He has to prove that. But coaching jobs seems to get easier the heavier their rosters get with talent and experience.  You should know that based on your profession, that being a professional asshole, of course.

You know, you had told me after the last ban that you would sit back for a bit and observe the culture of the board as I suggested, and this was so this incarnation would not end as frightfully as the last one did. That being said, misplaced anger and trolling that is not only not amusing but is in fact abusive towards others tells me that you were simply paying me a bit of lip service and had no sincere intention of being anything better or more civilized than what you are right now. Criticisms are one thing, but what you've done here is win no friends and...well...a previous mishap, if you will, earned you your current point total.

Why can't we ever have constructive criticisms here? First you get people saying that I hope there are 20,000 empty seats at games because they hate Brandon then you get people who say that the punter will be our top player in 2014 because Hoke sucks so bad aka 1927/1928. Can't we present our arguments without sounding like rival trolls?

Every time Pat Haden was asked the same question about Kiffin, he has his job was safe. Even the week before he was fired. As the AD, you say your coach's job is 100% safe until the moment you fire him. Anything less is a lame duck which totally screws recruiting, either for your current coach or the next one.

that Hayden was lying about Kiffen.

In regard to Hoke, I seriously doubt he is in jeopardy unless the season is truly disasterous coupled with Jimmy H. quitting the Niners and campaigning for the job.

Everything is in place for this to be a great/B1G championship caliber team this year with the glaring exception of the OL -- which is most likely a year away from the same.  2015 is the year for Hoke and his recruits to shine and/or be judged.  With apologies to Desmond Morgan et. al., the only big losses going into 2015 are JMFR, Frank Clark, and (probably) both Devins.

If 2014 is an 8 or less win season and 2015 is less than stellar then I can begin to imagine Hoke being shown the door.  However, if the 2014 line doesn't show a strong upward trajectory over this season I could see Funk "deciding to pursue other opportunities" at the end of the season.

As a side note, I sincerely hope that the OL is at least passable this year for Devin's sake.  Given his patience with and loyalty to the program over the past 4 years he deserves it.

It was just a year after Bo guaranteed he'd be in AA for as long as he wanted by beating "the greatest college team ever assembled."  Actually, you give us the TD they took away right after the half, and although we did dominate them all day by coming up with the big play whenever needed, the score 24-12, would have had us beating them by a solid two tds and a 2 pter.  However, my point is the following year, with a rebuilt OL, made up of sophomores, and that's what they were referred to, "the super sophs," OSU went thru the BIG undefeated and despite an upset to Stanford in the bowl game came away as National Champs. So it's time we put to bed the excuses associated with the inexperience of this OL. I know there is talk of a true freshman possibly taking the position of one of the players that started for us last season. If that occurs, some will interpret it as "Damn, the OL really is weak," wheres others will see it for what it is, "If a freshman can do this, especially considering the ratings of the young men he is beating out, then inexperience, especially being in the program for three years is plenty of time to start producing adequately," and adequate is all we need from this unit to make this offense capable of showcasing all the talent we have on this side of the ball.

They were not all linemen, offensive or otherwise

They were seniors in '70

The super sophomores included three-year starters Rex Kern, Jack Tatum, Jim Stillwagon, John Brockington, Mike Sensibaugh, Jan White, Bruce Jankowski, Tim Anderson, Larry Zelina, Mike Vladich, Doug Adams, and Mark Debevc. Kern, Tatum, and Stillwagon have since been inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.
Hayes referred to them as the best freshman team he had ever coached. In fact, that recruiting class probably saved Hayes' job. Don't forget that in '66 they were burning effigies of Hayes. In fact, they chanted "Good-bye Woody" in the stadium.

3 of them are in the CFB HOF

Yep, just another average group of youngsters. Jack Tatum, for example.

Every article written about those teams is laced with superlatives. To pull that team, or those individuals out as a comparison to a team that has seen multiple scheme changes and staff changes is ridiculous. They also had a full year to prepare together on the freshman team, none of them were thrown into the fire due to a lack of depth.

The past two seasons have played out just as they should have given the transition and lack of players in certain positions, lack of upperclassmen, RR's odd recruiting practices which we are still paying for, majority of talent in the underclasses, etc...  Having a different couch probably wouldn’t have mattered at all.  It could have even been worse.

Hoke is recruiting like a madman and recruiting accounts for at least 80% of success in college ball.  The future is bright.

Hoke is not wrong to focus on a character-first approach to coaching, and his emphasis on helping all of his players to graduate and, through football, understand the values of toughness & hard work and generally prepare for life as young men. This was also the way Bo approached the game, and I think we can all take pride in saying that this approach embodies doing things the Michigan way. If the cost of doing so is an extra couple losses, I am personally okay with that transaction.

Further, if Hoke had poor coordinators or didn't recruit well, perhaps I'd be more concerned, but on both fronts Hoke appears to be doing more than fine. Obviously we'll have to wait and see with Nussmeier, but it appears the pieces are in place so that Hoke can be more of a mentor to these young men and focus on graduation, hard work, and preparation. The results will follow.
