The Big Chill attendance record may not be broken?

Submitted by HELLE on

With just a few weeks until the 2014 Winter Classic at the Big House, StubHub still has almost 14,000 tickets for sale. The cheapest seat is $133. The Big Chill at the Big House had an official attendance of 104,173 . If Guinness holds this game to the same standard of actual tickets scanned, the NHL is going to have a difficult time surpassing that number. I tend to watch StubHub often and I've never seen this degree of lack of demand for an event in Michigan Stadium before. I believe this years Ohio game had roughly 2,000 tickets remaining with a few weeks to go. As a fan of the University of Michigan, I really hope they don't beat our record. Thank you for your money. Go Blue!

I've always resented the athletic department for selling our record to the NHL. I hope the announcers are forced to acknowledge numerous times during the game that it is the 2nd highest attended hockey game in the world behind the Big Chill

Big Chill sold out so easily. Tickets were $15. $10 if you had a group of IIRC.

Winter Classic tickets were crazy expensive. I think it'll still be full, but I think they should have made the tickets reasonable.

Interested to see the price when they next do a Michigan game outside.

I've been saying the same thing for months.  Michigan Stadium records should only be broken at a Michigan event; it's Michigan venue & it's not like we don't continuously set new records.  I lost count over the years at how many games I've been part of a new stadium record!  Especially since I will not be attending the Winter Classic, please don't break the record.  ;)

Assuming every ticket is sold, will the attendence record actually be broken?  Are there more physical seats available now then there were for the Big Chill?

Maybe this will help:

Bell's Winter White and Two Hearted Ales will be available for sale on the concourse. This to my knowledge is the first time beer has ever been sold at the Big House (old timers can correct me if there was a bygone era of beer-selling). In the suites, Bell's and Founders will both be available in bottles.

I will have attended both, so it doesn't make much of a difference to me.  Still, as others have said, don't count out the Leafs fans.  I expect them to show up in force.

Let's just hope the game doesn't go to OT, and chalk up an L if it hits shootout.

Frankly, I'm not surprised about this at all.  The problem here is that the ticket prices are insane.  The Winter Classic is awesome, but in reality we're talking about a regular season hockey game.  It's going to be very difficult to sell that many seats for the prices they are going for right now.  I expect when the prices drop, the tickets will move

You're right.  I really want to go, but there is no way i want to pay over $100 for a seat.  Not to mention $60 to park at Pioneer.  If the weather was good I was thinking about coming just to tailgate and check out the fan fest.  Would love to get a cheap scalpers ticket, but I dont think that will happen.  The bad thing about the tickets on stub hub is that they are not instant download.  This means you wont be able to buy a ticket for cheaper the night before the game like you can for Michigan football games.

Will that count?

Wonder if the guy will bring his bong machine with him.

I kind of miss the days in the Big House when one could get some whiffs of Mary Jane a few times during the game.

No one who was old young can forget the infamous Ten Cent Beer night in Cleveland vs. Rangers in baseball.

Maybe Brandon and NHL need to offer beer at 1985 prices, they'd still make a small profit and have more fights in the stands than the NHL allows these days on the ice.

How is there a lack of demand if the tickets are still over 100 dollars? There have been a few Michigan games were it was difficult to give student tickets away.

I'm honestly more excited for the Alumni game at Commerica than the pathetic money grab that is the Winter Classic. Nothing against the Big House, I just hate Bettman and his NHL. I'll be watching college football on New Year's Day, not this.
