Crazy timing.  I am definitely not a fan of watching coaches walk away from their teams mid season.  I'm sure he has his reasons but sends an awful message to the players.

While the classless comments have begun, let's hold back on the shittiness until it's clear there's not a health condition involved. Very odd for a coach to escalate a retirement twice unless for health reasons or scandal... And there's been no smoke that I've seen for the latter

This feels a little like the Spurrier reignation.  He may have felt he wasn't giving it all it deserved - best shot for the program might be to just let the next guy start now.  They just had a very strong run  and he knows it will be hard to maintain - probably right.

He was talking about it after the final four so not a total surprise.  Appaently Alvarez knew it might be coming.

He's earned the right to give his top assistant a shot at the position. Dick Bennett got things going in the right direction. But, Bo made Wisconsin what it is today. 1995 was the first year they made the tournament since the mid 20th century. They were Northwestern/Rutgers level bad for 50 years.

Got us Gary Moeller. Who would of been a hell of coach here if not for one bad night. This happens all around the country. Wisconsin Basketball was a steaming pile of shit until Dick Bennett and Bo Ryan. Greg Gard has been with Ryan the entire time. He deserves a shot to coach for half a season.

I thought I remember he had wanted to retire in between seasons as well and then walked that back?  Not sure.

Dont have the hate for him like others do - or Wisconsin in general.  For a non conf team (wait - still in conf? Oh) .. well for a conf team that seem to do things the right way and actually care about academics to the point MSU steals 1-2 guys from them every year now in football that cant quality for the Badgers.   And specific to Ryan when he broke down during the final 4 run due to his dad I could see the heart of a vampire.

It's pretty awesome what he did. It sounds like he wanted to retire at the end of last year. However, his chief assistant, Greg Gard, was busy helping his father battle cancer. Bo knew if he left at that time, Gard wouldn't be able to get his fair shot at the job (due to his commitments away from basketball). Gard's father passed, and Ryan gave it one more semester to give Gard time to get reassimilated. Now Gard gets at least a semester to make his case to be head coach. Pretty fucking awesome by Bo Ryan IMO. That's an old school loyalty that you don't see as often these days. He really made a statement for "his guy", who coached under him for 20+ years.

Gard was consumed with helping his father. Basically, there was no way he could be a head coach while dedicating so much time to his father/family. His father passed in October, thus freeing him of that burden. Ryan didn't leave mid-season -- he stayed an extra semester to buy his wingman some time to get his personal life in order. Amazing loyalty by Bo. Here's some info on the cancer ordeal ... http://m.host.madison.com/wsj/sports/college/basketball/men/badgers-men…

Loved his 'old school' way of emphasizing what is important and reminiding players of their responsibility and accountability.  Any time a player turned the ball over, they had to AUTOMATICALLY take themself out of the game and accept a towel from the incoming substitute on their way to the bench. Guess what Big 10 school always had the lowest turnover margin?

so a player takes a play off he is a bum and lazy. a college leaves mid season when the ship is going down ie Spurrier and they are congratulated. Bo may have a health issue and I'd so I understand, but Spurrier just plain quit.

Is coming from. He's saying when they retire mid season and the team "happens" to be excessively stinky that year, it does seem that they are dumping them. It's kind of like Kareem Walker's point about people ripping on recruits when they decommitt, but congratulate coaches who leave after telling recruits they were staying. (Not totally alike, but I see what he's saying)

I always yelled at the tv and said I hated the guy but I never meant it. He was a very good coach but now I'm not scared of seeing Wisconsin on the schedule anymore.

Kind of strange that Wisconsin basketball and football used to be so bad. I grew up with them having one of the most stable athletic departments in the big ten in the mid 2000s. I only remember winning once in Madison in either sport and that is with Stauskas.

What that AD did was amazing.  When I was at Michigan, Wisconsin was at the bottom of everything.  Playing them was a de-facto bye week.

They did it smart.  They recognized their strenghts and weaknesses and leveraged that.  They were never trendy or cool in Football or Basketball as they evolved, and watching them could make your eyesz bleed, but they stuck to what worked for them . . . ball control, sound fundamentals, slowing down the game.

They found a successful niche that they can sustain.

His team's style of play was annoying, and I hated playing them, but I always thought he was a pretty good guy.  What a run he had - never missed the tournament, never finished out of the top four in the conference.  A shame he fell just short of winning it all.

Probably no one and no team in the Big Ten I hated playing more than them. Their slow, lumbering style of game pissed me off, and it seemed like they'd always find a way to weasel their way into beating us on some miracle shot or buzzer beater bullshit. It was like they had our number every single year.

Will not miss playing him, but I have to give Ryan his due credit. Man that guy knows how to coach some basketball.

with respect to his top assistant is plausible. It is always tricky with recruits during a transition.

The other thing that occurred to me is that it is difficult to perform any job as a lame duck, though some can do it fairly well. I have often wondered if that was an issue for Lloyd in 2007, since it appears he knew that was his last season going in even if it was not publicly disclosed.

Pending this being for health reasons I think this is a pretty shitty move. It's not his job to pick the next coach, it's to coach this team. I understand all the outside circumstances leading up to this, but if his heart wasn't in this from the start of the year it really wasn't fair to the players or anyone else associated with the team for that matter.

Hopefully the players at least weren't kept in the dark about the impending change.

But if Barry Alvarez has even the slightest amount of DB-type bull shit in him, it might be that Bo Ryan is trying to steer the Wisconsin bball program in a safe direction, out of fear that Alvarez could jeopardize it.
