Big Ten Bowl Payout
An interesting article on the payout for the Big Ten bowls this season. Big Ten Teams Share Bowl Payout Equally I've read in a couple other threads that people think Indiana is getting the best deal for not travelling, but that's not really the case. These statements were assuming that the revenue is split equally, but that's not true. The Big Ten covers travel expenses up to 100% of the revenue first, then it divides the profits equally. Well apparently with the exception of Nebraska, since they are new. But all that the Big Ten will reveal is that they don't get an equal share. The assumption is they get less, but there is the possibility they get more. Considering that 10 of the 12 teams in the conference are going bowling, the assumption is the Big Ten loves the present bowl system and would hate a playoff. Maybe, but it seems like at least three teams may not have their expenses fully covered, since Penn State, Illinois and Purdue are all keeping 100% of the revenue their bowl hands to the Big Ten. Since the article is on PennLive.com they only detail the extra expense that Penn State will have to cover on their own, estimated at $200k-$600k more than the $1.2 Million the bowl is paying out. But Penn State won't be in the red, their equal share of the profits will be about $2.6 Million so they still have their heads above water. Not as far above water as Indiana, who has no travel expenses at all, but still, Penn State is clearing $2 Million to be equally shared amongst all athletes in their various programs. So I'm sure the Penn State swim team is very greatful that Wisconsin doesn't keep the bulk of their Rose Bowl profits like in a more Texas style arrangement, because the Grand Daddy of them all pays out some serious cheddar (pun intended).
Here's the top four ( out of 10!) in the payout list and their related expenses expected. I guess the hotels in LA aren't that much more expensive than the ones Michigan will be forced to reserve in New Orleans. Check the link for all the details.
Bowl (Big Ten team):--- Bowl pays conference --- Big 10 pays for travel expenses
Rose Bowl (Wisconsin) --- $22.3 million --- $2.3 million
Sugar Bowl (Michigan) --- $6.1 million --- $2.050M
Capital One Bowl (Nebraska) --- $4.55 million --- $1.775 million
Outback Bowl (Michigan State) --- $3.5 million --- $1.775 million

Isn't the payout for the Sugar Bowl $17 million not $6.1?
December 7th, 2011 at 6:11 PM ^
pretty sure your figure is much closer than 6.1M. aren't all the bcs bowls more or less equal?
December 7th, 2011 at 6:15 PM ^
I don't think this article has the right info. The payout for the Sugar Bowl is usuall 17-18 million unless there is some caveat about at-large teams which I highly doubt.
December 7th, 2011 at 6:16 PM ^
If a conference gets 2 BCS bowls, they do not get the full pay out and the rest is split around.
December 7th, 2011 at 6:18 PM ^
AQ conferences get an additional $6.1m for an at-large bid (in addition to the $22m for the autobid), a non-AQ would get the full $17m share, though.
December 7th, 2011 at 8:45 PM ^
So the Sugar Bowl is only paying out around $12 million this year instead of the full $34 million. If so, who keeps those profits? Seems like $20 million is a pretty good incentive to not take a non-AQ like Boise as an at large.

Excellent question...

According to this article from AOL Sporting News, a good chunk of money gets paid out to non-AQ conferences. It wouldn't surprise me that their share this year (no non-AQ's in BCS games) comes from that difference in the Sugar, plus the SEC and Pac differences.

We must be using some incorrect information or else this would be the biggest conflict of interest ive ever seen
December 7th, 2011 at 6:05 PM ^
Pays out $22m?! Wow. I had no idea it was that much
December 7th, 2011 at 6:11 PM ^
I think it increased. I could be wrong, but I think last year and years before it was around $18M.
December 7th, 2011 at 6:13 PM ^
All BCS bowls have an $18M payout according to Wikipedia
December 7th, 2011 at 6:15 PM ^
these payouts do not seem to be in agreement with any other source i can find...

Doesn't the Big Ten++ get its own cut of the money?
December 7th, 2011 at 6:37 PM ^
The Big Ten received about $37M gross in bowl payments in FY 2011 with around $27M being distributed to the B1G programs--that's about 73% of the total. Michigan's projected share was $2.47M net after all the expenses were deducted in the manner described by the article above.

Nebraska gets a smaller share for some period of time. The Big 10 schools all paid into the BTN, and Nebraska's reduced share is essentially paying the other schools for its future share of the conference revenue.
That said, the Big 10 is the best conference around because all of its schools are generally on the same page regarding competitve rules and the conference shares. The SEC has a huge divide between the East and West right now because of its divide on oversigning. The East has generally done away with it and isn't cutting kids. The West has just been slowed down some. This divide is going to hurt the SEC going forward.

According to USA Today, the first team from an AQ conference earns a $22.3 million payout for making a BCS bowl, and each additional team from that conference earns $6.1 million.
Interestingly, by not having a non-AQ team in a BCS bowl this year, the BCS is actually saving about $7 million. This is because if a non-AQ team makes a BCS bowl, $26.4 million dollars is shared among the non-AQ conferences. If none make it, only $13.2 million is shared. So, the $13.2 + $6.1 for the AQ team replacing a non-AQ team = $19.3 million, which is $7.1 million short of the total payout that would be due if a non-AQ team made it.
