Block M added to front bumper of Winged Helmets

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

I saw this a few weeks ago at Schembechler. It was a display for the history of the helmets at Michigan.

For the current one, I thought it was interesting seeing what looked like a small Blue foam(?) M stuck to the front bumper on the helmet in the case that talked about the current design.

I thought it was just something for display. Well, it looks like that's a real thing now based off of a photo Canteen tweeted.

Interesting. I don't really know what to think of it.

The front bumper looked like this since 9/25/1985

According to M Victors, the manufacturer's logo was replaced with "Michigan" on the helmet back in 1985.

The block M first was added to the football pants in 1993.  It was increased in size the following year.

The block M also made it way onto the jersey sleeves in the 1960s and the late 1990s and early 2000s.  Last season, it made its way on the back of the jersey righrt above the player's name and number.

See http://mvictors.com/?page_id=63647 for the M Victors uniform timeline that illustrates other changes to the shoes, socks, pants, jerseys and helmet.  You'd probably be surprised about the number of actual changes made.

picture in the first post shows the Michigan not centered and it looks like it was printed on a label maker. Sell the block M it's Michigan's identity so I like it.
