Best thing you saw: Week 5

Submitted by mi93 on

Hopefully Wifeday 2017 (or Spouseday or Husband-day so we're all-inclusive) was a success wherever you may be.  Luckily, I still got to watch a bit of football.  And while UCLA - Colorado looks like it'll be a good an entertaining game throughout, it's time to call it a night here.  With that...

Non-Michigan:

Not gonna' lie, seeing the ESS-EEE-SEE look like hot trash is a little fun.  Frankly, it looks like we're heading toward Bama-Clemson III, but there's still lots of season and maybe, just maybe, Auburn and/or Georgia can get lucky on the right day.

Regardless, somebody called it a couple weeks ago that the best thing they saw was the Iowa Wave.  This week, the best thing I saw was the Spartans doing a live feed back to Iowa City and joining the Iowa team in its weekly wave.  Easily the classiest move out of EL since...ever?  It was cool to see them do that, and proper respect due for it.

Michigan:

Still 4-0!  Woo!  BEAT STAEE!  And, oh yeah, the best thing I saw was the James Joseph Can Opener.  Who knew?  So talented in khakis.

What you got?

The box score of our hockey exhibition game.  Western Ontario is probably terrible, but we treated them like it.  10-1 win, shots were 60 (!!!) - 20.  Power play went 4-12.

They lost to New Mexico last year too FWIW even when they were a 10 win team. And Hawaii and Wyoming.

Don't schedule Air Force because....they beat Boise State a couple of times? And Notre Dame 22 years ago? Yeah, waste of practice time sure. But the challenge posed was way overblown.

We've won all of our games comfortably, as we should. But it's pretty clear none of the 4 teams we've played is good. At least Florida is scraping by barely with wins.

None of the four teams we have played is exceptional, but three of the four are good. Agree that Cinci is bad. Air Force is a good team. Their game went was very close with top 25 SD St. NM clearly has their number. Florida is also good not great. Their defense is very good and their offense is approaching functional. Purdue is also good having played Louisville tough and they trounced Ohio and Mizzou. The season is still young, and a lot comes down to specific match-ups, injuries, game locations, and relative experience of the teams. M is an extremely young and talented team. It is very reasonable to expect significant improvement as the season progresses.

There is a reason for that. Everyone can hide from it or disguise it or just flat out not recognize it, but we all know what the reason is. The bottom line is your team is not going to look good even in victory if you have a completely incompetent QB. If Speight did not get hurt there is a good chance we lose that game. The QB position is that important and Speight is completely lost and cannot produce even when plays are there to be made. Defenses were stacking the box because they had zero respect for Speight to make a play down field. He processes blitzes and wide open receivers way to slow.

Make no mistake, if we had a competent QB in these games they would have been blowouts.Speight just flat out is not very good and should not be the QB at Michigan. Peters has more talent in his big toe. Okorn will be servicable, but we will see a lot better QB next year and moving forward. I do hope Okorn can put it together as it is obvious that the offense can roll with dsomeone who can deliver the ball. Example: Iowa wins easily if there Qb does not stink it up against msu.

If Okorn delivers Michigan will look a lot more formidable and make ther defense look even better. I like Speight as a person. He is a good guy, but I have no idea what Harbaugh sees in him as a Qb. He played well at times last year, but I really think Michigan was a lot better than people realize. He made some plays, but look at the players we put in the nfl. You make it even in the QB, Michigan beats everyone last year. I supported Speight long enough. He just flat out is not very good. Wait till you see Peters and McCaffery play. It will be a night and day thing. Period.

If Harbaugh starts Speight when he comes back he will be making a grave mistake. Everyone and I mean everyone could see what is wrong with this offense. Another thing Michigan needs to take advantage of teams aggressiveness and run more screens and short passes which is what Okorn is much better at.

Overall, a pretty terrible day of football. PSU and MSU both shrug off challengers (PSU emphatically) and no top 25 underdogs won that I'm aware of. Rutger doesn't count as a challenger. The only awesome game was Wazzu over USC on Friday night. Watching Clemson's defense shut down VT was disappointing, if unsurprising.
