Bob Ufer- "Big Blue"

Submitted by UMxWolverines on
well i was listening to a bob ufer cd today, and as after michigan beat #1 notre dame, he recited a poem. In the poem, he says "bo's big blue.." looks like michigan has been "big blue" longer than some think. so it shouldn't bug people when people refer to michigan as "big blue" also on a side note, i bought ncaa 10 today for ps3. my name is WolverinEnDETfan if anyone wants to play me.

I've been a card carrying member of the Big Blue is Kentucky crowd. Apparently I was wrong. Some of my favorite Ufer quotes: "All of us up here in the water wonderland never forget that Ohio is still a four-letter word." Ohio Stadium is "10000 alumni and 74000 truck drivers." And, of course, he called Woody Hayes "Dr. StrangeHayes".

He might have said it once in a while, but he didn't normally use it - and you don't hear anyone else associated with the program use it.

But Ufer's entire statement was from one of his poems, not from a catch phrase that he frequently used.  One Line state's "Bo's Big Blue" and one after states "Bo's Big Blue Machine".  Bo's Big Blue is clearly a good use of alliteration.

This isn't evidence that it was frequently used.  What Ufer frequently said was "Meechigan" and "The Maize and Blue".  Making a conclusion that the usage by whatever TV announcer is using "Big Blue" came from the Bob Ufer poem in the Rick Leach ND game of 1977 is making quite a leap.  Using Big Blue confuses Michigan with other entities that already use it.  So why does anyone who thinks Michigan is special want to use it?  Maize is the distinctive color of Michigan.  We do cheer "Go Blue", but we do not cheer "Go Big Blue".
