Big Ten Bloggers Share Epic Doom in the UM Secondary

Submitted by iawolve on

Adam was doing a recap on Stanzi's passing efficiency numbers and projection for the rest of the year:

Yet at the same time, that competition is, at some level, a concern. Stanzi's line at Michigan was 17-24, 248 yards, 3 TDs, 0 INTs. That's good. But some of those passes were really, really easy; the slant to Derrell Johnson-Koulianos was less a "what a throw by Stanzi" play and more of a "explain how J.T. Floyd is any better at pass coverage than a scarecrow tied to a broom" play. It was ghastly. And even with Indiana and Minnesota looming on the schedule, Iowa's definitely not facing a worse, more comically inept secondary than Michigan's all season long. Michigan Defense: We Appear To Be Trying.

This season often reminds me of an Every Three Weekly article I read years ago titled "Michigan's Defense or Rocks With Scary Faces Painted on Them?" that attempted to evaluate which would have better success stopping Big 10 offenses.

So, the good news is that we've had defensive struggles before.

We just played the #7 and #15 ranked teams in the country and basically the main reason we lost is mistakes. These are both good teams, not a failure to lose, especially when you put up great offensive numbers against them. The next three games should be telling, but I have a good feeling that 8-2 is certainly capable.

I'd be more scared if I was like Florida and had tons of talent with some experience and could only put up 7 points against Miss St. I look at some other top teams flailing a bit with much more experience and see RR is doing pretty well given the circumstances.

If I was the former "hottest coach in the game," and I had blown chances to recruit Denard Robinson and keep Cameron Newton, had Trey Burton sitting on my bench, and was still bowing to alumni pressure to play an overwhelmed legacy recruit at QB, I would definitely be more scared.

Meyer is a great coach, but he has nobody but himself to blame for his current predicament.

Meyer really is mismanaging the QB situation there.  He also failed to identify Denard as a potential star.

But, Meyer has won a few of those NCs in the past few years, so he is likely safe for a while.  He is also still recruiting lights out, so it will take more than one bad season for him to be canned.

Also, I really dislike him.

Florida has lost ten games since the beginning of 2006.  I'd love that problem.

Besides, he had to kick Cam Newton off the team and Denard had to have extraordinary work ethic to become the QB he is today.  Legal recruiting doesn't really permit that level of evaluation.

At least a scarecrow tied to a broom might have made Johnson-Koulianos pause and think for a split second to try to figure out what the fuck was going on.
