Betsa Chops Up Chips, Softball Tops CMU 2-0

Submitted by South Bend Wolverine on

Team 40 travelled up to Mount Pleasant for a mid-week showdown with the CMU Chippewas this afternoon, and will be heading back to Ann Arbor with a 2-0 win in their pocket.

While the winning streak continued for the Maize & Blue, the offensive Rennaissance from the weekend did not, as the Wolverines struggled to generate anything at the plate.  Kelly Christner was the hero, driving in both of the Michigan runs, going 2-for-2 with a solo shot and an RBI single.  She also drew a walk to load the bases with no outs in the top of the 7th, but nothing came of the threat.

Fortunately, Megan Betsa made sure that none of that mattered today.  She carved up the CMU order, going the distance while allowing just one hit.  While her 9 Ks on the day are actually a little low by her standards, the senior ace extended her scoreless-innings streak to 36.

More importantly, the team is now on a 9-game winning streak.  The Northwestern Wildcats will put that to the test over the course of a 3-game series at Alumni Field this weekend.  The Cats are struggling this season, but did manage an upset over a ranked Wisconsin team last weekend.  Michigan will likely need all 3 of these just to keep pace with Golden Gophers in the conference standings.

I think it was actually a smidgen warmer up there than it was down here today, so at least they got this victory in some nicer weather to boot.

Very impressive stat there, incidentally - 36 consecutive scoreless innings. Very nice to see this team continue to dominate in this way.

Coming into today (NCAA stat database won't update to include today's events 'til later) she was #1 in the nation in total strike-outs (and almost certainly became the 1st pitcher to hit 200 Ks on the year unless something crazy happened elsewhere).  Also #3 in Ks/7 innings with12.7 - a number that dipped slightly this afternoon!

record book, the scoreless innings record is 105, which seems even more insane than the 36 that Betsa has already racked up. Congratulations to her. If she gets anywhere near that 105 mark, this team is going to be winning a lot of games. Keep up the good work ladies!

It's still early. But I seriously feel our conference champs streak may be coming to an end. I think not playing Minnesota hurts us this year.
