Big House 5K! Who ran it?

Submitted by SteelBrad on
I know there were a few that said they were running/walking it in other posts. What was your experience?

My fiancé and I ran it and it was a great experience. You simply can't beat running down the tunnel on to the field and being able to touch the banner as you cross the finish line. My only recommendation would be to have different start times for runners/walkers.

Overall, a great day. Go Blue!

Old Unklebuck just ran the 1 mile event today with my daughter, not quite ready for the 5k.  Overall I thought it was a pretty cool event. The turn-out was great.  I plan to step it up next year.

I ran it with a few friends. It was so nice to run through campus then finish in the Big House, especially with the great weather this morning. I thought it was a really fun event, and I'm looking forward to doing it again next year.

I ran it! It was awesome! It was my first race. I regret not trying to touch the banner. I was afraid I'd fall and be trampled. I will train for that for next year haha. I was glad they had net times but I agree, it was tough sometimes to dodge walkers. All in all a great experience.

You're not alone there. I got a bit too intimated by the amount of people (and cameras haha) to try touching the banner. And I do regret it, but it gives me a reason to run it again next year now. Overall a great run and a beautiful day! I PR'd at 24:24 so I'm really happy with the result.

1 mile fun run with the kids then the 5k. Great day for it. As the OP noted, there should be different areas for those with different speeds. It was also smaller than BHBH was in years past which makes it more managable than the ten or fifteen thousand who showed up last time.

With my daughter, who's a freshman. It was an awesome experience. Daughter took a video of me jumping up and touching the banner. Been on the field before, but never thought I'd get to touch the banner. Great event, will definitely do it again next year.

My kids did the 1 mile and my husband and I did the 5 K. It was a little weird that the fun run was right before the 5 K - my kids didn't want to run alone, so my husband ran with them. He was already tired when we then went from the Big House over to State Street where it started. They definitely need to sort by speed or walking. It is so irritating to have a group of walkers 3-4 across in the middle of the road. Were they playing the Victors in the tunnel? I don't remember. They did in the past. Also irritating - you can't go on the field to get your child after the fun run. If my kids had run by themselves, they would have been a little overwhelmed looking for us somewhere in the distance.

I ran it.  The starting location was terrible.  It is a bottleneck down there and there was no instructions over the loudspeaker or with signage to segrate the walkers from the runners and the fast runners from the slow runners.

There were way too many walkers up front.  I almost tripped over a lady in a walking boot.  I knew I was in trouble when I looked around me and I was surrounded by people with headphones and sweatpants on in the starting area.

Anyways, the route was really nice though.  Good to get the hill out of the way early and roll downhill near the end.  I PR'd it and finished near the top of my age group much to my astonishment.

I hope they do it again but refine the start so those who want to run it can do so unimpeded.

EDIT:  And I hope they add a 10K or 5mile race next year.  A longer race would be fun as 5Ks are over almost before they start.

First time running in any kind of event and absolutely loved it. The weather, the campus, and finishing in the stadium by touching the banner made it a memorable experience. #GoBlue

We always go down and tailgate for the spring game. We get up early in the morning and it's a full day of drinking. Drink and tailgate before the practice, then head to AA and hit the breweries. Makes it kind of tough to get up the next morning and run 5k.

Were there bands and stuff playing along the side of the course? In years past, there were several performances being done as you ran along. Thought that was kind of nice before.

I have noticed that the bottleneck is always there with this race and it was hilly in the past. Did they run the same course as before? Most 5ks get sorted out by the first quarter mile. In the past, they even had signage out to try to seperate the faster and slower walkers/runners, but most ignore them. When I did run it, it took about the entire first mile to get sorted out. That's rough. I usually just treat this as a fun run and don't worry about my time. You can wait however long you want to start, though, as your time doesn't start until your feet cross the starting line. Considered waiting in the past, but haven't actually done it. I like a nice, flat course to try for PR's and such

I ask, because a couple of us are considering running this in the future, but we'd really have to tone down our spring practice day festivities. DId they use the actual banner this year or was it a mock banner? In the past, they used a mock banner, because they wanted to reserve the actual banner for gamedays and such.

I really wish they had this race another weekend. We have an hour drive and that makes it kind of rough to drive down and back for the spring practice and then come back to AA the next day. I don't want to get a hotel room just to run this race.

1. Cheerleaders were there and some piped in music at the beginning and end but less than years past.

2. Different course but effectively the same. Really hard to PR this unless you are in the front. The first mile was spent dodging. It got better but still a lot of folks who weren't ready for this distance who stopped and walked the last mile. There were also clearly faster folks who were stuck in back.

3. Pretty sure it was the mock banner. Doesn't really matter to me though.

Did the 1 mile fun run with the kids. Agree with other posters that the field nazis were way too strict after for families there to cheer on others (especially the guy at the tunnel who was literally yelling at parents without bib #s). This is supposed to be a FUN RUN fergodsakes!

my first ever 5k and I didnt exactly train for it so I will take my 31:19 and go to the hot tub with it haha.

It was a lot of fun and I will certainly be doing it again next year, as well as a few others between now and then.

I plan on running at the Cherry Festival in Traverse City in July.

I did it today. This run is not the same as past Big House runs but it was pretty similar. I was really bummed when it was cancelled last year. So glad we had one this year!

I did it. I never liked running but ending at the stadium got me to sign up. Touching the banner was very cool. For a first time runner and training was limited I did it just under 40 minutes.
