Big Ten Expansion Survey

Submitted by MGoAero on

I'm interested to see the MGoBlog's readership opinion on Big Ten expansion, so I created a quick survey that should only take a minute or two to fill out:

I will post the results tomorrow.

I posted another survey last week regarding favorite teams by conference here (the survey is still open so feel free to take it):

I'm also glad that you added the last question. While I know I'm in the minority, I'd rather the b10 lose a team, go back to 10, and have a full round robin for the fball season. Also a balanced schedule in basketball would be nice.

I felt like too few options on several questions. Making me chose between four options without a middle value for indifference was a pain. I could care less if there is expansion or not. That's not an option at all.

an option, too. I am very divided about it--would like to see the Big 10 become dominant, but regret the influence of money on college sports (as I slurp it up). I don't see an option for me there.

But I think that we should kick out Northwestern if we were to kick anyone. They don't fit the profile of a large public research institution and are also not good at sports...

Why NW is in the Big Ten is a mystery to me. Everyone else can stay.

it's gotten to the point where they beat us fairly regularly in both football and basketball. I think the blanket statement that they're "not good at sports" is incorrect. Historically, their winning ways certainly don't compare to Michigan and Ohio State, but recently they've established solid football and basketball programs. Also, they were one of the early entrants to the Big Ten so they're not going anywhere.

I didn't know that all that mattered was football. To think I thought that the Big Ten was about being a large pubicly funded research instution. And ya know having a bunch of schools who are good at a VARIETY of sports.

None of you questioned how NW fits the profile of the Big Ten (because it doesn't), or how their athletics (as a whole) is comparable to other Big Ten schools:

2008 DC standings:
5. Michigan
10. OSU
14. Minnesota
19. PSU
20. Illinois
21. ND
27. MSU
38. Purdue
41. Wisco
44. Northwestern
45. Iowa

So yeah comparatively to the rest of the Big Ten they are one of the worst in athletics (overall) and they don't fit the profile of the Big Ten. They are the red headed step child, but if we are going to add one team then ND is a good choice so that NW can have a friend.

00-67
01-59
02-78
03-51
04-29
05-29
06-30
07-44

So yeah for 3 years in 04-06 NW was somewhat relevent in the directors cup but other than that has been a joke and at the bottom of the Big Ten standings... So again anyone want to explain why NW is in the Big Ten?
