Mixed emotions... but good for the Big Ten.

It's like... I both hate and enjoy that MSU and OSU have beaten two top tier teams. I'm conflicted.
EDIT: If you just jinxed OSU, tip of the cap my friend...
January 2nd, 2015 at 1:09 AM ^
I didn't root for Ohio State; I rooted against Alabama and the SEC. I am very happy with this outcome. OSU now has a chance to be embarassed by Oregon on the biggest stage in college football next week.
January 2nd, 2015 at 1:27 AM ^
I had the same mindset. Sure made for a difficult explanation to my son, though: "Dad, I thought we are NEVER supposed to root for Ohio State to win???"

was only a matter of time until this thread was posted.
January 2nd, 2015 at 12:27 AM ^
Just think of it this way, OSU and MSU are doing the heavy lifting to rebuild the B1G's cred in the nick of time for us to exploit it to our full advantage when Harbaugh brings us back to relevance :D

That's actually a great way to look at this. Well said!

Drew Sharp - STUFF IT!
January 2nd, 2015 at 12:55 AM ^
He's too busy trolling us over at FREEP as we speak.
January 2nd, 2015 at 1:11 AM ^
Yeah, I remember the Freep. It's a rag I stopped reading about seven years ago. I suppose it's noble of them to keep such incompetent dolts as Snyder and Sharp employed. It's nice of them to pay Mitch Albom for not giving a shit about sports anymore, too.
But that doesn't mean they are actually worth clicking...

Don't worry, as Oregon will squash them!
January 2nd, 2015 at 12:59 AM ^
Not sure about this. It seems Urban is running a pretty tight ship over there. I'm sure he'll have his team more prepared for Oregon's tempo than Jimbo's band of merry pranksters was.
January 2nd, 2015 at 1:00 AM ^
True, just like most people thought Bama would squash them...
Unfortunately, Ohio State has a big coaching advantage in that game and 11 days to prepare. I wouldn't be surprised at all to see Ohio State win.

When Oregon was beating MSU, Ohio State was losing to Virginia Tech. (Sep 6)
Moral: that was a long time ago.

Have you considered the possibility that OSU was more easily able to handle MSU's defense due to the fact that OSU was able to use game tape from when they played Oregon as a way to find things to exploit?
January 2nd, 2015 at 6:15 AM ^
OSU doesn't have a big coaching advantage. People need to stop with the ESPN created narratives. Helrich is 15-3 in the Pac12 and the Pac12 is a lot better conference than the Big10.
OSU one that game because Sims turned the ball over and couldn't throw it down field. Mariotta will not have that problem.

And they are now 0-3 in their last three Sugar Bowl games.

While I don't share your distaste for MSU, I do for those other guys. I watched the Sugar Bowl figuring that if the other guys lost a close game it would still gain the conference stature. Now in a strange way, since my daughter is a Duck, they will be my Michigan proxy and hope they will crush those other guys. There is only one possible scenario in which I could possibly consider rooting for those guys, if they were to play Arizona.... and that is still a big maybe.
January 2nd, 2015 at 1:10 AM ^
OSU winning is better than MSU winning, for U-M. They are our traditional rival -- we are expected to mostly be equals. If they rise it gives us a great chance to showcase ourselves in a huge, meaningful game at the end of the season, every year. Good for U-M.
MSU has just not traditionally been at the same level, nationally. Their rise threatens us in a way that OSU's never could. I hate seeing MSU do well much more.
January 2nd, 2015 at 1:58 AM ^
That is a fair point. But since MSU is still a Michigan school, and I had lots of MSU friends, I can't help but root for another Michigan school except for the obvious 1 game. But I don't see MSU's prominence lasting. We have just been lousy for the last 8 years, 2011 notwithstanding. I hope the Harbaugh hire plays out as well as everyone hopes.
January 2nd, 2015 at 7:42 AM ^
I only want those teams to win if it benefits Michigan.
January 2nd, 2015 at 12:31 AM ^
I do not like Ohio State at all, and I'm not rooting for them. But in the spirit of Big Ten "unidy" (as so eloquently stated by Spartan) I am ok with Bama losing. I'm not ok with Ohio State winning, I'm just ok with Bama losing.
January 2nd, 2015 at 12:33 AM ^
I am rooting for the Big Ten, not Ohio State. I just have to keep telling myself that.
January 2nd, 2015 at 12:36 AM ^
It's a new era of Big Ten domination, especially with Harbaugh now. Karma's coming to bite the SEC cheaters in the butt.
January 2nd, 2015 at 12:53 AM ^
^^^^ This... While I was definitely not cheering for OSU, I was most definitely enjoying every bit of Bama/Saban pain.

I'm not sure I'd go that far, but I will say that the SEC looks completely average this year. Which brings me far greater joy than OSU getting lambasted by them again would.

Look what happened to the almighty SEC WEST:
SEC WEST | CONF | OVR | BOWL W/L |
---|---|---|---|
#1 Alabama | 7-1 | 12-2 | LOSS |
#7 Mississippi State |
6-2 | 10-3 | LOSS |
#9 Ole Miss |
5-3 | 9-4 | LOSS |
#19 Auburn | 4-4 | 8-5 | LOSS |
#23 LSU | 4-4 | 8-5 | LOSS |
Texas A&M |
3-5 | 8-5 | WIN |
Arkansas | 2-6 | 7-6 | WIN |
#13 Georgia won 37-14 over #21 Louisville, and #16 Missouri won 33-17 over #25 Minnesota. Texas A&M and Arkansas won mid-tier bowls between teams well outside of the Top 25. South Carolina won a fleabag bowl versus Miami.
The class of the SEC all went down in flames.
January 2nd, 2015 at 8:29 AM ^
was supposed to produce BOTH teams in the national title game.
compare to Big Ten East:
Ohio 42-35 over Alabama
MSU 42 - 41 over Baylor
Maryland loses to Stanford 45 - 21
Rutgers clobbers NC 41 - 20
Penn State 31 - 30 over BC
much as it pains me to point out, MSU's two losses were to the teams in the title game

FWIW, I loved the call. They're expecting run run run. Catch em off guard. If not, you at least keep that in the back of their heads on 2nd and 3rd down.
