Bo Ryan Retirement - Presser

Submitted by MGoBender on

This is worth its own thread, I think.  Bo Ryan's presser from last night - it's worth 10 minutes of your time.

In it, he describes what many in the other thread have speculated at: He anticipated retiring after last season, but because of his assistant's dad's cancer, he put it off.  Ryan and Alvarez decided that thend of the semester would be an apporpriate time to make the change, so this isn't out of nowhere - they just kept a lid on it.

I think we all had our moments of hate with Bo Ryan - I myself tossed a few unsurly words his way as a Maize Rager - but that was a hate born out of respect more than any other fan hate I can think of.  We hated that he took a bunch of "less talented" players and made them a better team.  And, well, he did look like an alien.

Kudos to a great career - your replacement won't be nearly as fun to hate.

he's upset his defense can't mug cutters anymore.

He's also sad his offense can't hold the ball for over 30 seconds anymore.

Seriously though, great coach and a great career. I just hate his style of basketball.

It was the style....almost like a mugging whenever you went on the court with his Wisconsinners.  At least it kept the football season somewhat alive through March.

I hate Wisconsin basketball, because, well...you know, but Ryan was obviously a terrific coach who produced considerable success and I wish him well.

about him saying, "if my team was playing better, I still would have walked away". Was that part of the presser....? It probably isn't easy to walk away from a team that is not performing well the first part of the season. /S

Planned or not, if this team was better, no way he walks away right now. I have a ton of respect for Bo Ryan, it's just insulting to everyone's intelligence to imply that he was going to retire "at this moment" no matter how the team was doing. Now, before anyone says that this was never implied, it was. By saying that he and Alvarez already came to this conclusion, it is implied that if the team was playing well, he would still be retiring....

I have spoken with someone fairly close to the situation who told me this morning that Barry was not in on this plan. My guy said that Barry is not on-board with Gard and that this was Bo's way of ensuring that Gard had an opportunity to try-out for the position with a half season as interim coach. He pointed to the cold exchange between Barry and Bo at the end of the presser as being representative of how things are between those two right now.

I am sure the rules changes are a big thing with Bo Ryan, but I really thought it would impact MSU and Izzo more with the same type of style they play, yet they are undefeated.  Hopefully, someone knocks off whiny pants and ugly Valentine.
