Big Tex Interview with Sam Webb

Submitted by GBOD79 on
Well it is clearly not over for us in the hunt for Big Tex. Sam Webb has just posted an interview with him and in it he explains that he never said anything to the Arkansas paper that reported we were out of it. He loved Michigan and is weighing his options. His mom told him to go where ever he wants to spend his next 4-5 years. He said distance is not a factor at all and that he wants to go someplace that throws him the most playing time. Haven't heard too much about the kid so far. Based on his size and nickname I'm guessing he's some type of lineman? That would be one massive RB. What are his rankings and position? I could look it up but im somewhat lazy.

And given his experience handling the ball in a skill position, I would be surprised if whoever ends up with him also doesn't use him in the goal line offense at some point. Maybe we can sell him on the visual hilariousness of him and Vincent Smith being in the backfield together at the same time on the goal line.

He would be a huge pick-up for us. Whether or not he comes, I am pretty happy with the class that RR has put together. I think that as of now, we are somewhere around 14, and slightly ahead of tOSU. While a lot will change before signing day, both positive and negative, we should be able to remain within the top 20 classes. Yes, there are a few too many of the lower ranked guys and we are admittedly a bit light on 4* and 5* talent, but I would think that a lot of that is related to our 3-9 season, our 5-7 season and all of the negative press implying that RR will not be here for more than a year (or less). Hard to recruit with all of that, and when we are something of an after-thought now that the season has wrapped up since we are not bowl bound. I would imagine that if all of the positive buzz about us that was swirling around when we were 4-0 - especially the hype following the ND game - had continued, this class would have been even stronger.

And remember that Steve Slaton and Pat White weren't highly rated and they turned out ok. The ratings services seem to evaluate guys more with regard to pro-style offenses rather than spread offenses, it seems to me. I trust RR to pick the guys who will do best in this system, "irregardless" of their rating on Scout, Rivals, etc.

You cannot substitute a DT in at QB on the depth chart in NCAA 2010 for PS2. DT can't go on the depth chart at HB either, but they can sub in at FB. If you wanted the DT to line up as a HB, you could sub in the DT as a FB and select a formation package where the FB lines up at HB. I'm not using names because I wish to avoid cursing our chances with any real prospects who play all of the aforementioned positions.

I know everyone assumes Big Tex is being recruited as a DT, but I've seen some quotes (from earlier in his recruitment) that he wanted to remain on offense. Is it at all conceivable that we are recruiting him as an RB? I know this doesn't jibe with our depth chart, but maybe the staff sees something special with him (I, for one, would love to have a Brandon Jacobs-like back in the bacfield ... but maybe not as much as I would love a defense that could "stop other teams from scoring.")

I think he would play at DT or maybe even Power DE for us. You gotta think he plays the position that gives him the best shot at the next level, and I think that would be defense. It would be nice to have a Jovorskie Lane type guy at QB/HB/FB for short yardage situations, but he could be an every down type player on defense whereas I think he's probably more limited offensively. Even if he plays defense, we could still use him situationally on offense. http://www.detnews.com/article/20091119/OPINION03/911190423/1265/SPORTS… "I will play anything," he said confidently to Scout.com. "I just love to play the game of football. Some teams are wanting me to play defensive end or defensive tackle and others like me at running back or quarterback. I honestly don't know what I like more. I love tackling and blowing people up for sure, but I also like running over people or shaking them when I get the chance. I mostly play quarterback for my team because that's where coach needs me, but when we get up he will let me play some running back. When we need stops on defense I play all over the defensive line. I believe that whatever I play, I know I am going to be good at it, and I know I am going to have fun playing it. So put me wherever. I don't care. I'll do whatever any coach needs me to do."

Sounds like he is a good athlete but from what I've seen he doesn't look too much like Brandon Jacobs, who is pretty freakish. I think Jacobs is taller and leaner. Could certainly him in some short yardage situations. Anything that gets us bigger and faster upfront on D is good. Lining up next to a maturing Campbell this guy could be something.

All the coaches need to do to get him is show the tape of the goal line series against Illinois. If that doesn't show him he'll get opportunity to have a huge role, I don't know what will

I think I heard that the coaches want Beachum to play WR and they said he could moonlight as the defensive coordinator. Let's not be ridiculous - he's not going to play linebacker or DE. Get that out of your heads.
