"Better Son/Daughter" poll

Submitted by shorts on

OK, so I'm the one who made the video last year. This one (I've forgotten how to embed):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-IV-xZZay9E

I just finished a horiffically busy All-Star week here in Phoenix (as some of you know, I work for a major sports media organization here), so I just got a chance to see the thread asking about the 2011 hype video.

My plan was to change it up this year -- since the RichRod era is done and gone, I was thinking it'd be a good time for a new song, something fresh to signal a change and new philosophy and whatnot. But before I start working on something, let's take an informal poll.

Should there be another "Better Son/Daughter" hype video this year, for tradition's sake?

I don't feel like setting up a Survey Monkey or anything, so let's just take it here in this thread. Yes or no? And if no, do you have any particular suggestions for a song for this year's hype video? I have a song in mind but am not totally sure it's the right one.

UPDATE: After about 100 comments, my rough count has things at about 60-40 in favor of a new song. So ... that's pretty close. Maybe I can find time to do one of each. And thanks for the song suggestions -- there are some pretty good options there, and I've still gotta listen to a few of them. Feel free to keep those coming.

I think the song is great for M football videos and would love the tradition to continue. However if you do end up changing the song, stay away from anything with "Lil Wayne", "Soulja Boy" or anything related to that, please.

but so am I. I like "I want it all" from Queen, it is pretty motivational. I think it is a bit smaltzy but "Eye of the Tiger" really might fit this team this year.

yes to you, sir. I'm one of those douchebags that rarely knows excatly what I want but I always know what I definitely don't want. Rap of any kind for this video falls squarely into the Do. Not. Want category. It's why I'll watch all these recruiting highlight videos with the sound off. Rap is a fine genre of music but to me it just plains sucks as background music to football.

You know, I just have to disagree. I am a 40-something soccer mom raised in small town whitebread America and I hereby avow that sometimes the right rap song set to a sports video is just what the doctor ordered.

That doesn't mean our fearless video maker above should include one in his particular project (and I vote yes, he needs to make one for 2011).

I think it is a great song, albeit unique for a hype video. Btw, how many youtube messages did you get today concerning this? Because I was one of them haha

I think I only got one or two today, but there have been a lot over the past few months. Definitely appreciated all the positive feedback! This was the first time I'd ever really made this type of video.

But I think that a new song is needed. You don't want to take away from the original video by using it every year. Rilo Kiley is for 09, we need to find something for 2011, it's a new year and a new coach.

My first thought was that you should change the song... but now I'm on the fence. So far we haven't been much help, I know.

I can see a new song starting a new tradition no doubt. I think that's where I'm leaning.

I forgot how great that video was. It absolutely fit that year perfectly and should be in the mgoblog HOF. Which is also why I think it's time for a new song. The story line of the previous season and that song went so well together I think it will loose it's aura if you use the same song this year.
Just my humble opinion of course, I'm sure you'll make the right choice if you do decide to use a different song and we'll enjoy the video either way. Thanks in advance! Keep up the good work.

There's some merit to Florence and the Machine's Dog Days are Over. Works on multiple levels.

That said, it doesn't quite have the same edge as Better Son/Daughter so may end up just being girly and emo. Hard to say.

Maybe there's a cover version of it that would sound more Brian indie/cool, or a male version. Or just the original.
The first video was a true masterpiece, and I wanted more, but the follow-up didn't link as perfectly emotionally as it did after 2008. So maybe something different. But it's quite an achievement to top.

I think a great song to put a hype video to would be "Blitzkrieg Pop" (Ay, oh, let's go!!) from The Ramones. It's a shorter song, so the actual video bits would probably work as shorter segments. Denard running during "ready to go" and a couple of still shots of Hoke pointing at the end of the song. Throw some fizz in it and you got yourself a spritzer.

That still is my favorite hype video of all time. I get goosebumps.

I had never heard that song before but it fit so well. I'd say another version adapted to the current situation might be fun, but I could see changing it up as well. Go with your creative impulse on it.

I love your video. It was my Saturday morning anthem for two years.

That said, maybe it's time for a change.

Just a suggestion, how about Followed by Ghosts- Clear Blue Sky

I think it has the dramatic highs and lows necessary to make a phenomenal video.

It's not quite original. HBO used it as a finale outro for one of their 24/7specials and did a spectacular job.

I think if you put some sound bites from Hoke, Brandon etc. it could be awesome.

I just went to my wife's 20th high school reunion with her in La Jolla, CA and met Pierre de Reeder (Rilo Kiley bass player).

We talked for a while (trust me, unless you also went to the same high school, going to someone else's reunion is really boring) and I told him that their song had become the unofficial anthem of Michigan football these past years -- he thought that was awesome. Said he was definitely going to check out the online video.

So I'm going to vote "yes, keep it".

It's time for a new song. There is lots to be excited about this year and there were plenty of exciting (in a happy way) moments last year. I don't think that Better Son/Daughter is the proper expression of the state of things at this point in time. It was perfect last year. But not now.

The trick will be to find something else that is creative and will make the video distinct from all of the pump-up videos in the world that are simply highlight reels put to hardcore rock/rap music. Put on your thinking caps.

THIS IS MICHIGAN, why can't we have more than one: old = tradition, new=innovation.

Sorry for the additional work, but your public demands it.
