Bo: "Rich Rod is my 2nd favorite coach in CFB" Where to find that quote

Submitted by beardog07 on

I might have been hallucinating, but I swear that somewhere on the internets this quote was mentioned.  I've searched high and low.  Anyone know where it can be found?  Was it a hallucination?

Oh, hey man, did you know that Bo said RichRod was Bo's 2nd favorite coach in all football?

Oh, wow man, Really man?

Oh yeah, man!

No shit?

No, man.

When did Bo say that?

I don't know, man.

Oh, wow man. Far out man, neither do I.

Maybe it'd shed some light on  why the cupboard was so bare for RichRod, and why the falling out actually happened with Miles.    Information like that is DEVASTATING for recruiting....kids aren't gonna go somewhere for four years when they think the coach had Parkinsons, true or not.

I heard that one and then Michigan lost 5 star lineman Joseph Barksdale of Detroit to LSU as well. They promised him he could stay at DT, which Michigan wouldn't, and then moved him to the O line as soon as the ink dried.

The Carr/Miles rift is said to be based on two separate issues, one from the early '90s when Les was an assistant here under Moeller (which led Les to leave the program) and then the Jai Eugene/Parkinson's stuff later.   The first incident isn't clear, but it earned Les the nickname "Loose Morals" around here.

(The wildest rumor is that he slept with Moeller's wife, prompting Moeller to have the drunken breakdown which cost his job.  That seems a little farfetched, but Les did leave the program right around then.)

Don Nehlen (and a few other people close to Bo) have spoken about how Bo admired RichRod's offense. As far as I know, there are no quotes from the himself on the matter, but I'm inclined to believe that he was a fan of the spread option because, well, who wouldn't be? For a coach like Bo, who loved running the option and always favored a great ground attack, it was probably like a dream come true. Now, I'm not sure he ever said he was second favorite coach in college football. Assuming Lloyd topped the list, Les Miles was probably second and Jim Harbaugh third. In fact there are a lot of guys who played for Bo in the coaching ranks like Doug and Mike Mallory, for example.

That is a classic program cover.  I really love the old pics and collectables.  However, I have already chosen one of Bo and Glenn Doughty from 1969.

If this one turns up having already been taken, I will go to your program cover.  Thanks for the suggestion!

an argument with a guy at BW's one afternoon when he tried to tell me that BO didn't run the option, that the wishbone offence wasn't an option offence, and that rick leach was a passing QB... but he claimed to be a HUGE michigan fan... but i should have know better when he told me that he lived on the mlive message boards...

on his Sunday morning WTKA radio show.  It was during the search, when Kirk Ferentz was the hot rumor--so RR wasn't under consideration at all yet.  Bacon said that Bo told him he thought the two best coaches in college football were Kirk Ferentz and Rich Rodriguez.

Whether he actually said this or not I think Bo was honest and objective enough to recognize great coaching wherever it was.  Also think he would see a lot of himself in Rich Rodriguez.  And, he more than anyone would know that you do not have to come out of the Michigan program or be a prior "Michigan Man" to "get it" and be a successful coach here.

Rick Leach sees the same things, and knows this offense would fit him...part of the reason he has been so supportive of RR.

In the years prior to RR's hire, including the time when Bo was still alive, RR was generally considered one of the best coaches in the game - Alabama certainly recognized that.  Too bad Bo was not alive when we hired RR - a lot of the nonsense would have been cut off before it got started.

Anybody who paid attention to college football during the Pat White era at WVU had to have liked what they saw.  I remember watching some Thursday night games in which they were contestants and thinking "Damn!  This is a good team."  I mean, it really was amazing how, with the slightest opening in the line Pat White was gone.  It was by far some of the most interesting college football that was being played anywhere.  I was ecstatic when I heard the news of the surprise hiring of Coach Rod, just as many people I knew were dismayed.  However, we are just now beginning to see what his teams can do.  I'm about the 1,000,000th to say it, but Denard's play last week reminded me a lot of what Pat White was doing at WVU a few years ago.  We have a lot to look forward to with this team, and a lot of big wins are going to come our way.  We may not be out of the woods yet, but 2010 is going to make the last 2 years seem like a distant memory.  Bo was no dummy.  Unlike many reactionary UM fans who don't like "spread offenses" (most likely because that is not what we played in our glory years), Bo could see the potential that Rod's offense had to really put some points on the board, and as a result win a lot of games.  That is particularly important this year, as our D is going to give up a ton of points most likely.  Once we get that issue handled more satisfactorily, there is really no limit to what we can do.

When asked about what coaching styles he liked. Because, well, duh, it was a running offense.

More concretely, Barry Switzer said it was the offense he'd be running if he was still coaching.

"They've got a playbook that works," Switzer told The Associated Press in a recent telephone interview from Norman, Okla. "I've loved their offense. When I saw them run it the first time, I loved it. I said this is similar to something I would do if I was college coaching again." "They're more deceptive than the wishbone. The wishbone was an east-west offense," Switzer said. "This offense he runs is more deceptive because you run counters, you run options off the counters. It's just totally lined up to be able to go misdirection."

If this was a quote from BO then it is awesome to see RR in the position he's in.  RR will bring consistent success to this university, and by the end of this season it will be realized.
