Bo-nniversary

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

He's been gone 10 years......he was before my time, but as much old game tape as I've seen and having read his book multiple times, I can't help but wince when November 17th comes around every year. I can't believe it's been 10 years. I remember where I was when I heard. Being dropped off from 5th grade at home. Didn't truly understand what we lost that day, but I figured it out pretty quickly seeing the mourning that took place all over the country. His impact and legacy is still felt at Michigan. Only man in Ann Arbor with a statue. There will never be another Bo Schembechler.

If Harbaugh remains at Michigan until he retires, there may be another statue on campus as well as several championships.

"Rest assured, no female member of my family would be inside a men's locker room regardless of their job description."

-Bo, excusing Jack Morris being a sexist d-bag to a female Free Press reporter (Jennifer Frey) working the Tigers locker room.

Everything and everyone has shades of gray, doesn't make people completely evil or completely saintly, but scrubbing away facts is never a good look.

Scrubbing away History. Easy to look back through 2016 glasses. In those years, there was incredible resistance to allowing female reporters in the locker room. From all sports and all people.

Again, if you actually READ about him, he changed his ways later on in life.

Only fools hold it against how people were raised. He was the son of a confederate soldier.

But we apply 2016 standards to things from over 100 years ago and expect everything to fall in line.

Changing his ways doesn't change the fact that he refused to let black athletes on his teams. Or that he hated Irish Catholics almost as much as he hated blacks.

It's good that he changed his ways, and acted like decent human being, but that doesn't excuse his prior actions.

You've built this cult of personality around men you've never met, and are excusing sexist/racist behaviour on their ends under the guise of "well shucks, that's just how it happened back then".

It's not about applying 2016 standards to win an internet argument. It's about applying common human decency standards, and being able to admit that everybody, even good football coaches, have their flaws

Guess what? I'm Catholic and Slavic. His kind didn't/don't like me very much, either.

I forgive Yost. Why? Because that's how he was raised and I don't hold that against him.

And it's not because he built Michigan Athletics, either.

The definition of misogyny (one of the 2016 American social media buzzwords) is a prejudice or hate for women.

If you actually read his book and the stories about how viewed women's athletics and the first female Michigan Daily reporter who was on the field and in the locker room, you wouldn't throw around said-buzzword that so many do at the drop of a nickel today on the internet.

Posting that crap in a memorial thread when it really has no basis other than one quote where he really said nothing wrong at all is not a good look. But that's how a lot of people are in 2016. They take today's warped view and apply it to a time where people weren't looking for something to be offended by with every breath.

Well let's be realistic here. I don't know how many of our bloggers have been a part of real sports teams. But I probably wouldn't want any of my female family members inside a men's locker room either...

He's been banned 10 years......he was before my time, but as much WH style highlight videos as I've seen and having read his super guide multiple times, I can't help but wince when November 17th comes around every year. I can't believe it's been 10 years. I remember where I was when I heard. Being dropped off from 5th grade at home. Didn't truly understand what we lost that day, but I figured it out pretty quickly seeing the mourning that took place all over the internet. His impact and legacy is still felt at mgoblog. There will never be another WD.

I'm sure they said the same thing about Bear Bryant. And then came Nick Saban. There's bound to be another that will deserve a statue at Michigan as well. There's no shortage of larger than life people that have passed through Ann Arbor.

The timing of it all was so surreal... Michigan and Ohio State was basically a cliff notes version of Bo's coaching career & impact. For it to happen just days before "The Game" Of "The Century", both undefeated, #1 vs #2 & at the center of the college football world... In a sort of bittersweet way, it was almost perfect. The way it always was. The way it always should be.

In Bo's Lasting Lessons, Bacon asked him to write a "if I had one more week" brief chapter. Bo described how there were a lot of great options, but his ultimate choice would be a week of game prep against a Woody Hayes-led Ohio State team. He said he didn't even need the game - just the week of practice to figure out how to beat a mind he respected and put his men in position to succeed.

I think of that description by Bo almost as "calling his shot" regarding the timing of his death. Pretty amazing that he died (at the end of a prep week for The Game) just as he said he would want to live.

That was the first year I found mgoblog, it was in a different format but I lurked through 2008 then joined in '09. Bo was coach and Harbaugh was the QB when I attended Michigan. It kind of dampened the excitement of the big '06 game, both teams came in undefeated and it was an exciting game. Everyone thought it was going to be a low scoring defensive slugfest. But it seem like our defense diminished through the year as OSU scored a lot of points and in the Rose Bowl USC just blew us out in the 2nd half. Hopefully things will be different this season, I  hope!

Bo's first 23 games at Michigan - 19-4.

Harbaugh's first 23 games at Michigan - 19-4.

Bo wound up 28-4 before losing his 5th game. Come on, Jim, and keep following in those footsteps!!

In reality, this is setting up to be one hell of a grudge match at OSU next weekend. Lets hope we can deliver some decade's worth of payback.

RIP Bo.

I don't think we can deliver a decade's worth of payback in one game.  By my lights, they're not fully paid back until OSU suffers about seventy-seven decades' worth of payback from Michigan.

Old Testament justice.  Lamech-style, Buckeyes.  Lamech-style.

(And I'm not even religious!)

It's been a while since I took my 'History of Ann Arbor' class, but Henry Tappan definitely has a statue on campus. Although, I've never taken my pic next to the Tappan statue, and I take a picture next to the Bo statue every single time...

Hard to believe. I was driving through Northern Georgia with my family when I heard about Bo's passing, on my way to my brother-in-law's wedding the next day. Pulled off the next exit and had my wife take over the wheel for the last few hours of the drive, I was so shook by the news. In a side note, thanks for the reminder, I'll pick up and send them a 10-year Wedding Anniversary card tomorrow.
