"In the Big House" Full Version by Pop Evil

I would have posted this in the other thread, but it was buried and probably wouldn't be checked much.  I found the full version that was just published on ESPN (per youtube), and I didn't see it posted yet, so I decided to share.

Some people probably won't like it, but deal with it.  I will probably end up playing this before leaving my house on Saturdays heading to campus.  I, for one, think I might be warming up to it.

I really don't think the song itself is any better than We Are ND. The video's better, because it's a montage of football instead of ugly girls, Mike Golic, and Tucker Carlson in a green suit. But the song sounds like something an ad exec for Rotel wrote for his son's Nickelback tribute band to perform.

What does "Overrated" even mean? And how does that even apply? Disagree with me, sure, that's not a problem (and it appears from the rest of the thread that the consensus does). But how exactly my comment is "overrated" I can't figure out.

Regardless of whether people here like it or hate it, I am positive that if this exact same style of song/vid were made for Notre Dame or MSU or OSU with lyrics about their school that everybody on this board would be making fun of them endlessly.

Not unexpected for a fan site to have a bunch of homers on it, but take a step back and realize the only redeeming value this video has is that it is pro Michigan. The actual song and video are cheesey beyond belief. There's one part in there where the lead singer just starts listing off random buzz words like "tradition" without even forming sentences. It's like the Big Ten division branding executive started a garage band.

If you're talking solely about the visual images, then I agree (although I've seen about 85% of those plays on other hype video already). When I wrote that the song/vid are both cheesey what I really meant was:

1. The Video w/ audio included is cheesey, and

2. Just playing the audio by itself is also cheesey like that one guy said he's going to do in Ann Arbor this year before games. Thank god I graduated last year and don't have to listen to that crap ruin a perfectly good football Saturday morning.

I get it's not everyone's type of music, which I stated in the OP.  Nobody held a gun to your head and forced you to listen to it.

Everyone on this thread making fun of people for the music they like (not only directed at you)? Immature, and frankly uneccesarry.  I posted this because I thought some people would be interested, which from the reaction, though small, some people were.

"I'm so cool because I hate Nickelback like everyone else"  Unique, original and downright witty.  You should write for a music column.  Or better yet, make your own music.  I'm sure your rap/electro/trendy music would be more famous than this band (yes, they are famous, and for a reason).

If you don't like it, I have a suggestion: don't listen to it.  I'm going to get negged to hell for this, but I don't care.

Why don't you go about living your own life and let the rest of us do the same?  It's a fucking song, who cares if you don't like it?

So let me get this straight, you can have your own opinion as long as you like it? The fact that I don't like Nickleback does make me a bit cooler than those that do. Maybe they make up for it in other aspects of life but I have the edge there.

This band is also not famous. Your autographed CD will sell for nothing, so don't try to be on the next episode of Pawn Stars. I don't like the song and stated that I don't, you posted and I gave an opinion. That is kind of what musical taste is all about.

but I had no idea what you meant by "my buddies," and that kinda sparked it.  But there is an important thing that differentiates our "opinions": I wasn't a dick.

In my OP, I didn't attack anyone, nor did I tell you that you had to listen to it.  I said that SOME might find this interesting, I thought I'd share.  I hate Nickelback too, and while I don't like most of Pop Evil's music (I like a couple songs), everything I stated was in a rational manner.

You can talk about hurt feelings and whatnot, which isn't the case, but your snyde humor will only get you so far.  Speaking rationally and clearly will not only get you respect, but it might make you a few friends, too.  We can all be big, bad posters on a message board, but can you convey them in a critical but constructive matter that adds something to the conversation other than "derp nickelback derp."

OK, I just got off a 16 hour shift and I'm going to get off my soapbox and catch some z's.

EDIT: This rant doesn't mean that I'm the one who went around negging everyone with a differing opinion than me.  That is the work of others.

There's nothing wrong with a local band putting out a hype video.  They are fans, and as long they show respect, which I think they do, its all good.  My kid loves the video and I guess that's the point.  If its bringing people to campus and getting them more interested in UM football, I'm not going to act like a hipster and start hating on it or anyone for liking it.

That said, I'm so over it.

As with all music, beauty’s in the ear of the listener. If “In The Big House” had been a song from the previously undiscovered bootleg tapes or MP3s of Marvin Gaye or . . . The Rolling Stones or . . . Bob Seger and The Silver Bullet Band or . . . Kanye West or . . . Beyonce or . . . Joe Reynolds and Jack Kennedy, instead of Pop Evil, would the audio have sounded better? (Yes, none of those probably ever would've touched this song.)

And as with all hype videos, beauty’s in the eye of the beholder. What sucks for one might be a-MAIZE-in’ for another.

Maybe the only redeeming feature of “In The Big House” will be the video and . . . IT’S MICHIGAN!

The visuals are awesome.  Being of the generation that liked some songs of this style I didn't think the music was horrible, but it also wasn't great, and the lyrics could use some major improvement.  I like the "In the BIG HOUSE" line, but the hail courus is aweful in my opinion.  As per most recent discussion on the blog I think having the band and singing fans would make for much better audio.

(they're from my home town of Muskegon).  And I like "that type of music" in general.  I just think this song is really unimaginative and uninteresting.  A clear pub grab by a band that really doesn't need it.  It reminds me of those lame NFL songs that get played on occasion (the lions have one that is horribly bad, and the Bears have their equally lame "Bear down, Chicago bears" anthem.

The Bears have "Bear Down, Chicago Bears" which is their fight song. It was written in 1941, it wasn't a Publicity Stunt by a band.

I don't know the history of the Lions one, but "Bear Down" is much more akin to a college fight song than it is this crap

I find it interesting that so many people complain about this song, and that Brian came out so hard against it when he posts the Nanooks pump up video frequently to punctuate the hockey season.  Am I just missing the joke?  Cause as a song, the Top Gun Theme is pretty lame, but used with video it's pretty awesome.
