Pretty lukewarm endorsement, when you consider his comment re not havig support of the Michigan family.  That is about as stiff of a rebuke as you are going to hear, even if it's couched as "support."

He also admitted RR never got full support: http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=5996783
"I'm not going to go back and second guess the decision," Martin told the AP. "We'll never know what would've happened if Rich got full support from the Michigan family."
Another telling quote comes from Brandstatter:
Since Schembechler arrived, radio announcer Jim Brandstatter has had an up-close look at Michigan football. He was disheartened that Rodriguez was fired Wednesday after three years filled with losing and turmoil in a marriage that might've been doomed from the start. "He had a lot of strikes against him when he walked in the door and that was sad," Brandstatter said. "The most important thing for me is this: The University of Michigan, its players -- current and former ones -- alums and fans need to be united behind whatever decision is made.

Athletic director Dave Brandon absolutely does not need to hire somebody who played or coached at Michigan. He needs somebody who gets Michigan — and more important, who wants to get it. He needs somebody who takes academics seriously and who understands the image the school wants to project. At Michigan, the coach is not supposed to worry about building a tradition. He is there to live up to one…It’s not about finding a coach who has spent a lot of time at the University of Michigan. It’s about finding a coach who should

WTF is "full support" I mean did this guy need a daily affirmation from everyone at Michigan??

Did they lock the weightroom doors and leave his guys standing in the rain for hours waiting for a "non supportive" custodian who loved Lloyd?

Media?? F the media, as a coach taking over a major program you better be able to ignore and diffuse all the crap being printed and focus on the ONE thing that is the ulitmate measure of your effectiveness...winning.

I'm just sick of all the "we didnt support him enough" comments, we PAID his ass, we let him pick his personell without interference, we let him have as much recruiting perdium as any coach in the country so what do you want?? Us to hold his hand after every miserable loss and sing a Groban song? Tell him its OK and we understand only having 10 men on the field on a 3rd and goal? or that 3rd and 9 is a perfectly acceptable football stragegy and its not at all the fault of his play calling? The only support he should need is from his staff and his players, from all reports those 2 groups are fiercely loyal to him. Why then did your team have more illegal procedure penalties than my local HS team had??(they had 3 in 10 games but they had mostly seniors, high school seniors but nonetheless seniors).

I was so ready to win that bowl, play some D and celebrate a milestone that showed he's got it!  That fundamentals are ASSUMED at the major div. 1 level regardless of what scheme or what players you have. They come first, before mastering the mesh and release portion of the zone read.

I hope he does great wherever he lands, but I'm not convinced it automatic. Hopefully he'll inherit a program with all seniors who've been running a zone read and already been taught to tackle, contain and all that trivial crap.

Responsibility for the last three years lies partly with Rodriguez.  Happy?

*

Don't be silly and suggest that the interminable brow beatings that he got from Michigan Men and the Free Press didn't matter.  To some, his firing was justified by the "toxic atmosphere."  (No big argument here on that, by the way ...)  What do you suppose contributed to that atmosphere?  Connect the dots, eh?

*

I'm not convinced that Rodriguez would have succeeded here, but he was dealt a mediocre hand of cards.  I haven't even mentioned the relatively bare cupboard that he inherited.  (Before anyone gets upset, that's not the same as saying "Lloyd left the cupboard bare," OK?)

Thank you and well said. There is no doubt that the media did him injustice from the start and for that I give the guy some slack. BUT..If he'd just been more conscious of the whole situation and taken a more measured approach(no Steven Threet/Nich Sheridan trying to run an offense that was a damn MESS) I think he could have really brought alot more momentum to the program.

I'm tired of the "Michigan Didn't Support Rich Rodriguez" talk too.  While I think there was some of that, it certainly didn't sabotage him and it's not like he did much to help himself.  I think a lot of people felt that he didn't respect the culture here but not honoring some traditions.  I also think he turned a lot of people off by the way he bailed on WV.  It was like, "If he can do that to his alma mater,  what loyalty will he have to us?"  And then he begged us to accept him.  I think it's the job of any incoming coach to assimilate into the culture in which they're arriving.  From mine and a lot of peoples opinions, he didn't seem to grasp some of the core tenants of being the HC at Michigan.  From the attitude that OSU is just another game we're trying to win to the #1 jersey and all that.  I think Michigan wanted to accept him but he made it hard with his perceived indifference to our values.  You don't come into somebody's house and put your feet up on the table.  This wasn't Michigan's fault, Rich Rod made his bead and now he's sleeping in it.

For the record, I supported him and wanted him to win the entire time he was here.  I thought that eventually we'd all get past some of the bumps on the road back to glory.  But I can't stand the way people are saying he never fit in here acting like it was Michigan's fault.  We all wanted him to win, we all cheered him when he did after the Notre Dame games etc.  Michael Rosenberg and the media aren't the face of the Michigan family.  They may have had it out for him but we didn't and he had many chances to succeed and didn't.  It's not like all the sudden the Big House was empty when he got there.  He had the power to respect the program and the history and it seemed it was too little too late by the time he figured it all out.

.....but why do people think that DB has turned this hire into a circus? He's doing the exact opposite of what BM and MSC didn't do...they blew up other coachs' spots before they participlated in a bowl so they were forced to reneg on saying they were interested in the job. DB is not rushing, he is playing everything close to the vest so that people don't get their biz laid out on the street for everyone to criticize. If anyone has turned this into a circus, it's the media....blame them for putting mics in people's faces including 18-22 year old kids on their way to class.

Most schools get rid of the coach in November or December so they can get a coach in there by time the recruiting dead period is over.  The goal is to come out of that time with your entire new staff in place so they can hit the ground running.  If we would have done that, this recruiting weekend would still be on and we might have been able to keep some current recruits (see. Dee Hart) playing in all star games this weekend.

DB played the gamble that JH would forget being passed over for the QB coach job, be oblivious to the circular firing squad the last three years and come back, plain and simple.

And don't blame the media for interviewing these kids.  They know the media game.  They knew it before they came here and will know it after they leave.

I'll give you a break since you're a newbie.  All the current players heard about for a month was the uncertain status of their coaches.  We have two recruiting weekends left before NSD and we don't have a coach.  All the talk is of a scheme change which will cause players to bolt including our team MVP who is a true sophomore.

BM and MSC hired a coach knowing LC was leaving.  Did you want them to wait?  If you noticed, Florida did the exact same thing this year.  It gave Muschamp a chance to evaluate players for next year.  You could say RR had the same opportunity except almost all the players he got to evaluate were leaving for the NFL or graduating.
