"Better Son/Daughter" poll

Submitted by shorts on

OK, so I'm the one who made the video last year. This one (I've forgotten how to embed):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-IV-xZZay9E

I just finished a horiffically busy All-Star week here in Phoenix (as some of you know, I work for a major sports media organization here), so I just got a chance to see the thread asking about the 2011 hype video.

My plan was to change it up this year -- since the RichRod era is done and gone, I was thinking it'd be a good time for a new song, something fresh to signal a change and new philosophy and whatnot. But before I start working on something, let's take an informal poll.

Should there be another "Better Son/Daughter" hype video this year, for tradition's sake?

I don't feel like setting up a Survey Monkey or anything, so let's just take it here in this thread. Yes or no? And if no, do you have any particular suggestions for a song for this year's hype video? I have a song in mind but am not totally sure it's the right one.

UPDATE: After about 100 comments, my rough count has things at about 60-40 in favor of a new song. So ... that's pretty close. Maybe I can find time to do one of each. And thanks for the song suggestions -- there are some pretty good options there, and I've still gotta listen to a few of them. Feel free to keep those coming.

One vote for keeping the song, it chokes me up just a bit every time I hear it. I really enjoy the hype videos, keep up the great work...

One more time with Better Son/Daughter.  After this year, it'll have to be something else.  But I think it's fitting for one more year.

Maybe this is too goofy but "Five Years Time" but Noah & The Whale might have some promise.  Or "Daylight" by Matt & Kim.    They are both upbeat.

Not sure any of these beat Dog Days are Over though.

IMHO the best theme song for a Michigan hype vide would be "Tub Thumping" by Chumbawawba.

"Will be singing, when we're winning, we'll be singing -

I GET KNOCKED DOWN, BUT I GET UP AGAIN

YOU'RE NEVER GONA KEEP ME DOWN!"

Great party toon, might need some editing but love the message in context with where we are at.

The Rilo Kiley song, as great as it is, belongs to a past era.  This year the tone should be less depressed, more blood thirsty.  Ideas:

Okkervil River, "For Real":

Muse, "Stockholm Syndrome":

Dirtbombs, "Underdog":

Edit: I haven't been active in a long time, and somehow I forgot how to embed.  Apologies.

Here's a simple idea: what about the full version of "The Victors"?  We're throwing out all these popular songs that no one can agree on when we have the best fight song in the country.  A little silly, no?

Seven Nation Army- White Stripes. Great slow/fast tempo and a Baltimore reference.  The "that ain't what you want to hear , but that's what I'll do" line is a perfect spot for a finger-point.

Yes please please please! You have no idea how much I love those videos. Give me the chills each time, and I love showing them off to friends to try to give them a sense of a) how intensely passionate and emotional (happy and sad) it is to be a Michigan fan and b) how hip our fanbase is (for making a hype video featuring an amazing indie song).

I think the lyrics and the tone are absolutely perfect....perhaps now more than ever. After the last 3 years of struggles, we need redemption. Lowlights from all three of the last years combined with recent highlights would be absolutely perfect.

If you do another song (hopefully in addition to rather than in place of) I would agree w/ wildcatblue above in recommending Okkervil River's "For Real." But really, I can't think of anything lyrically or emotionally perfect to describe my feelings as a fan right now than Better Son/Daughter.

I don't think many people will read my post, and most won't care. There used to be a group called Fort Minor that made rap/hip-hop. They aren't very mainstream like Lil'  Wayne or Soulja Boy, and for the most part their lyrics aren't offensive.

Liking "Dog Days Are Over" more and more. . . .The lyrics to "Get It On" might not fit (except for a brief reference to a Michigan 2011 opponent that has special significance for Brady Hoke), but it's another suggestion.
