Article behind a paywall indicating tha Kaleb Ringer and Joe Bolden are both going to enroll early at Michigan so they can go through spring practice. If this is the case that means their scholarships don't count towards the 2012 class and we can sign two more than the Big Ten maximum of 25 guys correct? (so its 27 assuming that the scholarships are available).
Bolden & Ringer to be early enrollees - What does that do for recruiting
IIRC Jarrod Wilson was planning on it and was on track to do so, so it would put total commits up to 28 if scholarships are available.
EDIT: Beaten to the punch further down the thread.
I guess it all depends on further attrition and granting players the 5th year. I'm not sure if we get to 28, but I think that is the max allowed by the B1G as long as we stay under 85.
Also, the Jersey Shore episode of Philly was great.
Edit: pwnd by Brian's faster typing
Yeah, Jarrod Wilson. That means Michigan can take 28 if they have the room. Since they've already got 24 slots and a couple fifth years who aren't playing much they will probably have room.
That is not correct. The 85 total scholarships has nothing to do with backdating. The only thing that the NCAA checks when backdating is that the backdated scholarships and the scholarships from the previous recruiting class do not exceed 25. We had 20 scholarships last year, so the NCAA would allow us to backdate 5 scholarships for early enrollees. However, the Big Ten has a limit of 3 backdated scholarships per year, which puts our hard cap at 28 scholarships, with 3 of those being backdated.
If a walk-on earns a scholarship, it's often with the understanding that it may be temporary. It's different than how it is for a recruited scholarship player. (This, of course, does not apply to a guy like Kovacs, who has clearly earned a scholarship for the rest of his career.)
does this change our chances with Danny O? I hope so, I'd still like to see him sign with us. You can never have too many legit d-tackles.
The coaches put the kabosh on DOB. Very unlikely he'll be signing with us.
Where did you hear this and why would they do that?
The short version is Pipkins is our future NT so we're looking for a three tech. It appears the DOB has not impressed scouts this season and some people project one of our large DE recruits will grow into a 3Tech. So we're taking Pipkins and then sprinkling miracle grow over the larger SDE recruits.
In terms of depth and the way Mattison seems to want to play it makes more sense to take 1 Tech DTs. 1 Techs are the key. Take one every year and those who can't perform as 1 Techs can move to 3 Tech or a DE can grow into it.
Also this year specifically, the team benefits more from using the remaining spots on OL, WR, and true CB than a DT who is getting lukewarm scouting reports (given that odds are Godin can be grown into the next RVB).
it doesn't explain why users keep characterizing the situation as the coaches cooling on him or putting the kabosh[sic] as turbo cool put it. I can see that he may not fit what the coaches want or need at this point, but users are painting it like something dastardly has happened or he's a bad kid.
I've just heard he looks "meh" in games which is why the coaches cooled. Nothing bad about him, just that he's struggled and doesn't look so worthy of the 4* ranking Scout gave him. Hence the cooling.
I didn't mean to imply you were degrading him or any other player. Comments make a lot more sense when they come with an explanation and not just a knee jerk reaction.
Edit: How was my original comment redundant when nobody else has made that comment on this thread? I don't care about the negging, I was just curious if I've hit a nerve or something. I put these here because I couldn't edit the original due to response.
I don't see how it was redundant at all. Maybe slightly off-topic since talking about O'Brien specifically rather than # of scholarships. However it does tie into what we have to offer remaining so I don't see why it got downvoted.
It was down voted because there are a lot of dicks on the board.
Out of the negging options, "redundant" and "overrated" are the two I suspect people feel okay using when they're negging to be dicks.
then why wouldn't they have at least allowed Schutt to visit? This team needs more than just 1 NT.
No idea on that one. The only thing I can think is the coaches fealt Schutt was just using us to get back at ND. I could see a situation where Schutt was mad at ND rejectign him and thus flipping to their rival. The issue there is Schutt isn't here because he wants to be here, he's here because he hates ND. That's the kind of kid that decommits later when he's had a chance to calm down and think things through.
Also IIRC Schutt wasnted to visit before Pipkins committed. Schutt may have been rejected to show Pipkin's we were 100% focused on him and lock him down as a commit. It may well just have been timing and not wanting to risk Pipkin's cooling when we took someone else.
Given the fact that BWC seems to be making progress, some of the SDE recruits will probably be big enough to play DT as true frosh and players like wilkins, I see how you can feel ok at the 3 tech, but tbe NT position is really scary. You pretty much have to assume that either a true frosh or a guy who isn't getting much time now is the starter and that the backup has similar experience. Another option with a DT who could play either interior spot would be hepful.
Speaking of which, it would be wonderful if anyone in the Pipkins, Goudin, Wormley, Strobel group was going to be enrolling early.
Jarrod Wilson, right?
Wilson's also an early enrollee so we would be able to sign 28 if we could.
Issue has always been the 85 overall limit and not the 25(+3) yearly limit. As of right now, we have 24 scholarships to offer with 22 commits. Still need attrition if we want to get to 26 or higher.
Early enrollees allows us to go over 25 as we plan to but 85 is the more important number.
Does that 24 number include projected non-renewed 5th years? If not we could get to 26/27 pretty easily.
No, that's as it currently stands. And yeah, 26-28 would be pretty easy to achieve at this point.
Yeah, it seems pretty unlikely at this point that Terrence Robinson and Mike Cox would get fifth years. That gets us safely to 26, but there aren't any other clear-cut candidates for a non-renewed fifth year. As players get squeezed out of playing time as the year goes on, however, attrition is always a possibility, if not a probability.
If Terrance keeps up his "special" play as a gunner, they might want to keep him around for his 5th year. He can be our John Wendling.
sweet (i.e. I think you're right). Would be good to link the article though, even if paywalled, so the site can get their publicity (and hits from those w/ memberships)
...and so certain ninjas can include said article in Thursday Recruitin'.
Boy I'm glad I refreshed mgoboard before I posted mine.
This is what was given for free:
Michigan's 2012 recruiting class is impressive at linebacker. That group may be a little bit better come August 2012, because two of the committed players plan to enroll at Michigan in January.
I think we can count the EE for last years class, but I don't think that really changes the overall numbers because 85 is the number we actually have to be concerned with.
Either way I'm glad these guys want to get a head start.
The issue is the 85 limit. Early enrollees don't change that.
The issue is the 85 limit. Early enrollees don't change that.
The 85 roster limit is not a concern. Plenty of room for 28-29 new players in 2012 (considering early-enrollees and a couple RJrs graduate and don't come back)
That is awesome, i cant wait to get Joe Bolden in here! After two of his games i've seen he can be an instant contributer. He will need to bulk up a little tho.
I forgot is he being recruited to play MLB or WLB.
I thought his name was Joe.
I have a feeling Bolden is going to be a really good player for us.
There are a couple underclassmen who are unlikely to return next year, too, so I'm guessing this will be a full class of 28.
Any idea who might leave? Just curious.
Yes, but speculation usually gets "negged" or deleted, anyway.
You should put it on TTB.
I would love to, because it would probably get a lot of traffic...
...but I think it would be a little irresponsible.
That is true. I'm sure you don't want to be known for doing that kind of thing.
Curiosity is killing me now!
for another DT then. Even if it's not DOB (though this would be my preference), I'd sleep better at night w/ another.
Enh, if we have to start a pair of true freshman DTs next year, we're screwed. As it stands I'm staring at a line of BWC and Pipkins/Wilkins/Washington/Ash with trepidation.
If we reach the point on the depth chart where DOB plays next year we're equally screwed if we toss in Wormley, Godin, etc at the 3 Tech spot. I don't really see how another 3Tech makes anyone sleep better about the line. Another NT would be nice but I don't think we have a shot at any this year, so I'm nervous about the line right up until we get another we get another NT or two in 2013. If Pipkins or Ash have the same kind of struggles as BWC, it's panic time on the NT side.
So in terms of using a scholarship on DOB it doesn't buy us much. I'd rather invest in other areas this year.
of a boulder, rolling through the line and occupying blockers. Someone big who can move, but mostly someone big who can knock people around. I thought this was DOB. Call it NT or 3T. We don't really have any 3T's on the roster right now, so a recruit at that spot would be welcome. A young Mike Martin to pair with Pipkins would be perfect.
Right now GMAT is playing every warm body he thinks can help, including true freshmen. Since Ash and Wilkins (another 5T people are talking about moving to 3T) are getting zero time in this environment, and QW is getting very little, there is every reason to take another true DT this year.
I'm looking at it more long term. We might bone ourselves with lack of depth this year by not taking DOB. However if we end up with Pipkins, DOB, Wormley, and Godin as DTs, plus Ash and Wilkins right in front of them, that's 6 scholarships for two starting jobs. I dislike spending that many scholarships so close to one another.
In terms of long term success and keeping the depth chart well stocked, I'd rather not take another DT. I think we need to bite the bullet and get what mileage we can out of Ash/Wilkins so as to get proper spacing back on the depth chart.
But not Wormley. He seems like a SDE all the way, as does Strobel. And while Godin's tape looks very good to me, I'd still be buying an elite player at that position. Especially since GMAT seems to love rotations. DL and OL are the most important in my mind. We're loading up on OL, and I assumed we'd do the same with DL. For me, everything starts there.
that is all I have to say.
I agree and would also say that if the coaches dont see DOB as the kind of talent they are looking for at 3tech then they would be better off waiting and getting someone who they really like at the position for 2013. Im not saying that DOB isn't good or anything just that if the coaches truly don't have him rated as highly as we do then there is no point in just taking bodies that fill up roster space.
We would have senior Will Campbell, redshirt junior Quinton Washington, redshirt sophomores would be Ash and Wilkins (who has been playing SDE even though he's listed at DT), and then freshmen would be Pipkins, Wormley, Godin, and potentially O'Brien.
Personally, I think that would be a pretty good spread. And history suggests that at least one of Pipkins/Wormley/Godin/O'Brien wouldn't last beyond one or two seasons, due to injury, transfer, academic ineligibility, etc.
Simple analogy, the eagles and the lions both wanted to improve their defenses, the eagles went out and got a bunch of top db's and small pass rushers and their lack of size in the trenches is hurting them, the lions beefed up the dline and made everybody better in the process.
Wait - you mean Fairley right? The guy who hasn't played yet? I get your point, but not a good analogy.
Personally, I think Washington has looked decent. Not great, but decent. Give him another year of coaching (he's already got the size and strength), and I think he can be a serviceable starter.
It's from Tim Sullivan, so yeah, definitely deserves the link ($): http://michigan.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1270593
Two more OL, Payton, Darboh, Wright .... and Dunn?
That'd be a nice finish.
Garnett and Banner would be sweet! I'm still confused as to what happened to Diamond though. If I would have had to guess who Michigans first recruit of this class would have been, I definitely would have guessed him. And now we don't even seem to be on his radar.
Does anyone have a breakdown of what positions the freshman linebackers will end up at?
Bolden is a MIKE, that is all I know for sure. I would imagine Ross ends up at WILL, but what about RJS and Ringer?
I would have slotted Bolden at SAM, RJS and Ringer at MIKE and Biggs at WILL. But now I'm hearing Bolden is a MIKE so maybe that slides RJS out to SAM.
Bolden and Jenkins-Stone are MIKE linebackers.
Ringer and Ross are WILL linebackers.
We don't have any SAMs in this class, unless Ojemudia ends up there.
them realize that kids cant wait to get to Michigan
Hot one day, cold the next...
I know not everyone is high on him. But if we truly can take 28...he should be one of them.
This is good to hear; there should be good competition for some of the backup LB spots if these kids can get a jump start. Truthfully I have been hoping to hear more about O and D linemen interested in enrolling early. Our O-line is so thin next year that injuries could push true fresman into the starting lineup; sure would be nice if a couple of them were a little ahead of the learning curve.
I would think Payton, Garnett, Darboh...Wright? I don't feel great about Dunn, shaky as his committment has been.
What about that Ekakite guy from Illinois? He would be a good pick-up if we want another DT.
If we cooled on O'Brien because he's not elite enough, then I don't know why we would go after Ekakitie now.
Don't forget Campell. He will probably be playing NT next year.
How is all that "off topic" ?
The point of the thread is recruiting, is it not?
