Best sections for kids to watch a game at the Big House?

Submitted by Dallas Walmart… on

I just booked my plane tickets to attend the UM-BYU game in a few weeks.  I'll be attending with my two sons, ages 8 and 11.  I'm trying to avoid buying tickets in a section where they won't be able to see if the fans are standing most of the game.  I've stood almost the entire game at every game I've been to at the Big House (I've always sat in the end zone or in a corner of the stadium), but I've also heard many references on the board to the "down in front" crowd at the games.  If there is such a crowd that sits in the same section each game, where is it?  I would appreciate any advice on which sections fans under 5 feet tall can sit in and have a good view of the action.

The student section is the only place where fans stand all game.  In the endzones people might get up somewhat more frequently than those in the sections along the sidelines, but the difference is minor.

Avoid the student section (I don't even know if you can get student seats anymore), and I would say seats that are up higher are better than ones close to the field. When I've sat in the first 20 or so rows, people stand to be able to see the whole field.

Break out the AMEX... The down in front crowd is generally between the 30's on either sideline. In all my games at michigan stadium I enjoy them all. But, particularly the higher up I sit... The better sight lines and views to watch the plays develop.

As mentioned by others, other than not being in the student's section and considering that you want to avoid people standing in front of you, see if you can get seats in any section, but in Row "A" - which is the front row - when they lowered the field, they added rows "A" & "B".  The other nice thing about row A is that you have the ledge there to put your hot dog and drink on AND the kids may get on the big screen as the camera men often focus on people there.

I sat in Row B two years ago for the Akron game and loved it when they were on our side of the field. The major issue was I was right behind the goal post so I had that in my face the entire game.

Michigan scored the winning TD right in front of me, but I had to watch the final play on the big screen as it was on the other end.

Don't worry about the standing most of the fans sit. And then stand when a big play is occurring/ or in celebration. I'd recommend sitting in the row 55-60 range. IMO there isn't any bad seats in the big house.

near an exit, nearest an aisle with highest priority on closeness to concessions, restroom facilities (know where the family restroom is located) followed by shade or shelter from rain.

Also might want to avoid the visiting sections esp. if a nasty rival is in town.

Well he's coming in for BYU.  I know there are probably SOME hypocrites in Provo, but I would like to think that in general, BYU fans aren't overly nasty.  At least not the ones that would be travelling to Michigan.

Dunno if you are looking to buy 4 tickets to BYU, but if you are I will sell you 4 for $100 each.
Section 40, Row 38.  Corner opposite from the band (untess they have moved the band this year) which I always liked when I was a kid.

I can't guarantee your kids won't have to stand up for most of the game as that can happen in ANY seats, but I sat in or around these sats when I was a kid and I always saw the game.  Field was configured a bit different back then because it hadn't been sunk yet.

Section 34 only stands up for big plays, and if you're higher up you get a great view of the entire length of the field.  It's endzone, so you might be able to pick up tix for less.

I hear that you'll know you're close to his seat when you hear long, directionless, vaguely (sometimes pointedly) political and therefore not board appropriate rants. Be sure to ask him how he managed to get kicked off of 11 Warriors too, if you want a story that will at least elicit a chuckle. Not sure if the kids should be around for that experience though.

From what I hear they'll most likely curse all game, drink heavily, and will be all amped up on tons of coffee. On second thought, you may want to sit in the BYU section.

Buy seats in section 34 from the university. They have seats in about row 60, which is close to the entrance so not too many stairs to walk, high enough up the stadium feels big but not so high that you're too far from the field. Also, there is a large chunk of unsold seats I doubt the AD will sell out at their prices, so you'd probably have a sparse number of people in front of you/not have to worry about standing.

Two years ago, I took my kids to their first game at the big house. The 2013 opener. Got seats around the 40 yard line in the Jack Ross club section. A bit pricey but well worth it. Easy use of restrooms, concessions, etc and they they able to go inside to cool off between periods. Awesome seats.

A lot will depend on game action and score differential. Expect most people to stand during big plays and TDs. Most will remain seated during blowouts. Row A is a sure bet.

Honestly wherever the tickets are cheapest, so if/when they lose their minds and want to leave the game you won't be too mad about spending so much money.

That's why I'm sticking to basketball games for the live experience until my son gets older as the basketball games are short.

Took 2 of my nephews to two games in the student section (8 and 9 years old).  They stood the entire game.  They loved it.  Students around them were very nice and friendly.  But if you belong to the down in front gang...well....

My 8yr old has been going to games since he was 5yrs old and to Broncos games since he was in a bjorn The nice HUGE new scoreboards the Get Off My Lawn types fought are perfect for kids to be able to see the game. Otherwise I picked him up occasionally so he could see. Not sure there is such a thing as 'the best section for kids' because you can always have super tall people in front of them and be SOL.

as an alum since 84.   we are up near the exit rows, just above the handicap seating.  the folks around us only stand when it's a big deal and we should all be standing anyway.   my kids have been with me since ~ 2000 and it has never been a problem with them seeing, nor has the language been a problem of any significance.

one other thing about the endzone is that you can explain the game to them much better from that view point.  gaps, holes, who is mike/wes/sam/free/strong, pulling guards, counters, etc are all much easier to point out from there, though admittedly i am a long-time player and now coach so i probably am more interested in those things than a, well, normal person.

I didn't think this was worth posting a thread but I have a similar question. I was thinking of bringing my almost 6 year old to the Oregon State game and I'm wondering if anyone has ever had an experience with a kid that age? My biggest concern of course is how he will do with all the standing and not being able to see.

I have taken my kids, and have sent a bunch of buddies with theirs.  Section 39, Row 80 is a very good section/row for kids.  I have been there for 20+ years (season tickets), regulars attend most weeks, very few visitors, most sit all game (except for bg plays orf course).  Great depth perspective and angle.

I actually still have 4 tix for my seats for that game (only one left), email me if you want to discuss - [email protected].

I sat behind John Wangler near the 50 yard line for the Maryland game. There wasn't much to stand up about that game (aside from my high school daughter playing with the MMB) and a Norfleet TD return that was subsequently called back, but I think that area is less prone to standing the entire game, perhaps because you have to have had season tickets for about 110 years or spend a pile of dough on Stubhub (or be John Wangler) to sit there.

not worth it to take a child until age 10.  Obviously modified if they watch 6+ hours of CFB on Fall Saturdays...I recall a football game at age 10 (in an era of tons and tons of rushing plays...the Original #1 Receiver had just made his splash) took seemingly forever.

My kids are not old enough to meet above, yet.  But we will probably try to sit near the entrance/exit portals when the time comes, concessions would be very important to them, the game secondary.  Im in Row 18 and there's a fair delay climbing all the stairs, plus everyone ahead of you.  Bathrooms on the 2nd level concourse NE side have ridonculously long lines.  I'd shoot for the south end zone as a "major" mens bathroom which moves quickly seems to be there.
