Everyone Murders

"We're here at Ohio Stadium, joined by 10,000 alumni and 84,000 truck drivers..."

I know that Ufer walked on water in some circles, but I'm actually not a fan of that quote.  I actually hate it.

Nothing wrong with being a truck driver.  Truck driving is honest and difficult work, and the work attracts all sorts of people - including the very bright.  So using it as a putdown always was a bad look in my book.

Being a Buckeye supporter is another matter.

God Bless every one of your cotton pickin' Maize and Blue hearts!

Michigan Football is a religion and Saturday is the holy day of obligation.

Rest in Peace Bob!

"Little Gordie Bell ... he can run 15 minutes in a phone booth and never touch the sides!"

"Runs like a penguin with a hot herring in his cumberbund!"

"Fritz Crisler must look down on Chuck Heater and say, 'What a great back in the old single wing!'"

"... and they're tearing down the M-Club banner ... oh, they will meet a dastardly fate for that!  But the M-men are getting the banner back up ... and here they come! ... take it away 105,000 fans!"

And what I grew up on: "Two tight ends and a balanced line ... Huckleby deep and Davis close ... Ricky Leach under center ..."

Johnny winging Wangler to Anthony the darter Carter he used to say and Ricky the peach Leach those are just a couple of his sayings. Moellers monsters have their Maize and Blue dobbers up today was another one that sticks out to me he was the best.

but we were tied with a decent Indiana team.

I still have to go with Henne to Manningham in '05 against what turned out to be an 11-1Penn State team.  Good to be the spoiler on that day, down 4 with time for 1 more play...

As a kid, if the away game was lucky enough to be on one of the 4 Detroit stations, we would go to Grandpa's (E. Kingsley, Ann Arbor) turn off the TV sound and put Ufer on.

They came to bury Michigan, all wrapped in Maize and Blue.

The words were said, the prayers were read and everybody cried.

But when they closed the coffin, there was someone else inside!

The Bucks came to bury the Wolverines, but Michigan wasn’t dead! And when the game was over, it was someone else instead!

Twenty-two Michigan Wolverines put on the gloves of grey, And as Revelli played ‘The Victors,” they laid Woody Hayes away!

"There isn't a Michigan Man out there who wouldn't want to go out and scalp those Spartans right now"

I know he actually said this referring to the "buckeyes" but I got to believe that Ufer would have something masterful to say before this one.

Ufer still plays in my head while I am in the stadium watching the Blue. Just like the radio earpiece was on the Wangler to Carter Indiana TD. I seriously thought he would have a grabber right there on the radio.

the night before the Michigan-OSU game in 1979.  Really incredible.

If you ignore all of his colorful sayings and homerism, and just listen to his play-by-play announcing, he was VERY good.   Back when only a few games each year were televised, listeing to Bob Ufer was your only option.  And his descriptions of the plays and everything going on was the next best thing to watching the game.

You know, aside from all his memorable quotes, Ufer was also an excellent play-by-play announcer.  Back then Michigan wasn't on TV most every week like they are now.  Seeing them on TV was something special ... most weeks it was via radio.

And listening to a game broadcast with Ufer was like watching a fine painting being made ... he'd describe the setting, the mood ... everything leading up to the kickoff.  And then during the game he'd do an oustanding job describing the down-and-distance and play set.  During the play he'd typically maintain good composure and stay right in stride, continuing to describe the play and the results.  Simply outstanding radio.

He was quite a departure from the other play-by-play announcers at the time.  Being such an open fan of the team wasn't considered ... right ... or something back then.  So most would play it right down the middle.  Ufer was unabashedly pro-Michigan, but that did not stop him from also being an excellent, excellent radio play-by-play announcer.

One of the saddest moments of my life was Ufer's farewell 'appearence' at the Iowa game Oct 1981(a Mich loss),he died a week or so later. He and Bo were Michigan football for me.I tear up every time I think of either of theem.

was amazing.A Michigan player would score and Ufer would immediately tell the audience how many touchdowns that player had in his career, his hometown etc. He'd recall some long ago Michigan Man who scored a similar TD years ago.His extemporaneous 5 minute riff after Wangler to Carter was almost as exhilerating as the play itself.

I grew up - like so many others - listening to Ufer call Michigan games.  He is the primary reason that fall Saturdays driving around corn fields pheasant hunting is my all-time favorite ever thing to do.  Nothing but pure enjoyment...

Anytime I hear the voice of Bob Ufer or Ernie Harwell I am instantly harkened back to my childhood listening to the radio with my Dad.

I could still hear Ufer calling a Butch Woolfolk TD run in my mind.

Missed the Indiana game in 79 to go visit some friends at CMU.  Seemed like a good game to skip as we were suppose to roll them so I sold my ticket and headed to Mt Pleasant.  Coming home late Saturday I put the game on WJR as I hit #23 South with about four minutes to go and realized this was NOT going according to plan.

So I'm in heavy traffic on 23 when Wangler hits Carter fort he TD pass to end the game and Ufer loses his mind.  All I can hear is him screaming.....the George Patton horn sqawking and knowing something very good must've just happened but I have no clue what it was.  Every car around me starts hitting their horn and Ufer is almost catotonic on the air.

My sisters friend went to UM. She bought some extra student tickets (perhaps yours...thanks).

It was a moment I'll never forget. Running onto the field after the game. Not even knowing where I was for what seemed like forever. Pretty cool moment for an 8 year old.

The radio played a replay of Ufer on the way home. That was amazing to hear.

Being from the west coast, did not know what to think of him at first.  He sure grew quickly on me, and his passionate, hilarious and unique style made me quickly realize what a treasure he was.  So glad he helped introduce me and my family to Michigan football fandom.  RIP, Mr. Ufer, you were and always will be fabulously one of a kind.

In Ann Arbor is listening to Ufer on the radio.  I can still remember the call on AC's TD against Indiana!  Amazing stuff.  The only other announcers that caused me to fall in love with listening to games on the radio as a child, Bruce Martin and Sid Abel.

GO BLUE!!
