Fact, bears eat beets.
alternate headline: man does job
Fact, bears eat beets.
Bears, beets, battlestar galactia.
how about "the victors"
As long as they don't play the White Stripes every five minutes like they did last season (which it seemed, anyway), I will be happy. Also -- they need to invest in a new sound system. Was this addressed with the new additions? I didn't see anything on it.
In fact they did. You will hear it this season.
half of it done for the spring game (built into one of the two score boards.) It sounded so much more glorious than the god awful distortion they said was the white stripes last year.
Actually they had it built into the scoreboard by the spring game but didn't have it hooked up in the new press box yet so they used Portable Speakers for the Spring Game so what you heard there will not be the same as Gameday. I am sure it will be better. The portable speakers for the spring game were on tripods in the handicap seating area in the North Endzone stands.
more Led Zeppelin sounds amazing, but the band already plays some (which is sweet). Ted Nugent's "Stranglehold" would be great, as he is from Michigan like you said. The Blackhawks used it a for their playoff entrances and I thought it was sweet. Ultimately, anything but the absolute crap that was played last year (please no Journey and no Sweet Caroline)
I'm on board with your last sentence.
"Valhalla, I am coming!"
How much more badass does it get? Throw in Ufer's "Yost in football Valhalla" before or after for maximum pre-game RAWWWR-ness
I should have thought of that one...
Any Bob Seger would be good...Kid Rock is from Romeo...would be an improvement over the Penn State White Stripes copy.
On the other hand, how about just more MMB?
Iron Man after Defensive plays are sweet... but it's good when the band does it. I wouldn't be opposed to a loud speaker version as well though.
I also thought "Welcome to the Jungle" worked for the defense coming out.
I'd like to see the PA be a little more serious when needed (get loud/exciting stuff) and have a little more fun when games are out of hand (like the crowd doing the wave).
If we have to have the piped in music, let's still give the band it's due and make sure that what we do pump in works
totally agree, the band's "Iron Man" is amazing
I'd go with Hello Operator.
Let's make it happen.
Can you get me number nine?
Intro to "Killing In The Name"
Intro to Soundgarden's "Rusty Cage"
would be nifty.
And now ya do what they told ya
I almost added that to the list in the first place, but I wasn't sure.
the intro and first couple bars of Ghost of Tom Joad would be awesome.
If I cared.
But how about "There'll be no shelter here!" It's a rockin' tune, plus it will remind our opponents where they are.
I love the Boss like nobody's business. When Floyd Money came out to Born in the USA against Ricky Hatton I had goose bumps. It was the perfect song at the perfect moment. I think most American fans were planning on rooting against the cocky Mayweather but the combination of the British fans booing our national anthem, their loud support for Hatten, and the Mayweather entrance shifted the crowd's support. Now if only he would man up and fight Pacquio
EDIT: Found the video:
DOUBLE EDIT: the video only shows the national anthems, not the entrances. It gives you a good idea of how obnoxious the British fans were being though. Then imagine the first few notes of Born in the USA coming over the loudspeaker as the Americans in the crowd went nuts
There is not a single song on that list that I would agree with. But that just goes to show how much of a 'no win' situation this task is because everybody has different tastes and opinions. I respect your strategy to come up with original stuff though.
it is an impossible task because the age range/taste vary so much because michigan football touches all ....
many college aged kids wouldnt be down for almost any of those songs ...
honestly the first time eminem came on for the nd game, we went ballistic, for instate kids the guy is our fricking hero (they then overplayed it) but i seriously think they should break out some "Not Afraid" this yr
my fav michigan singer is segar but i dont think his music qualifies as pump up music
No, please God, no.
As long as there isn't any more AC/DC before the team runs under the banner. Yeesh.
We collected a whole list of songs for the Big House the other day.
I don't really care what's played, so long as it's played by the MMB
No disrespect to the band (I married a drum major) but the MMB when seated is not effective in getting the rest of the crowd into the game. The echo is so bad that people in the South end of the stadium usually give up trying to join in the songs. If they were somehow amplified through the speaker system, then I would be all over it.
However, until that time, I am open to the same proportion of music being played through the speaker system.
No disrespect to the band, I love them. But when they try to play rock songs, it just doesn't work. It wasn't hard to mix the band and the PA music last year. It can be done.
Bears, beets....Battlestar Galactica
incredibly irrelevant/wrong, but how much does it cost to get a song over the PA. are there any fees or anything like that?
Fact, some of the music was a good choice
In fact, not a fact. Only e-pinion.
Which bear is best?
FACT: Brown Bear
I'm definitely down for Muse. Been listening to Absolution a lot lately. Lots of good songs on there that would fit well in the OMG RAWK category to pump people up.
Good list... I would add
Iron Maiden - Run to the Hills and Fear of the Dark
Motley Crue - Kickstart My Hear
Megadeth - Symphony of Destruction and Countdown to Extinction
Metallica - Enter Sandman, Master of Puppets and Orion (I imagine the crowd chanting during the beginning part and then the team running out when the guitar really starts)
Rage - Wake Up
Judas Priest - Hell Bent for Leather
Ozzy - Crazy Train
AC/DC - Hells Bells (do not remember hearing it before, usually its Thunderstruck)
AC/DC - Hells Bells (do not remember hearing it before, usually its Thunderstruck)
c'mon guy. osu uses it
we need to think outside
Norma Jean- Memphis will be laid to waste
Project 86 - Sincerely Ichabod
Emery - Walls
Seen all of them live numerous times. Good stuff, good stuff.
That road leads to the dark side, to brokeNCYDE
Who cares. Just win baby!!
That said, ever since Brian posted the hype video featuring "My Time" by Fabolous it has been on heavy rotation on the iPod. One vote for that to be played now and then.
He's gonna rip yer lungs out, Jim.
I'd like to meet his tailor.
We need the coner to come up with some kind of lyrical wizardry for Michigan football that could be broadcast on game days
This guy in the crowd did not get "more into it".
I was fine with the music selection sans Sweet Caroline last season. The only problem I had was the one or two games they played the same thing 3 or 4 times. I don't really care if the music is played at minor league parks or professional games all the time. Since when does everything we do have to be just ours or unique to us? Anything to get the stadium louder is fine with me!
I would rather the band get the crowd going but I sit in one of the many sections that can only hear the band during pregame and halftime.
"Since when does everything we do have to be just ours or unique to us?" Ever since we were the Leaders and Best. We are already attacking tradition somewhat by playing loudspeaker music. Last year when played White Stripes and Journey at the OSU game the OSU fans were more into it than our fans were because the songs are already used at OSU games.
I think using loudspeaker music appropriately, (ie to get people and players pumped up, or drown out opposing fans) can work I would like our fanbase to develop its own unique sound. I don't think that is too much to ask. Think of how much music is out there. There is no need to play the same shit as everyone else.
Going to a Michigan football game is a special experience. Why would we want to water that down by copying an NFL team's PA playlist? They've turned to Jock Jamz out of necessity, because they don't have marching bands, let alone unique songs like "The Victors."
We really should be investigating how to make the marching band more audible to the entire stadium. That's one thing everyone can agree on.
If the MMB signed a contract to record an album with Jock Jamz, recorded Sweet Caroline at MTV studios, and it was then piped in, how would you feel?
I graduated in '09, but I am, however, curious as to why my graduation date from the University of Michigan is a relevant issue? Are you attempting to insinuate that because I am younger than you, I am somehow incapable of rational thought? Perhaps you thought you could "get me," had I not graduated from Michigan, lauding the superiority of your degree over mine?
Regardless, your hyperbolic, often isane, and always incomprehensible ramblings, are far more bothersome to me than loud music.
I hate Neil Diamond. I hate the rock music. However, don't pretend like we haven't borrowed or stolen traditions from other programs, or that a small, simple, step forward into the 21st century is somehow the death knell of our program.
... it seems to me that many recent grads are not as familiar with the days of athletic success at Michigan and appear more inclined to accept as good (or tolerable) what my generation finds unacceptable.
Oh, in case you were napping, we won the national championship in '97 and nearly played for it again in '06. Get on your alzheimer drugs before you post next time.
If I actually knew who he was, upon his death, I would pipe Jock Jams:Greatest Hits into his funeral.
You know the campus legend that says there's a Michigan flag on the Moon?
It's not true.
Yes we are Michigan! I graduated from there in '04. I love that we have our own traditions like the winged helmets, touching the banner, the Victors, and so on and so forth and I would never want those to change.
What I am trying to say is as great as those traditions are I feel we as fans fall into this mindset that everything we do has to be a new tradition and should only be ours. Like the students today think it is tradition to chant "You Suck" to Temptation or when I was in school the Daily wrote an article about Tempation and said everyone should make their hand look like a claw when doing the arm motion. The original way of doing it was with a fist which signified pounding the opposing teams drive into the ground yet somehow it went from the fist to a chop to the stupid looking claw.
So should we get rid of all of our hockey chants then as well since we stole them from Cornell and Miami (not that Miami) uses them as well?
How about basketball? Doesn't our band play certain songs that OSU or MSU bands play? Does that mean we should stop playing those during basketball games?
There are certain traditions that should never be changed but everything we do does not have to be only ours. There can be a few things that we do that can be like others such as piped in music and the type of music played. To me there is a reason you hear the same songs at alot of stadiums across the country maybe because those songs are great to get crowds going.
Everything we do doesn't have to be 100% unique, but in general we should aim to avoid copying other people so our own experience doesn't get too watered down. (And really, given how much we now charge for tickets, I think it's important that we don't get too cookie-cutter.) I don't believe that there are only 10-15 songs that get fans fired up. I think the reason why you hear the same playlist in every pro sports stadium (and a growing number of college stadiums) has more to do with laziness on the part of stadium PA guys, who just copy each other rather than look into finding more original music
..."Mother". Every time the defense comes out onto the field.
Tell your children not to walk my way
Tell your children not to hear my words
What they mean
What they say
110,011 chant with the chorus as the D hits the field.
EDIT: I know the official capacity is 109,901, but liked the look of 110,011 better and know we'll have at least that every game.
all that's being discussed here are rock-ish songs. Nothing against those but can we get some rap music involved in the discussion. I know they've used the Eminem- 8 Mile song between the 3rd and 4th quarters but there are definitely others that can be included.
Mc-5 kick out the jams, dammit
before, I turn off the sound a lot because I can't stand some of the commentators, but Twisted Sister-We're Not Gonna Take It would be amazing if we went up big on any of the teams that have beaten us the past couple years.
Never mind, i just realized how dumb an idea that is, i just love the song from my days as an underdog, but obviously that isn't Michigan
What about that song by the Lo Fidelity Allstars -- I think it's called Battle Flag. That one can get you going a bit, although the uncensored version is a bit heavy on the f-bombs.
I thought that was recorded by a band called Pigeonhed?
There is only one song that has a jammin' intro for the crowd to get wild on.... OUR HOUSE sung by the Mary Jane Girls. I think the MMB can really get into this song!
What about Know Your Enemy or Bulls on Parade by Rage Against the Machine. That'll get you amped!
Or a Lansing Lugnuts game. Actually, I haven't been to a Lugnuts game. These lists/requests might be unfair to the Lugnuts.
If Taylor had a minor league hockey team, most of these songs would be on the playlist.
And no one has suggested "The Victors."
game, it must be "Roll with the Changes" by REO Speedwagon. Never has such an uptight fan base so needed to give it's 'new' head coach a break. This goofy sing-along would acknowledge it for all, publicly
Also, Ten Thousand Fists (in the Air). 110,000. And the MMB drummers can join in
I think the team should get some input, kind of like baseball's at-bat songs. We can sit through whatever they want (or more realistically what they're allowed to play), especially if they're pumped up and winning.
Worse to you, random person in crowd? Maybe.
Worse to the team of about 85 18-22 year old athletes, and the reason you're in the crowd in the first place? Maybe not.
Personally, I don't care if they want to play "Look at my horse" on loop, if that's what it takes to pummel the opposition.
That probaby wouldn't be a bad idea. Let some of the fans choose some of it, and let the players choose some. Good way to balance it out.
The idea is that the crowd gets pumped to see the team get pumped. I would also venture a guess that out of the mix of guys on the team (who I certainly don't know since we're not classmates or anything) they wouldn't be so crazy about Neil Diamond or Jock Jamz and mayyybe would pick some stuff yall can tolerate at the cost of players getting more "amped."
Also, I take it you haven't heard "Look at my horse," because considering your previous comments you'd probably be vomiting in an un-auto-tuned, Youtube-free corner somewhere rather than giggling. That statement was obvious hyperbole; I'm not suggesting that letting the team pick their own muzik will be like spinach to Popeye.
Right, because as everyone knows, we've stopped playing The Victors.
Exaggeration was purely for effect.
That being said, the fact that Sweet Caroline plays in the same stadium as The Victors is an insult to the great history of the University of Michigan. We're not an Irish Pub.
Also, could you please include the phrase "Jock Jamz" in your next post. I feel as if your last post was a tad Jock Jamz light.
What part of this thread are you not getting here? The point is to rid the Big House of "Jock Jamz". What were are trying to do is find rock/rap/whatever that other teams don't use, to get the crowd loud when we're on defense.
You know so much about jock Jamz, and yet you did not know that the legend of the Michigan flag on the moon is just that, a legend.
This leads me to believe, that you either know more off-hand about Jock Jamz than the University of Michigan, or that you just spew shit out of your ass 99% of the time as if it's god's honest truth. It seems that the only time you do any real research is while attempting to get in a zinger.
I hate Neil Diamond. I hate the rock music.
Quote me, from earlier in the thread.
This is why I cannot have a rational discussion with you (nor do I even try to).
You see only what you want to see, and it seems as though you don't even bother to read anything anyone posts.
[...]yet you love the piped-in music that was lame a decade ago.
You saying that, makes me question your critical reading skills.
Maybe, one day, you'll acquire a sense of humor to go along with your avatar of another man's wide open mouth.
Then you top it off with the not so veiled gay joke.
Way to do the University of Michigan proud.
As an aside, while you were leading those U tours, how many gay jokes did you crack?
The whole point of this thread is to find better music than last year i.e. Sweet Caroline
AutoTune greatest hits
Sitting on my shelf, right next to Season 1 of The Jersey Shore, and other riff raff /floo flabble.
did you get my 2nd email?
The last one I got is dated July 25th.
thats good. Is the girl in your house ok with me buying that ticket? And how do I pay you/her?
Iron Maiden- Aces High
MC5- Kick out the Jams
Motorhead- Iron Fist
Guns n Roses- Out to get me
Dio- Rainbow in the Dark
Rush- Working Man
Van Halen- Panama
How about something that will get the players hyped up. Not sure how many of them listen to classic rock.
I listen to death metal and country. Do I expect others to? Not at all. So why should we expect the team to be super thrilled with what we'd want to hear?
They should be hyped regardless, music or not. The crowd on the other hand...occasionally needs a kick in the ass to come alive.
I just think if we're going to be piping stuff in, it might as well be stuff the players like.
Mike the band. F'ing mike the band already. The Big Ten has rules against electronically modifying the bands in the stands, but I feel like that's an outdated ordinance.
Other conferences have already put in PAs for the bands and of course no stadium is as vast or open as the Big House. We have an excellent, tradition-rich marching band, so why not let everyone hear us?
Mike the band. F'ing mike the band already.
Never heard of him and/or his ensamble. Are they any good?
and what about ann arbor's own bob seger?
like a rock
ramblin man (denard)
I can't listen to "Like a Rock" without thinking about Chevy trucks.
First, poll the team. Get what they want first.
Some others off the top of my head and/or agreeing with above posters
Anything by Rage Against the Machine,
Springsteen- climax of Born to Run right after a good running play "Tramps like us, baby we were born to Ruuuun!"
Jay Z- 99 problems-useful for many situations.
Pearl Jam- intro to Cordorouy after we score a touchdown "The waiting drove me mad!"
Of course there's no chance any of these would ever get played but...
LCD Soundsystem - All I Want
The National - Fake Empire
The Smiths - Bigmouth Strikes Again
Radiohead - Everything In Its Right Place
Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti - Bright Lit Blue Skies
Animal Collective - What Would I Want Sky? (from the 2:20 mark to the 3:10 mark, during a replay timeout)
Deerhunter - Agoraphobia (for the defense)
Lloyd Cole & Commotions - Are You Ready To Be Heartbroken?
Todd Rundgren - Hello It's Me
Wild Nothing - Chinatown or Our Composition
The Lemonheads - It's About Time
Joy Division - Transmission
Fleet Foxes - White Winter Hymnal
by about 1000%. I would +100 you if I could.
Maybe I'm in the minority here, maybe I'm old, maybe I'm too much of a music snob, but this entire discussion makes me sick to my stomach.
It feels like discussing our favorite companies and which billboards we'd most prefer littering up our beautiful stadium. "Sometimes when you're on" during a commercial break would definitely give me the chills, but I can't get behind piped in rawk music no matter what. I agree with some of the other folks in that we need ot find a way, any way, to make the band louder (mic them, move them, more loud instruments and less flute, whatever it takes).
I wish I knew how to make a poll...I really wonder how many mgobloggers would agree with me that piped in rawk should be banished to the depths of hell, even if the only alternative is a barely audible MMB. Maybe it's too late and I'm trying to fight a battle that has been lost, but I'm really curious what the breakdown of opinion would be.
How about We Are the Champions after we win the Big Ten Title...
"One Shining Moment"
... in the middle of the street!"
i could definitely see the big house rockin to this
The Stooges - I Wanna Be Your Dog
Sponge - Plowed
MC5 - Kick out the Jams
I could live with hearing that in Michigan Stadium.
Just mic the band. This rawk shit is terrible. OP suggesting Muse and Ted Nugent? In Michigan Stadium? Are you serious?
If we have to have cheesy classic rock blaring in there, let's roll with something decent like Harry Nilsson's 'Jump Into the Fire'
I can't stand the Nuge because of his politics. I am sure there are others who feel the same way about my favorites like RATM and MC5. But on football Saturdays, Michigan Nation is to stand united against the evil forces of [insert opponent's name here]. It may be best to avoid political stuff (for the same reason politics are taboo on this site).
If you want to get everyone really pumped up, the best is classical....
Undisputed classics, definitely a cut above the Jock Jams. Don't you think?
