Bo and Woody

Don't know if this has been posted before, but it gave me chills to watch these two talk and to hear what this rivalry really stands for, from the people who made it what it is.

Apparently I suck at embedding, so I'll switch to link

I remember back in the 70's during the 10 Year War and how big those games were each November.  Bo and Woody brought the rivalry to an even higher level that still exists today.  Hopefully, this will be the year we start making them pay for all the Tressel-tainted victories.

Seriously?  Our friends from church just had their son's Toy Story birthday party a while back.  While opening his presents he exclaimed "I got the Big Woody" and we all had a good laugh.

Edit:  Sorry, I guess my mind's in the gutter.  I jumped from your comment to my comment without realizing you were talking about Woody Hayes.  Man, this heat is getting to me.

" People that think those games were boring because they weren't high scoring just dont know football"

"If you came out there and played all loose trying to score 40 you were going to get killed"

The strategic nature of those games is so underappreciated IMO. When 2 teams that are so fundamentally strong and talented athletically go head to head a coach cannot only look at the "upside" of his decision(throw a 50 yd bomb, run a reverse, fake punt etc.) he has to be just as concerned with the downside of where you put yourself if it doesnt work because the other team is just not going to give you much opportunity to get that back.

This was probably due to a combination of the rules at the time, scholarships, fewer viable teams in college football and a much more limited talent pool but regardless its still the same to a degree. A riverboat gambler will win you some games that you might not have, and will have some seasons where it all goes right but for sustained excellence over the long haul fundamentally sound football will still win out. Blocking, Tackling, protecting the football and avoiding penalties are more important than who's taking the snaps in a given year or how many trick plays you can jam into your playbook to try and "fool" the other team rather than just plain beat them.

I always loved the story about Bo, when he was coaching the O-line for Woody and got his ass reamed because they had numerous procedure penalties in a particular opening game. Bo said for the rest of the season they went on 2. Great thing was, the other team knew they were going on 2 and still couldnt stop them. That signifies a great football team, not just a bunch of guys running around relying on one especially talented player or two to make it all happen.

IMO, the two greatest coaches and icons of college football.

I think their funniest quotes were from right after the 1969 game:

When Bo was asked about Woody: "I played for Woody, I coached for him, I patterned my life after him, and I consider him a great friend of mine"

When Woody was asked about Bo: "I didn't like the son of a bitch when he played for me, I didn't like him when he worked for me, and I certainly don't like him now"

I prefer this way so when the natural balance restores itself and the Big Ten is once again OSU and UM on top, we'll play them twice in a row most years. That would be amazing.

And throw in a couple years like 2006, so we have a chance to play them three times in a row? That'd be the definition of epic.

How dare you speak so disrespectfully toward the division where our last coach built his reputation. You make it sound almost as if lack of support might not have been the only reason he failed at Michigan.

Sorry, it Friday. I'm going on vacation for a week, and when I think of football season being a mere few weeks away I just get all giddy thinking about not having to watch RR & Gerg trot out the same fundamentally poor (albiet explosive & exciting) team this year. I so look forward to some sound tackling, sustained drives, occasional FG's and above all DEFENSE!!

video pop up as the next selection made it all perfect.

I miss that man!   When you think about it, there could be no time more perfect for Brady Hoke to take over Michigan than right now.  I have no idea what will happen this season, but I have a feeling that it will be something special and we get to see the beginning of a magical run with this staff at the helm.

I can't wait for Sept.

I wonder if MDen still has any copies, or if it's part of that Bo DVD. You can still get the VHS for like $12 on Amazon. Though I think mgovideo.com downloaded the whole thing for viewing. If you want to see the cheesy, but awesome, intro-

This video is seriously great. You just don't see coaches sit down and have these types of conversations anymore. Coaches like Tressel and Saban will cheat whomever in order to achieve a sliver of accomplishment....Here's to hoping Hoke has a lil Bo in him
