Best place to park on game day for free??

Submitted by Juice41 on

Anyone know a good place to park on game days at Michigan for free? I dont mind walking at all since I will probably arrive around 10 am to the UConn game (starts at 3:30, so hopefully I can beat most of the traffic), I dont know the campus too well but any good parking spots for free on campus where you wont get ticketed without a student pass(not sure if Ann Arbor uses them, i go to Dearborn), preferebly near East Quad?

Seconded... in many cases an additional 5-10 minutes of walking can save you $20.  As someone else here noted, try going east of Packard and north of Stadium (but not so far that you get into the student ghetto).

This question has been posted here before and there's another part I always add >>>

Ann Arbor isn't very big.  Accordingly, it makes no sense to take part in any pre-/post-game "parking lots" like the ones on Ann Arbor Saline road.  Take a few extra minutes and go around the nonsense.  This goes double if you're approaching from anywhere between 270 and 135 (degrees).

I usually park in the northern part of Central Campus in the streets or by the Nursing college.  It is a little bit of a walk, but it is a fun walk as you start in the quiet neighborhoods, cross the diag, and work your way with the masses past the increasingly dense drunken students to the stadium.

I always park on Shadford - north of Stadium, east of Packard.  I can usually find a spot on the first block east of Packard if I arrive by 10-10:30 for a noon game; next couple blocks if later.

I often park in businesses for free by Howard Cooper Audi / Porsche on South St street as I’m usually coming in on I-94.  You may think this is a far walk, but I can arrive 30-45 minutes prior to kickoff and walk about 200 yards to the Brown Lot I believe, where the Michigan Tennis Courts are located (Varsity Tennis Center2250 S. State St. Ann Arbor, MI 48104) and take the free game-day trolley through the back nine of AAGC which drops us off in front of the clubhouse for a short walk up to the stadium.  Trolley runs up until kickoff and starts back up after the game.  After the game I’m back on the expressway in no time.

if you want to park free and close to the stadium, you can park on the street in the neighborhoods off of Main St or in the triangle bordered by State St / Packard / Stadium, but you're going to have to get there awful early and endure some evil glares from students / townies who forgot to park their car in the street the night before. best place for free parking is one of the student lots on North Campus, take the bus down to Central campus and then walk across the Diag and to the game, but granted it is a far ways away.

You go a couple blocks down East U and the parallel streets, the parking's free...but going to be a bitch to find on a game morning after everyone set in after a night of drinking.

If it has to be free, your best bet is not around campus.  Go down Main-Saline far enough there's some free, Stadium sidestreets (for EMU last year, I had to leave right after the game, so I drove, and found a spot right on the first sidestreet over the bridge past the Stadium.  But I was there pretty early). The neighborhoods are probably a better bet than around campus.

Parking and walking is great.  It is totally worth parking far away (miles, even) so you can walk through town and neighborhoods and meet all the fans, feel the atmosphere, see tailgating, smell the food, see beer cans getting thrown at rival fans, just soak it all in.

That said I have parked at AAA on Main St for ten years so I'm really not sure...

Usually you can find a spot on the other side of packard near Wells (N of Stadium) in the subdivision.

Also, you could just drive a motorcycle and park between cars that a parallel parked right next to Elbel like I do.

I don't remember how early my parents got there, but they parked for free in the business school garage.  I want to say they got there around 9 or 10am for a noon kickoff (it was the Purdue game).

A street called Pauline Blvd intersects with S Main at the NW corner of the stadium.  Take that west for about 1 mile and you will start to see open parking (as late as 30 min before the game starts). If all else fails, there is a church on the right hand side (while traveling west), turn right there and it breaks off into more residential houses and parking is wide open.

Sure enough.... .93 miles

Try the neighborhood north of campus (ann, catherine, lawrence, or kingsley.) This is a quiet neighborhood and the year I lived there I was able to frequently find parking. Not sure how much the parking rules have changed but there's also a parking lot right there at the nursing school which MAY be open for the public on weekends.

Most of the residential streets west on Stadium have ample free parking on gamedays. Pretty much every game I go to, I park somewhere between Greenview Drive and Westfield Ave.

Is it possible to park anywhere for free on game day?  I highly doubt it.

My dad and I always park in student housing yards off of Hill Street for $25.00.

When I've gone to games with friends, we usually park at one of the millions of spots on State Street for $10.00 and then walk down the railroad tracks that lead to Crisler.

All those street just behind State free parking on the Street. You have to get there early enough to get it, but not THAT early.

And how far are you willing to walk? Not much farther for free, but $10 for a couple of blocks isn't bad.

Seconded.  Burns park area is great to park for free.  I do it for all events, including Art Fair.

I used to live in that area and would always direct my out-of-town friends there.  However, after I graduated they installed new residential parking signs.  I'm pretty sure they apply for M-F, but be sure to look before you leave your car there.

Unless they changed it since last year it's M-F, but good point, there are lots of things like that that the city does.  Including "No parking M-F or football Saturdays". So be careful wherever you park.

But if you don't want to pay for parking and you're willing to walk you never have to.

I've parked at the mall before and walked.  It's not too bad and it is downhill on the way back.  Afterwards just pick up a bite to eat or stop at the Mden in the mall.

The problem with the Ann/Catherine/Thayer/Ingalls area is that there's a ton of student housing, which means street parking is typically already being used. And I thought they were designating that a resident-only parking area at some point?

Your best bet is a residential area that's not heavily into student-housing, and is far enough from the stadium to not have those "No parking football Saturdays" signs.

Many good suggestions above (below?) -- east of Packard, by Burns Park (Wells/Baldwin/Granger), west of 7th St/north of Stadium on the west side, Iroquois by Packard/Stadium, or a fave place of mine that does entail some walking -- by the old Argus building at 3rd St. and Washington.

If you arrive at 10 you'll find street parking at all of those locations. I'd base my decision on where I was going after the game, and which parking spot was closest to where I wanted to be/get to.

Closest reasonable spots to East Quad are likely in the Burns Park area, maybe on Olivia or Lincoln.

I usually park on one of the side streets or apartment complexes on Main, south of AnnArbor-Saline.  Yeah, it's about a mile and a half walk, but it's nice to get exercise before you're going to be crammed in for 3-4 hours.

EDIT: If you park at one of the complexes, make sure you park near the road, and try to be around a few other cars.  They don't like people using their parking as public domain.

Your best bet to find parking is to look near Burns Park east of Packard. It's a bit of a walk to get to the stadium, but not too bad. If you want to park as close as possible to East Quad then I'd suggest trying to park in the neighborhood near Oxford housing. There are usually some spots there if you get there early enough, and that isnt a horrible walk to East Quad or to the stadium

The problem with free parking is that it usually means you are parallel parking on the street.  Where do you set up your grill and chairs so you can eat and drink beer during the 5 1/2 hours before kickoff?

Go west on Scio Church off of AA-Saline, turn left into the neighborhoods, park on the street,  then walk through the woods (manicured cross country trails) and into the Pioneer lot from the back.  It's a beautiful walk as you crest the hill and see the stadium lying below.  And it's less that 10 minutes walk to get to the pay parking at Pioneer.  I've never had a problem parking there in the last 20 years.

You have given away the location of the secret free parking!!!!  Whenever anyone asks me where I park I tell them very generically (and usually incorrectly), so they do not find this gem.  Now the masses will overrun it, and i won't be able to park there every game.  If I am unable to park there, I will hunt you down, even if you are a pastor...

/sarcasm

It really is a great parking place, and i can arrive 20 minutes before kickoff, and still make it to my seats before the national anthem (of course my seats are in the SW corner, so that helps).

The Ann Street and Catherine Street parking garages are free on weekends (even football ones!).  They're right by the BSRB, Med. Sci II, Taubman Library, and Angelos which as an aside is a great place to enjoy breakfast before the game.

It's then about a 20-25 minute walk to the stadium.  You can also leave your car there overnight on a Friday (free at 6pm) or Saturday, depending on if you want to crash at someone's place in the city but they don't have parking.

Best place to park is on state street in the mall parking. If you don't wanna walk you can take the shuttle which costs 2.50 one way which isn't bad.
