Boo Birds for RichRod?

Submitted by CCBlue on
I was not at the game and did not hear/see it on the telecast, but this is certainly disappointing to read from The Detroit News. It almost rings of a Freep piece: http://apps.detnews.com/apps/blogs/bigtenblog/index.php?blogid=2021 Anyone at the game who can provide some color? It's really frustrating to read on a number of levels, but especially since those of us real fans know it's a big recruiting weekend.

Of all the "messengers" in the Detroit media, Angelique is the best friend the UM program has. She was reporting it from the vantage point of being perplexed that it even happened. And, as someone already posted, the bandwagon-jumpers will be back as soon as the wins start happening.

and it totally pissed me off. The applause and cheering were definitely louder, but there were some soft boos in there too. I was at about the 40 yard line, low in the blue on the west side and it sounded to me like it was in the south west part of the arena, but maybe it was more than that? Graham and RichRod had a strong man hug at midcourt. I recall reading comments from the Space Emperor saying there was so much love in the locker room this year. Well there was coach-player love in that man hug. Eff the boo-birds.

Boos were DEFINITELY overshadowed by cheers. Plus, in terms of timing, the roars for Brandon Graham were still rolling when the PA announcer announced that the award was being presented by RichRod. I sat midcourt just behind the students and it really didn't sound like more boos than cheers. PS Did anyone see the halftime show. I had very low expectations when they announced it but Steve Max was strangely entertaining.

It went down pretty much as the blog describes. Mostly cheers, with a few boos mixed in. They probably came from the grump old guys sitting in the gold section. All in all, I would say it wasn't that bad. I was sitting up front in the bleachers, and I was trying to start a "Rich Rodriguez" chant. I thought it would show the recruits that we were behind the program, but no one seemed to bite. Oh well. I think our enthusiasm for the win reflected really well on our fan support though

I was sitting down low, a few seats behind where Verne Lundquist and Clark Kellogg were positioned. When RR was introduced, to do the presentation to BG, there were HUGE cheers from the normally-sedate Crisler crowd. I heard some boos for RR. Very few of them. It sounded to me like it was from somewhere way up in the gold seats, opposite us. (It would have been up behind the MaizeRage side of the Arena.) It almost ounded like it was a group of 10 or 20 people, all together. And it sounded really half-assed. Anyway, the cheer-ratio for RR was about 3,000 to 1. Incidentally, I did not see David Brandon at the game. Joe Parker waqs there, Bill Martin was there, RR, BG and a bunch of football players were there. Denard was there; I had my portable spectroscope with me and we detected his wave-length. I did not see Devin. Lloyd Carr was there, sitting next to the GM ex-President Fritz Henderson. Read whatever you want into that arrangement.

I saw Rita with him, and then at half all of the football players stayed out for what seemed like an extra ten or fifteen minutes before filtering back in, with play already under way in the second half. The football players must have been having a meeting; maybe they were all watching Denard race electrons in the tunnel. By the way, I do believe that Rich Rodriguez is probably the most fan-friendly head coach at Michigan at least since Gary Moeller, and maybe in history. He was signing autographs, posing for photos, etc., etc., etc. I've seen every Michigan coach since Bump Elliott in situations like that (football busts, basketball games, baseball games, hockey games), and they have all been very decent. But none as friendly as RR. The negativity that the Free Press has deliberately created for him is truly astonishing.

I was sitting a few rows behind RR, Gardner, and the other recruits. As soon as the game ended, Devin ran out into the middle of the court to dance around with the students. He seemed really excited and happy to be there. Because of the way he was acting, I am going to guess his EE was granted. Edit: After going back and reading previous MGOBOARD posts, apparently I am late to the party.

No matter how many wins or losses there will always be RR haters. If this was their moment in the sun, then I hope they enjoyed it because there must not be much happiness in their lives.

that the boos came from UConn fans? They could have been booing to support their Big East brethren. Or maybe they were booing because they play Michigan opening game next fall? Is there anyone who was near the boos to confirm that they came from Michigan fans? I'd like to think that our fans aren't ignorant enough to boo our football coach at a basketball game when recruits are visiting.

"I'd like to think that our fans aren't ignorant enough to boo our football coach at a basketball game when recruits are visiting." Of course we'd all LIKE to think that but let's be honest... these are the same casually passionate fans who think that Michigan should have been winning the last two seasons because 'Come on, we're Michigan'.

Although the boos are complete BS, I think there is a silver lining in that the constant barrage of BS from inside and outside of the fan base has created a more unified core group of M fans who have become almost militant in their support of Michigan athletics on all levels. I know that I have developed a zero tolerance for booing and/or anything that I deem as malicious or derogatory that is directed at any M player or coach. If you're screaming boo Rich Rod in the first quarter of a game when the score is 0-0 while we are in the middle of a drive and happen to be within 30 rows of me....you will know my wrath....

I was pretty high up in section 38 and also heard some boos coming from that area. This same group also took it upon themselves to shout some "colorful" things during Michigan FT attempts. I distinctly remember hearing "punk bitch" about 3 or 4 times, most notably during one of Manny's attempts.

I agree with the comments about RR being fan-friendly. He posed for countless photos and signed a bunch of autographs. Agreed, the Football section was noticeably bare to start the second half. Other Observations.... I saw Coach/Father Fred Jackson (EFF ELL EYE ENN TEE) with his left arm in a sling at the OSU game. I saw Lloyd leaving the game in a black Lexus SUV.......He cut right in front of family at Hoover and Green.

Honestly, I didn't notice the boos at all because the cheering for BG's time on the court was basically thunderous. He got a standing O and jogged over to the student section one last time to celebrate with us for a few seconds. That was really cool and REALLY made me wish it was like, say, August right now....

that BG would move to the other side of the court at the half. UConn was shooting towards him in the first half and even though it's not football and UConn never played against BG anyways, if I were a UConn player and I had to look towards BG while trying to shoot, I would probably be too worried about being massacred by him flying out of the stands and mauling me to really concentrate on my shot...

I thought the Hamster Race, the two students racing in the giant plastic balls, should have been an instant replay booth review. The guy who lost ran off to a big lead, then was unfairly rammed by the eventual winner. Actually the winner never made it to the end of the Court and did not in fact finish the race. Discuss. Or better yet discuss the Giant "Simon Says" game.

that next year, when BG is starting in the NFL and his team plays on a Sunday night game...he will say nothing but "Michigan" to identify his college. A good man for sure. I hope he tears it up and wins a couple SB rings to make up for his lack of team success in college.

Not that many boos but anyone that booed should start rooting for the Sparties or whatever. There are recruits in the building and we have so called fans booing a college football coach. Hopefully next time they actually do something wrong they will get their just reward.

I was at the game, in section 38 at the next to last row from the roof. There were some people behind me dressed in U-M garb who booed Rich Rod. I did turn around and ask them how well they thought that would go for recruits who were considering coming here to have the coach booed. In response? "uh..." Righty-o. MORONS. I am apparently turning into the old guy with an onion in my belt. You bastards get off my lawn!

a few. I was at the game in the front row of the upper level. There were a literally a few boos. I would even conservatively say less than 50, some of whom may have been UConn fans. There were probably about 25-30 UConn fans scattered in the upper level. Even if they were all UofM fans, it was so inconsequential that no, it wasnt worth writing about.
