Belmont Stakes: California Chrome for the Triple Crown

Submitted by HelloHeisman91 on

I don't know much about horse racing but I do know that the Triple Crown is a big deal and hasn't been done since '78 when Affirmed won with an 18 yr old jockey.  California Chrome is currently +125 on 5dimes vs the field and the race is set to go off at 6:50pm est.

the Triple Crown.  I don't know much about horse racing, but from what I've read, part of what makes winning this race so difficult is that it is a much longer track than the previous ones.  It's kind of like asking a sprinter to run a much longer race than usual.

Man, I hope he can pull this off. 36 years is too long. I thought the streak was over with Smarty Jones, but alas here we are. Definitely rooting for California Chrome.

Not sure if I'm late to discovery this but I just did some research and apparently California chrome is related to secretariat. I thought that was pretty cool.

But if I were to bet, I'd be going against the favorite and taking a horse that has shown the ability to make a late run from off the pace.  Commanding Curve, maybe?

Is anyone rooting against this?  I mean what a story - $10K horse by a bunch of outsiders.  Someone tried to buy the horse off them for $6M pre Kentucky Derby - they said no.  Lets do it!

You can decide to skip events in any individual sport.  Tennis, golf, etc.  The sport doesn't exist to cater to this one guy who happens to have a fast horse one year.  No one knew California Chrome would win the Preakness so to act like it was a big scheme to prevent the Triple Crown doesn't make any sense.

Well I did at least bet on tonalist. So there's that. But I'm very disappointed, I really want to see a triple crown winner.

Winning horse's owner's moment in the spotlight ruined by

1. a politician wanting the spotlight

2. A trophy too heavy to hold

3. Bob Costas asking a question he refuses to answer.

1.  Anyone else think horse racing is SOOO incredibly fixed?

2.  They make a huge deal about the triple crown, but I'm in the who the hell cares camp.  It's a totally made up contrived accomplishment.  In horse racing no less!

Think about if they hyped an analogous thing in dog racing or horse and buggy racing?  How ridiculous would that be?  Yeah about as ridiculous as the horse racing version too.
