Lets start the list of potential replacements at Penn State. I'll lead off by throwing David Cutcliffe out there.

I know that is the rumor

I know that is the rumor going around, but that would not be good for PSU if even half of the things the have been written about him and his attitude in the past two years are true. I don't know him personally, but he sounds like a control freak, "in your face" type of coach, which isn't what PSU needs when the university is still trying to rebuild good will with the national public.

Plus, I know it's Rutgers and all, but he wasn't even that great of a coach there. He never won a Big East championship, his only double digit win season came 6 years before he bailed to coach Tampa Bay, and the year before he left Rutgers, they went 4-8.

you can't just say "yeah, I

you can't just say "yeah, I know it's Rutgers" and then ignore all the context

a double digit win season there was borderline farcical before it actually happened. Even a 4-8 season there would've been considered a success.

Upvoted you, but I'll clarify. I wasn't ignoring that accomplishment as much as I acknowledged it and dismissed the level of its importance. Yeah, an 11 win season at Rutgers is something of an accomplishment. It's nice, but there is that popular phrase around here that even a blind squirrel finds a nut. Where did he take the program since then? Nowhere, really. They hovered around the top of the middle third of the Big East for a few more years, never finished a season ranked since, and ultimately showed no signs of progression before he lucked into a pro job in Tampa, where he has spent the last two years making a complete ass out of himself to other players and coaches and has brought an attitude that had turned nearly his entire team against him during training camp of this year

A cursory look at BSD shows

A cursory look at BSD shows that at least a faction of the Penn State fanbase absolutely hates the idea of Schiano as their HC.

The PR issues do matter. He's got an identity as a program builder, but now has a rap as a bad guy for a locker room. That's not what PSU needs now.

Besides, he's a default from the last search. I don't know he's the default this time for PSU's admin.

There's another aspect from the PR angle as well.  He was at Penn State's defensive staff from 1990-95 with Jerry Sandusky. In the past, he's wisely chosen a somewhat elaborate "no comment" when asked, "You worked for six years under Jerry Sandusky. Did you have any inkling of what was going on?"

Bringing Shiano in as HC would re-open that whole line of questioning and would be a PR nightmare to deal with.

Carroll, Saban and Spurrier

Saban had won a NC at LSU before he went to the pros.  Spurrier had won a NC at Florida and made Florida a perennial Top 10 program before he went to the pros.

Carrol had way more success in the pros then Schiano did.  Carroll was head coach of the Jets in '94 and went 6-10.  He spent the next couple of years as the DC in San Fran.  He was head coach of the patriots for 3 years.  In those 3 years the partriots went :  10-6 won the AFC east, 9-7 wildcard, 8-8.  He did take over the Patriots after Parcells had guided them to a Super Bowl.

Yeah

You are probably right, I would not hire him, everything I've read suggests he's kind of a jerk. He did have pretty good success at Rutgers. That being said, I think PSU will consider the following:

1. Al Golden

2. James Franklin

3. Mike Munchak

4 Greg Roman

5. Dan Mullen

I think any of these would be HR hires for penn state, all would be great for B1G too.

Golden

That would be crazy considering the two more years of bowl ineligibility. It would mean that Golden would have only coached 2 bowl games in his first 10 seasons of coaching.

Did I miss the "/s" on this

Did I miss the "/s" on this one?

BOB took over arguably one of - if not the - worst situation in the history of a major college football program. Moreover, his professional aspirations - whether formally or informally communicated - were always directed toward the pros. As far as I am concerned, the guy is an incredible coach, did wonders for PSU when they needed some salvation, and is realizing his professional dream (coach in the NFL).

Kids commit to both...a

Kids commit to both...a school and a coaching staff. One has a slightly longer and more stable track record than the other.

Whether we like it or not, it's the nature of the beast. These programs and the athletes involved in them are not static objects. We cannot assume that simply because they were here one season, they will be here the next. That's not how any businesses or organizations works, and it's not how college football works. It's not "purer" than any other institution when it comes to persons' personal and / or professional aspirations.

yes they commit to both but there are those who commit purely because of a coach. Players are trying to get to the NFL (the top players are) and a coach has more to do with that than the actual school.

Do they have anyone coming in

Do they have anyone coming in that OSU would even want?  Last time I looked at BSD, they were going wild because they'd had a 2* commit.   That being said, I don't follow recruiting, so I have no idea what the state of our class is, or whether Urban would snake oil Penn State.

Croots

If the Glenville dou commits, we will have one more player than we have room for of the 85 scholarship players. From then on, every additional player will require someone else to transfer or attrition. Other players OSU has interest in includes: Tony Brown, Solomon Thomas, and Malik McDowell. The only players OSU would have interest in from PSU are Gesick or Holley since these players were 50/50 before between us and PSU. Urban wants one more OL too but I doubt we get one.

Heck try and get him even if McDowell comes here too. Michigan needs line depth and Hand isn't coming, so I'll take another DL. McDowell and Holley could play the 2 inside line positions.

I agree. Plus Narduzzi with his new pay raise still doesn't make over 600,000 I believe. PSU could lock him up for 2 or 3 million a year for the next 4 or 5 years. I bet Narduzzi would do it.

Bill O’Brien had no HC experienced either.

He also has deep Midwestern roots. He can recruit Ohio well. He coaches the type of football PSU wants.(MANBALL!!)

PSU needs a guy who will be there awhile. There is no such guarantees with a Franklin. PSU would be a destination spot for Narduzzi.

Maybe he is talking about the board, alumni, and boosters who created the environment that made what happened possible. While I feel bad for the players, they had a chance to look elsewhere. Unfortunately it is hard to punish one group with out some collateral damage.

Don't blame them for beating UM when UM blew the game.  What are they supposed to do, give the win to UM?  It's in UM's best interest for PSU to be good, for our games to be televised, to have a rivalry like we had in the early and mid 2000's, etc.  Don't blame PSU for UM's deficiencies.

I don't blame BOB for leaving at all. Everyone knew eventually he wanted to be an NFL head coach. He took a job in a shitty spot, where the only thing expected was failure and succeeded two straight years. He's set them up better than anyone could expect, and got the opportunity he was looking for and took it.

This really sucks for PSU

This really sucks for PSU fans and college football fans.  I thought he did a tremdous job under the circumstances and he was exactly what PSU needed - a calming, respectable face for the program.  He came across as genuine which is rare among coaches.  I have no doubt he would have absoluetely gotten PSU back to Top 25 caliber teams year in year out.  I know he was a NFL guy, but I think he passed up an opportunity to be something special to that university/community.  My two pennies...

I'm pretty sure it's well documented that Bo was an acolyte of Woody Hayes. Yeah I have no problem taking anybody from anywhere as long as that person is the best qualified person that can take Michigan back to the heights of college football.

Hoke may be that guy but a lot of damage has been done to that idea. Next year is huge.

That's like saying we shouldn't extend an offer to some guy with Ohio State credentials in 1969.

That being said, the likliehood that Par Narduzzi will ever be on the Michigan sidelines is zero.

Sounds like Penn State has a case of the Michigan Man. People were upset about BOB not keeping Paterno assistants. The more I read about it the more pissed off I get about people who care more worried about clinging to the past and what makes them feel all warm and fuzzy than the football team actually being good.

"Some of his frustrations

"Some of his frustrations revolved around what he saw as the lack of leadership at Penn State and his desire simply to fulfill his job description as the football coach, not university figurehead. I wrote about this a few days ago when I thought the time was apt.

Now you could argue that someone earning $3.6 million annually, more than three times the salary of anyone else at the school, has pretty much agreed to become a university spokesman in addition to simply a coach. But considering that the role of politician and glad-hander is one he abhors, O’Brien actually did a fairly decent job of that, too."

Sounds like the same thing Chip Kelly didn't like about coaching at Oregon.

I'm surprised at all the hate towards PSU on this board?? U want to prove ur better go out and beat them! Don't pray for their program to fall apart. What's the point of beating them if they suck? The best wins Michigan ever had against PSU were in 97 and 05. We need them to b good if u want those wins to matter. They'll

Hire Matt Millen who will then fill the PSU class by signing 6 WR's. George Campbell will then commit to PSU next year because Millen is the best WR talent evaluator in the world.

Hey maybe we can hire BoB

Hey maybe we can hire BoB after he flames out in the NFL.   I'm basing this on all the the others who have flamed out in the NFL and come back to coach college ball and have had some success.

Munchak then Franklin in that order

Munchak is an alum and has family in the area.

Frankln is a PA guy.  Born in PA, played in PA, and coached at multiple D2 schools in PA.  For many coaches with strong PA ties PSU is "the job" much like tOSU is for Ohio coaches.

Schiano has ties and can recruit NJ which is PSU's hotbed.  What I hear is the homers are neutral to mildly positive on him, not their top choice.

Golden is a stretch.  He's not really popular with the homers and the Miami bowl game took him out of top tier contention.  He makes no secret of his willingness to kiss the Paterno ring though so he'd fit the "Paterno Guy" requirement.

I wonder if Franklin is even

I wonder if Franklin is even interested in going to Penn State? With the recent news from O'Brien I do not know if he would want to leave Vanderbilt.
