Big Ten/Ivy League Announce Head Injury Research Collaboration

Submitted by Hardware Sushi on

The title says most of it: The Big Ten and Ivy League announced a formal collaboration to study head injuries in all sports. Link found here.

In the long term, hopefully the partnership can reduce head injuries and long-term effects of concussions and other brain trauma. In the short term, it's a great piece of PR for Big Ten research and the CIC.

It will be interesting to see what sorts of improvements start to come out of this effort, I think, now that they are building this pool of knowledge for use by any discipline which could potentially contribute. It will also be interesting to see if other conferences engage in similar collaborations over time.

I like the idea of having engineers and physicists there at the summits, since it is a great way to help accelarate the introduction of medical research into on-the-field uses, and building the database for query by the whole of the CIC is great for that as well.

To see entire conferences get on board with the goal of making the lives of all student-athletes safer hopefully means that the message of safety is starting to change the culture around sports in a measurable way.

These 2 conferences were ahead of the curve nationally for this type of research and in working to protect their student athletes. It's awesome that they will now formally collaborate their efforts.
