Bo Pelini Vote

Submitted by Ziff72 on

I hadn't thought of him until I listened to Brian's podcast, but he's my #1 choice right now by a land slide.

With all the returning starters I think we can still win the Big Ten next year.

1. Defense-With all the returning players he can make a big,  instant impact on the defense and with his rep and Michigan's name he could lock down some big name d recruits down the stretch and bring a few from his class to jump start our recruiting Mojo.

2. Offense- Don't think he is married to any one style but he ran as close an offense to ours as anyone last year.

3. Style-Similar emotional style to RR might help in player retention.

4. Dick Factor- He'll take the Freep and skull fuck them.

but a NE friend of mine said the kid's dad was constantly interfering; even texting during game when he went to locker room to get an injury looked at.  i didn't actually see the tirade, but in general, i think it's a good thing for a coach not to have favoritism to any player.

that said, though, i much prefer a coach to rip a kid behind the scenes (or in front of the team) if necessary; not in public.

i think it would be an outstanding hire but i question the likelihood.

My co-worker, next cubicle over, is a Nebraska alum.  Told me the same story about Martinez hanging back in the locker room to text, while the game was ongoing, after having an injury looked at.  He said that Bo and the kid's dad got in to an argument, and the dad threatened to have his son transfer.

I am now learning that Pelini is both from Ohio, and went to OSU, was Miles DC too.   He is a GREAT candidate... but there is no way Harbaugh turns his back on his great mother in her most dire time of need.

Enough already.  The offense is good.  The Dline is good. You have no idea how the LB's and Db's will look next year.

Tell that to MSU last year.  You got blown out by  Wisconsin and lost to Minnesota, CMU and gave up a bazillion points to Texas Tech in your bowl game don't even think of a Big 10 championship....oh wait what ?

Pelini's ties to tOSU is a huge selling point in my opinion.  He would immediately have an understanding of the rivalry and the importance of The Game, and would likely understand the importance of tradition and the M's history.  I'm not sure why he would want to leave Nebraska, but he certainly seems like a viable candidate to look into.

I think it seems weird to hire away another Big 10 coach.  Other than that, he has a major temper and could probably use some therapy. He's the only coach I've seen get a penalty for yelling at the refs.

I don't see an Ohio State alum leaving the other premiere job in our own division where he is presumably pretty well thought of and well paid so that he can take the Michigan job.

And Miami to Michigan makes sense.  Moeller (perhaps the OSU alum you were thinking of) taking the job after years as a Michigan assistant makes sense.  Leaving a top-15 program in the same division to take over your alma mater's archrival doesn't really make any sense.

And beyond his interest level, why would we want Pelini?  If we want a crazy person, Les Miles has a better record and a hat that doesn't look like he found it in the bargain bin at some gas station.

So, he's not a candidate for this job because you don't think he might have the slightest bit of interest in coaching here?

We want him because as a DC he has gone to 3 separate NCGs and won 2 of them. Everywhere he goes, the defense improves dramatically. He runs the spread, so he's less likely to scrap our offense again. He played at OSU so he would fully understand the rivalry. If he improves our defense in the slightest way and teaches our offense to hold onto the ball, we will be competing for the B1G championship next year.

I just don't see it happening, don't think he's on Brandon's radar, and I'm not personally that high on him as a head coach because of his demeanor and lack of high level success as a HC.  If he or his brother want to come run the defense I'm cool with that, but I think there are a number of better head coaching candidates out there who are also more realistic options.

Stealing Nebraska's (an in division Rival, no less) coach would be awesome. He'd shape up the defense, Denard would stay, and we'd have hopefully less attrition on offense. Moreover, it is a huge plus that he played at OSU. I think he's a big #1 candidate if this report is true. I am a little nervous I didn't see this report anywhere else though.

The fact is that Michigan and Nebraska are basically equivalent in terms of history and tradition, and Nebraska is in much better shape at the moment.  Unless there was some VERY compelling reason (eg, Michigan is a major step up, which it is not), then no - I don't think he'd be all that interested.

Les Miles won his national championship wit Bo Pelini as DC, just saying....

As an aside, I don't think Les Miles is as awful as everyone makes him out to be.  There have been plenty of coaches that have done far worse than Miles in similarly plum situations.  If he had had an actual living, breathing quarterback the last three years, he may have tacked on a second national title.  His ethics are questionable, and if that's the reason not to hire him, I'm fine with that.

10-2 this year with all his own recruits and no Pelini.  As you said, swap a competent QB for what he's got and they win a national title this year.  Give him Denard and they might have a wild card game scheduled this weekend.

I am ready and willing to embrace a Miles hire if it happens.

I guess I'm willing to give the guy a pass considering this is pretty much the nature of the beast for every school down there and he wouldn't have any chance to do it here at Michigan.

Also, Miles definitely isn't my top choice.  Just a guy I think is at least somewhat likely/plausible who I wouldn't be upset to see hired at this point.  If the choice is shady SEC recruiting tactics in the guy's past (while he was in the SEC) or a losing record as a head coach (Hoke), I'll take the crazy grass-eating SOB every day of the week.

I was referring to Schembechler being an assistant at OSU.  I'm not saying that I want Pelini, or that he would ever even think about coming.  I'm just saying that when it comes to coaches, their alma mater isn't always the most important aspect of their resume.  They're looking for jobs and advancement in the industry like anyone else at any other job.

this would be just another reason to hate on Nebraska.  I never did like them and still don't.

If he is interested, so am I bring him in and let him loose.   For his OC, there are few unemployed guys out there, who have run both the spread and prostyle offences successfully....
