Damn, I was hoping the Lions could get him. But that is what happens when you wait an extra week to fire a coach in a cut throat business like the NFL.
This isn't a case of waiting being the cause. The Ford family doesn't want to spend $22 million plus on a coach. $12 million to Swartz, $6.8 million to buyout O'Brien, and then $6-8 million to actually sign O'Brien to contract.
We don't know how much the Texans are going to pay O'Brien. But the point was that the Lions were only able to reach out to him and not be serious contenders for his services. The Lions are considered to be THE job this offseason and have essentially wasted a week of the coaching search by keeping Schwartz.
Lions are not firing Schwartz
We can call Metro Cars to pick him up from Ford Field at halftime tomorrow.
Lions job is THE job...? never heard this before.... ever.
Well they have never had a franchise QB, best WR in the game, good-great D-Line, good O-Line/LB corps, and other solid pieces before. Many people believe with a legit coach (Arians, Tomlin, Belicheck) they could win 11-12 games without changing the roster.
No one good is going to the Lions if another team has an opening available. Perhaps even if no openings are available. Perhaps Brian Kelly.
As much as I would enjoy Kelly for the conniptions it would cause my ND friend, ugh, isn't there anyone else?
Lane Kiffin would be a typical Lions hire
Why would you want to be coach of the Lions when you can be ON MNF and have a show on ESPN with quarterback prospects.
I hope Brian leaves ND because they will suck even more.
Off topic, but I wonder if Texas has reached out to Dantonio or at least plans to after the bowl game. I also wonder if Texas has contacted O'Brien.
Texas is waiting to take a run at either one of the coaches in the title game or an NFL coach. If they miss on those they will probably go after a Mike Gundy or James Franklin type. Not Dantonio. The Texas job requires someone with an engaging personality which is something that Dantonio does not have. And he lost 6 games last year.
Reggie Bush on offense? I think quite a few good coaches would want to coach the Lions. The question is can the Lions find one of them.
I don't feel it should be that way though. With just the talent on their roster they are a ready-made playoff team. Two good rbs, best receiver in football, top-8 qb(talent wise), one of the best d-lines in the game, and an improving o-line. There are WAY worse situations out there.
with ownership that is notoriously slow to make changes in the coaching staff.
The Lions are one of the top coaching jobs that is likely to be available.
I'm not sure if I e ever heard of the Lions being a top coaching job. Times must be-a-changing in the D
is hardly ever the reality. I have heard plenty of coaches who have said that Detroit is a great job because the ownership is loyal and stays out of your way. Add to that the talent on this currnt team and this becomes the best job available this offseason. The problem is Schwartz's buyout, 12m plus buying out another contract plus whatever you pay the guy you hire is just asking a bit much. I think were stuck for 1 more year.
I feel bad for Christian Hackenberg and other players who committed to uncertainty at the school but With belief BOB would help them develop etc.
Always the money.
Hasn't everyone known that O'Brien would not be there for the long haul? His NFL pedigree and ambitions were common knowledge since he took the job, and he was being offered NFL jobs last year before Hackenberg ever signed his LOI.
This should not be a surprise to anyone, and PSU should be eminently grateful for the time they got that he stopped the school from cratering the last two years when many other mediocre coaches wouldn't have been able to.
No one can ever dare take a job for more money? Except in every other field besides sports.
Yes it's not like the NFL is the highest level of coaching.
Ummm...I thinks it's called the "pros" for a reason. Meaning, it's better than the amateurs (I.e., college).
Dantonio to Penn State?
Schiano will get canned in Tampa. He's college material. especially with success at Rutgers
Penn State would hire Munchak before Schiano.
Dantonio is too grouchy to coach in Happy Valley.
+ 1 Insightful.
Always believed BOB was an NFL guy at heart. The PSU stint was a nice boost to his rep but he wants the NFL.
Per NBC, he has reportedly continued to insist that he is sticking around, at least to Penn State players (LINK) and personnel. That being said, his interest in an NFL position has not exactly been a secret and I have to believe that there are a couple NFL owners that would write PSU a check for the buyout and even say "Thanks" to the Nittany Lions.
It'll be interesting to see if O'Brien can buck the trend of Belichick assistants not working out as NFL head coaches (Mangini, Crennel, McDaniels).
Belichick's coaching tree is interesting though - Saban, Dantonio, Schwartz and of course the immortal Charlie Weis, among others. Spam filter won't let me post the link for some reason but it's really fascinating, google it.
O'Brien to Texas, Schiano to PSU ......
Narduzzi to Bucs?!
if BOB leaves. When Schiano backed out on Bill Martin in 2007, rumor was that he still wanted to be the guy who could replace JoePa and thought the PSU job would open sooner. He's proven he can't coach the kinds of players in the NFL. These guys don't put up with Saban's style or Schiano's either. Lou Holtz ran into the same issue even back in the 1970s. Bobby Petrino, Steve Spurrier, etc.
Some college coaches have been very successful in the pros. Tom Coughlin (2 super bowl wins, this year not so much), Jim Harbough, Pete Carroll (this time around) and Chip Kelly.
After Tampa Bay, Schiano is damaged goods.
Will fuck this up and end up keeping Swartz
No way they keep Swartz or did you mean Schwartz?
And it is as big as mine.
gets hired, I see FIFTH and FOREVER from John U Bacon hitting stores soon...
Ha! How do you figure that?
He has all but resurrected a program on its death bed. PSU was competitive in every game outside of the OSU game. He stays, they'll never fire him. He leaves and he's on the clock to be fired.
I can't blame BOB if he leaves. Penn State fans had to have seen this coming if he does, but I hope he does stay. The Big Ten needs as many top coaches as it can get. But if BOB does leave, hopefully they can swipe up Golden.
Wouldn't be a bad trade off at all.
Texans is a better place for a coach to go in and impose his will. Texans still have a decent roster and through the bad breaks and timing of a horrible season will probably have a top 3 pick.
Lions have a decent roster too but with less degree of control and will be inheriting a QB who doesn't feel anything's wrong with him.
For PSU. They are going to need a big time recruiting coach with their sanctions
