[mod edit: ESPN reports, per WHB Radio, that the Big Ten has extended offers to Notre Dame, Missouri, Nebraska and Rutgers - information linked. Since these reports came out, Nebraska has stated it has no such offer and Missouri will not respond to speculation.]

Just wondering how much thought you put into this..

So the big 12 is going to go to 10 teams and not have a conference championship game?  Maybe for a year, but they will dilute at the expense of making it 12 again.  I'd think of SMU as a possible replacement for that conference as well (I mean, it's still a prestiguous school in Texas and they did win a bowl game last year).

ACC teams move to the SEC?

Big East loses 5 teams but only adds one?

You win my award for "least thought out post of the year".

[Edit: Also, OU and Texas out of the big 12 but the conference lives on? NO FREAKING WAY.  I want some of what you are smoking and I promise to stay as far away from MGoBlog while I am high off it]

One--if these reports are true, then it's likely the presidents/chancellors are working like this: we offer v, w, and x.  If v bites, then we offer y; if v and w bite we offer z, too. Etc. I note this because people are discounting the stories because they don't add up to an even number of schools. (Lesson: assume the honchos have put more thought into this than you!)

Two--this thing has for some time had a momentum of its own. The school heads may be feeling pressure to get the job done now in order to avoid lawsuits alleging they damaged the product of other conferences. . . or serious long-term anger over how things fell out. People claiming the timing is wrong may be way off base.

Three--I'd venture a guess that if they're offering ND they have had some behind the scenes back-and-forth already. Or are doing some serious arm-twisting of a little green guy in a backroom as we speak.

Wonder how all this will impair or improve M's long term prospects for championships in hoop and bball. Also wonder to what degree this may elevate ADs and athletic departments above academics long-term. . .

Can you imagine the TV ratings if BTN will air life the conference meetings between Delaney and the B10 universities presidents. Speaking of must see tv; that will be it.

I see it like this:

Rutgers is being used to let ND know the B10 could break up the Big East if they don't join.

If ND joins, there's one more spot, they could add Pitt, or better yet Syracuse and wrap up the NY market as much as is probably possible (ND, Rutgers, Syracuse).  In this scenario, they got their prize in ND and can add one more school as they see fit.

If ND declines, there are 14 teams with two potentially open spots.  The B10 makes an offer to UT/A&M, as losing MU and Nebraska likely spurs the breakup of the B12 .  If the Texas schools balk, the B10 goes after Syracuse/Pitt to wrap up the East and follow through on the threat to the Big East/ND.  Either way, they're at 14 so they could stop where they are without any further action.

For what it's worth, it's not on ESPN's front page.  The conferences either cajoled or convinced them that everything was poorly sourced information.

The Big Ten will get 35 armies plus two bonus armies each on Yakutsk and Northern Europe, and will promptly launch an offensive that will eliminate the Big East and garner control of North America with fortified defensive positions in Central America, Iceland, and Kamchatka.  This will ensure a steady five armies per turn thereafter, with a whithered Big XII struggling to maintain control of S. America and a paltry 2 armies per turn.

If we can successfully get the entire Big East to join with us, followed by Nebraska, Syracuse, ND and Texas...11 + 8 + 4...23.

Or...if we get Nebraska, Syracuse, ND and Texas, we remove Northwestern, fuse with the Pac 10, and remove Syracuse...11 + 4 - 1 + 10 -1...23.

Or even worse...23!...

(I hope Colbert fans catch this...)

Is it purely coincidence that lately all of these rumors are coming out of the Missouri-area?

Think Mizzou might be a part of this to campaign for themselves?
