Is this the best Michigan football recruiting class ever?

Submitted by ThadMattasagoblin on

I know we've had some good classes that are in the top 10 and top 5, but damn our class is stacked.

You shed a tear in the Dantonio household, better get ready for a week of eating liver and lima beans til you toughen up.

When you're busy recruiting nationally, no time for that sissy business.

Now you might think im about to cry here:

or here:

but i assure you

i was not shedding a tear.  And our players don't cry either when they get their hands punched by a lineman's face or their wrist twisted by a guy's facemask.  That's spartan football and if you don't like it, turn off your TV set.  We don't need your communist ass watching us play.  Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go reset our countdown clock.  Win versus that other school in the state next year and thats 10 straight years we won or lost by less than 3 plays.  Watch your boy Rich's football banquet and tell me who's crying.

by overall skill: absolutely not. I have to believe that in the grand history of michigan football we've had just ridiculous classes at some points.

The most highly-celebrated Michigan recruiting class I remember was the 1998 class, which had the following players:

  • Drew Henson, QB
  • David Terrell & Marquise Walker, WRs
  • Walter Cross & Justin Fargas, RBs
  • Bennie Joppru & Deitan Dubuc, TEs
  • Julius Curry & Cato June, Safeties
  • Todd Howard, CB
  • Victor Hobson, Evan Coleman & Larry Foote, LBs
  • Joe Denay & Dave Petruziello, OL
  • Dan Rumishek & Shawn Lazarus, DL
  • Dave Armstrong, FB

That's a pretty solid class, but it's only 18 players.  Out of those 18, I would say that Henson, Terrell, Waker, Cross, Fargas,* Joppru, Dubuc, Curry, June, Howard, Hobson, Foote, Petruziello, Rumishek, and Lazarus were all significant on-field contributors, so that is 15 out of 18 (83%).  Several of those players were legitimate stars.

The 2011 class looks like it will have 25 or more players in it, so it will be quite disappointing if at least 15 of those players do not make significant contributions, or if a few of them don't become star players.  If 83% of the 2011 class turn out to be significant contributors, then you are talking about 21+ players.  I imagine it has been a very long time since UM has signed a recruiting class in which 21+ players became major on-field contributors.

Nope. If we got payton, wright, thompson, garnett and 1 other 4/5 star then it would be pretty close, but still probably not the best.  As good as this class is it doesn't have an elite "skill" player. I think it would have needed Shane Morris in this years class along with another arguable #1 receiver/wr. With that said, his class does cover our needs very well.

You didn't lay out the criteria. Is it "best results during and after college" or "best job getting a highly touted class"? I'd argue that the first is obviously more valuable, but they might take the same amount of skill to close.

Hi Folks,

I don't have enough points to start my own thread. A blind couple at my church heard I like College Football and asked me if I could download the Michigan Fight Song for them. I don't have it, but would like to fulfill their request. Finding an mp3 copy has been harder than I thought. Would anyone mind helping me out? Reward involves good karma points from a Spartan.

THanks,

Jim

Theres two ways to judge it. 1. Based upon rankings and 2. After the fact evaulation. This class isnt even close in category one and obviously we have to wait several years to get an idea of the second criteria. This is a good class but I dont think comes close to most of the 90's classes, not to mention the old days when we could just take tons of players before the scholarship limits. I see this class finishing about 5-8 once the top level 5 stars shake out unless we just get tons of steals.

In 2002 we had the #1 ranked recruiting class according to ESPN with Woodley, Prescott Burgess, Shawn Crable, Leon Hall, Jake Long, and Clayton Richard..

Didn't turn out to be the best group of talent we've ever had, but it was the #1 ranked class.

A nice reminder to temper our expectations.

EDIT: Also a nice reminder that ESPN rankings are rediculous. Rivals had us at #17 for that class.

Wait until we have Denard's twin sons in 2040, with their sub 3.0 40-yard dashes and rocket (literally - we have surgery for that by 2040) arms.  THAT will be a recruiting class up there with the team of NBA "stars" used in Space Jam.

I've been following football recruiting since about 1986. I was a long-time subscriber to SuperPrep and Tom Lemming's newsletters.

Michigan's had the #1 class several times. Top five classes like this one? Lots and lots and lots of times.

Echoing the fact hat we won't know how good this class is until a handful of years form now but we need to add a stud RB and WR to round out this class on the offensive side of the ball. It certainly has all the potential...

The most important thing with this first real class for Hoke is filling it up with linemen on both sides of the ball. It's not as sexy as bringing in a bunch of skill guys but it paves the way for future dominance. Then the Shane Morris class the following year might be the one that gets you a bunch of hyped up skill players. Hoke is definitely going about things the right way, the key right now is finishing strong on the field. Win 9+ games and the recruiting momentum should only add to our already impressive recruiting class.

Obviously, we have to wait 5 years and see how all of these guys pan out, but from a pure Rivals/Scout numerical ranking I think the 1998 class would be the only one that could compare to 2012.
