  Big Ten Overall
Team Record Pct. Record Pct.
Michigan 5-1 .833 35-3 .921
Illinois 5-1 .833 18-14 .562
Indiana 4-2 .667 22-15 .595
Iowa 4-2 .667 21-15 .583
Purdue 2-2 .500 24-10-1 .700
Penn State 4-4 .500 18-16 .529
Wisconsin 2-4 .333 20-15 .571
Ohio State 2-4 .333 10-23 .303
Northwestern 1-3 .250 19-10 .655
Minnesota 1-3 .250 23-16 .590
Michigan State 2-6 .250 20-17 .541

A few interesting notes here.  Northwestern is off to a slow start. It is tough to start the Big 10 season against us but then to split with Wisconsin.  Indiana is a nice surprise as they split with us but took 2 from Penn State on the road.  They also split with Minny.

Another surprise is Illinois.  Now Illinois finished well last year, they lost several key players to graduation.  Someone forgot to tell them.  They beat State twice, tosu twice and split with Penn State.

doesn't everyone play similar schedules in non con? so you are saying the reason why our non con record is better than everyone else's is because they played tougher opponents? is that relative to how good they are or how good we are

We do share some common opponents. Make no mistake, this Michigan team is special. JT is world class and the offense is killer. You know its good when your #5 hitter leads the team in HR and RBI, while your #4 hitter leads in slg %, and you #3 has a high slg% and high RBI totals.

Purdue ended up with a tie against Valpairso because of darkness.  Ties are not unheard of in the pre-season games where one is playing in a tournament with lots of teams.  At some point, the officials want to use the field for the set of games so there are agreed upon rules for how many innings will be played.

Softball often uses international rules in the 8th inning.  The last out of the previous inning is placed on second.  That increases the odds of a score, but likewise for the opposing team.

rests squarely on the arm of Jordan Taylor. If she has a bad couple of innings in the regional/super regional, we are toast. The offense is very balanced this year so if Dorian has a bad game, others will pick up the slack. I am standing by my pre-season prediction of 4 (+/- 1) losses and a trip to the WS finals against a Pac 10 team (probably UCLA).

This is an unusual year for MIchigan.  Speierman has no losses, but I don't think we'll ever see Taylor getting pulled if she's having a tough outing and replace by Speierman.

Another reason for Hutch going with two pitchers is that the opposing teams have less at bats against your pitcher.  At some point if you've had 6-7 at bats against a pitcher, you'll be able to hit her.

Taylor is pitching an inning or two of relief almost every game and her stint in the first game.

is only a sophomore. She is still learning the ways of the D1 world. It is a huge advantage to have a great 1 - 2 punch. JT could handle all the pitching but at the cost of not developing Stephanie. There is an old addage in coaching circles, "One can never have too many pitchers". Each pitcher is different and brings a unique talent to the table. Its up to the hitters to figure that out.

Taylor came in as a freshman and was immediately pitching like a senior and by the Big 10 was the #1 pitcher - e.g., getting the start for Game 1 of the series.

Speierman has lots of good stuff and has made some great strides from last year.  However, her walks, WPs, excess pitches are plaguing her.  Taylor has almost a 10K to 1BB ratio; Speireman is not quite 2K to 1BB.  You want to minimize baserunners and she's not doing it.

She did start out great against Purdue and then loaded the bases in the 4th.  I thought she would have the opportunity to get out of her jam as we were up 6-0 but she didn't.

especially the K to BB ratio.  It needs to be 2:1 at a minimum.  Stephanie is just taking a little longer to develop than JT.  JT is a very special pitcher, maybe 1 in 500 or so.  The girl from Texas that recently committed to LSU may be in the same boat.

She will sometimes throw her rise ball and not get enough on (under) it.  It will hang around chest high and a good batter will jump all over it.  This has happened a few times, especially against Indiana.

However, I will take it.  These young ladies are not professionals and they are prone to a mistake or two, which is fine with me.
