Big Ten Elite: 1989 Michigan Basketball...
Premieres Tues Jan 14th at 10pm EST.
Still remember staying up late on a school night as a kid, watching the game w my grandpa, on my knees praying when Rumeal went to the line.

He's in prison so that'd be pretty difficult.

Anyone think Rumeal will be on there being interviewed?
Is that allowed?
Also, I can't wait. I've always been trying to learn as much as I can about this team. Limited info out there since they're overshadowed by the Fab Five teams. Hell, the average fan can't even name the starting lineup for the 1988-89 team.
I wonder if they'll talk about what in the hell happened against Alaska-Anchorage. Could be the only team to lose to a D2 team to go on and win the NCAA Championship.

I think you must be thinking of his Piston days. Terry Mills never hit a 3-pointer while playing for Michigan. He was 0-4 in his entire Michigan career, and 0-2 in 1989.

Some great statistical achievements from that team, some of which still stand, most notably a collective 56.6% field goal percentage as well as most points and most assists. Glen Rice went 7-7 from three point land in a game and scored over 900 points, as I recall.
I also think we sent four people from this team to the NBA Draft the next year - Rice went in 1989, but Rumeal Robinson, Sean Higgins, Terry Mills and Loy Vaught all went the next year.
Semi-cool story bro - Terry Mills is a Romulus native and my mother was his 8th grade English teacher.

had the phantom foul on Rumeal not been called.
With Rumeal being such a poor foul-shooter, I don't think the call changed the probability of who was going to win ex-ante.

After Rumeal missed two with the game on the line to lose to Wisconsin (IIRC) earlier in the season, the word was that for the rest of the season, he stayed after practice shooting free throws for 30-60 minutes. Who rebounded and tossed him balls? Assistant coach Steve Fisher.

Mark Hughes didn't *play* a minute in the NBA. He might have been on a coaching staff, though.
You might be thinking of Calip, who did have a cup of coffee with the Lakers.

Koenig's best ability was self-promotion. Aside: There always seems to be one of those on good Michigan teams.

in the lineup. He broke his foot mid-season, and their team went 4-4 without him. Indiana actually won the Big Ten that year, but Illinois was given a #1 seed instead due to the return of Gill and some impressive end-of-season wins. (And Illinois was 2-0 against Indiana that year, both without Gill.)

Kenny Battle also played in the NBA (drafted late in the first round by the Pistons but traded away).

Would have been Rice's jumper at the buzzer in regulation going down IMO.

that illini team was ridiculous good. we were lucky to beat them. i saw them pound us at home from the second row - it was like watching an NBA team.

I was crushed the year before by a second consecutive loss to UNC in the NCAA Tourney and made a deal with God that if we didn't win the whole thing the next year, I wouldn't believe in him anymore (how's that for a passionate teenage girl fan!?). Then the whole Frieder to AZ, Schembechler "Michigan Man will coach Michigan" thing and I was considering letting the Big Guy off the hook - but he didn't let me down!

Glen was the man. What a team, my favorite michigan hoops team ever. Can't wait for this to air. I still remember Glen in 97 with the Hornets, when he had a stretch of 3 months of the best shooting I have ever seen. He was in the ZONE.
