If he does that, it means he

If he does that, it means he got injured or in massive trouble. There is almost no way they'd redshirt for any other reason...it just doesn't happen

I thought the rule was if you don't redshirt as a freshman, you can't redshirt down the line unless it's for medical reasons.

You can't redshirt a guy that spends an entire season

taking #2 reps.  Then you're replacing what would be wonderful depth with another true freshman.

Fantastic idea!!!

Redshirt the likely number 2 QB so that we can possibly burn Speight's redshirt.  Brilliant!!

You wouldn't be using Speight then

You'd be using Bellomy for mop up. Who'd be a redshirt Junior.

I don't think you quite thought this through.

You don't announce or necessarily decide on redshirts at the beginning of the season. Morris will play if he's needed. If he isn't, it makes sense to preserve a possible redshirt. At this point, nobody knows where Morris will be on the depth chart in 2014.

Why?

12 Devin Gardner QB 6-4 210 RS Jr. Detroit, MI
6 Brian Cleary QB 6-3 199 RS Fr. Detroit, MI
13 Alex Swieca QB 6-1 210 RS So. New York, NY
15 Shaun Austin QB 6-1 204 RS Fr. Plymouth, MI

There are more than 2 QBs on the roster. Give the walkons a chance to show something. Would be a thrill for them.

Plus as shown below, Gorgeous is high on Cleary.

Were you there last year?

They still tackled in the scrimmages. The only difference between a game and a scrimmage is the format and it has an actual game feel.

It's not like scrimmages are flag football.

Serious things should not

Serious things should not happen on April 1st. First I got sad, then I got suspicious, then I felt foolish, then reason kicked in and I got sad again. Should have just stayed sad. Getting sad twice sucks.

That man who figures out how

That man who figures out how to prevent this injury is going to make a lot of money.

I feel really bad for Bellomy, but it's hard to bring me down from this Final Four high.

As would the woman who figures it out.  However, she'd make only 2/3 of what the man would.

BOOM.  Gender inequality'd.

This author may disagree but

This author may disagree but she doesn't do so convincingly:

Merely stating other partial explanations for the pay gap does not automatically imply that discrimination is not a cause as well, that would be faulty logic.

The author pays lipservice to the idea that women are socialized into lower paying jobs but doesn't go on to consider the gendering of labor itself, or how some jobs (nursing and teaching as two examples) are culturally considered to be "women's work" and have been historically undercompensated.  This is not to mention the completely unpaid labor of child rearing and homemaking.  Men are increasingly contributing in these areas but the majority of this work is still done by women.

Finally, she doesn't mention at all the fact that women are found far less often than men in high level management roles and generally have less power in the workplace.

Things are definitely getting better for working women, but progress is not instantaneous and there is definitely a ways to go.

Actually the first point was completely on point

Discussing the need to protect ACLs in a thread about our player injuring his ACL.

Then it went off the rail when people took an innocent generic turn of phrase into a sexist crime setting back the women's movement to the 1950's. then there were some truly sexist remarks made, tongue-in-cheek, do to the overly serious nature taken.

Ummm...

Some of us don't have jobs that allow us to post a ton.  I usually only post when I can offer useful info on a topic, or when someone is posting something offensive.  Like the other poster said, you may just consider this a harmless joke, but it's not.  My wife volunteers for Safehouse here in A2.  You would not believe the things that happen to women here.  And this is an educated, low crime area!  Sorry if my response is strong, but you hit a nerve.  As a man, I'm tired of seeing other men make disparaging jokes about women.  So please don't.

And I usually do enjoy your posts.  Just becuase I don't post a lot, doesn't mean I don't check the site...obsessively.

You're right.  It's not a harmless joke.  With my post on a sports blog, I've just set the feminist movement back 60 years while simultaneously ensuring continued acts of domestice violence,  sexual crimes, and gender inequality in the workplace.  Damn it why don't I ever THINK before I post?

You would be surprised at what happens to men.

Men account for 80% of all homicides. Black men in particular are in danger.

Then of course there are the far too many children who are subjected to beatings, sexual assault, and homicide.

1. yes they do.

1.a. but you're not exactly creating a welcoming environment for them.

2. even if they didn't, perpetuating sexism among the  men that read sports blogs still wouldn't be okay.

>Also, I ask you to consider the fact that your username is awful and doesn't belong on a Michigan blog.

I was born at UofM hospital and have been a Michigan fan since I was old enough to stutter "Desmond, number 21".  I attend school at UNC Chapel Hill and was hoping for UNC to beat Kansas so that Michigan could wipe the court with them.  I am completely baffled as to what my username has to do with any of this.

I have been very respectful and polite in my disagreement with you and I'm disappointed that you've chosen to flame me in response.

From my experience, some

From my experience, some people on this blog comment way too much and take the self moderating responsibility way too seriously. They are like the pharisees and saducees that thought there was no way this Jesus could possibly have a relevant opinion. I went through it in the early days of posting. I was born at osu medical center, but have always loved Michigan, but I couldn't expect anyone here to understand what that's like and many have hated on my name at times even though we all refer to tsio as Ohio now. Fortunately for me, I was able to move to Dallas 2 years ago and am no longer in that hole that is Columbus, and have been to Cowboys Stadium 3 times now in the past year.

Perhaps some need to lighten up.

Female here who is actually more offended by the "women don't read sports blogs" than the original comment. I doubt the OP was that serious.

FWIW, I was more offended by that second comment as well.

But I think that just because the OP wasn't serious doesn't make it okay or harmless.  And just because you personally weren't offended [not all women would be, and some can be quite sexist themselves, right? not that you are] doesn't mean that no woman would be offended or would feel unwelcome here because of that kind of comment.

I appreciate your perspective and I just hope that you don't presume to speak for everyone.

But Carolina, you kinda

But Carolina, you kinda brought it on yourself.  You were the one who first went all 6-paragraphs-political in your refute of an article, which you followed up by bitching about being negged.  The discussion began with a couple quick little comments "might be a woman, but she'd get paid less" "well this person at Forbes doesn't think so" but you went full on rant.

There's really nothing wrong with your feminist rant, but this isn't the place for that stuff.  A good chunk of the people are going to disagree with you, and many of the ones who don't just don't want to hear it.

My one problem with your rant:  Nurses are really not undercompensated, on the whole.  They get good money, flexible schedules and better than average job security, in addition to outstanding workwear.  Most feel that nursing is a great profession, and if anything, men get the short end of the stick here because many feel they can't pursue this job because it's a "woman's job."

>but you went full on

>but you went full on rant.

No, I went full on "effectively and respectfully argued."  I have not flamed or ranted at anyone, I have stuck to the facts and politely asked posters to consider their own comments from the perspective of a female reader.  I was flamed in response for doing so yet I have still not responded by flaming.  Where's my cookie, eh? :P

I humbly ask you to consider whether you would have still characterized my post as a rant if it was not made in defense of feminism.  Again, this may seem harmless to you, but women are frequently accused of "ranting" or "bitching" when they bring any of this stuff up, no matter how polite or respectful they are being towards posters who were neither polite nor respectful in the first place.

>but this isn't the place for that stuff.  A good chunk of the people are going to disagree with you, and many of the ones who don't just don't want to hear it.

But it is the place for comments which are sexist in the first place?  Would you still feel the same way if it had been a racist comment instead of a sexist one?

I say too bad if someone didn't want to hear what I had to say.  Because, you know what?  I didn't particularly want to hear blatant sexism on a blog/board that I otherwise love.  I ask you to please explain what is wrong with politely confronting such content which is simply not acceptable in the modern world.

>men get the short end of the stick here because many feel they can't pursue this job because it's a "woman's job."

Here's a thought for you: what if patriarchy is harmful towards men in some ways while benefiting them in other ways?  My father for instance is completely incapable of expressing any kind of emotion or vulernerability because he was raised to think that would be 'unmanly'.  Without getting too personal, I will just state that this has been extremely detrimental to his ability to be a healthy and well-rounded person.

You raise a good point and I'm glad that you did because it encourages people to consider the r̶a̶d̶i̶c̶a̶l̶ not so radical perspective that patriarchy can harm men as well, but I don't think it changes the overall argument.  Substitute 'secretary' or 'executive assistant' if you prefer -- there are plenty examples of how "pink-collar" work is paid less than "blue-collar' or "white-collar" work.

If you're that sensitive

You're not going to make it long around here.

And if you really think that "the man who comes up with..." (Rather than person/human being/gender neutral connotation) = "the WHITE man who comes up with..." (Purposefully adding a modifier rather than going for simplicity) then I don't know what to tell you.

....what?

I wasn't referring to that post as sexist at all.  I was referring to the other post where GoY basically said "haha, no woman could invent that".

Which was a... blatantly sexist thing to say.

I don't get why you think I'm being 'sensitive'.  I haven't flamed anyone, I've been perfectly polite and reasonable.  If someone made a similarly racist comment, you would (rightfully) call them on it.  How is this any different?

I'm LOLing (like, the very sad kind of LOLing) that anyone who confronts sexism in a reasonable manner is "ranting", "bitching", or "just being too sensitive".  I hope I don't have to explain why I'm rolling my eyes at that.

If someone made a similarly racist comment, and someone freaked out like you did, they would get made fun of too. He was joking, because obviously many women are doctors and many have invented things.

Had he said "like a black man could ever be elected president" it would have been no different and anyone thinking he was being racist would get the same treatment you're getting.

Actually, it is.

Humor has no bounds. Only the requirement of funny. Now this board has a few taboos. But it strays on a safer side, and that's fair. But there's a marked difference between making fun of a class and making fun of a stereotype. It may be difficult by person to tell the difference; a sense of humor helps.

Is what people are finding funny.  Just because I think that you shouldn't laugh at other people's misforture/mistreatment doesn't make me a jerk.  And, laughing at racist/sexist jokes might just be wrong!

You said the original comment.

That was the original comment that people felt the need to correct him on (though I think the first one was a joke too) and that promoted his tongue-in-cheek response you object to because people were being too sensitive.

And no, if he made a comment in a similar vein he wouldn't be called on it. Him dropping a "white men can't jump" line in a baketball thread isn't going to get anyone up in arms. A multiple post lecture on how "the white man is an inferior athlete..." would.

You're being called sensitive because you can't stop overreacting and are projecting that people are saying you're "bitching" or ranting." When you start feeling offense that's not there, that's the definition of sensitive.

I think a more appropriate comparison would be "black men can't play quarterback".  You know, because black men, like women and unlike white men, are a historically oppressed group.

And people on this board would (rightfully) criticize anyone who made such a clueless, and yes, harmful comment.  In fact, I have seen such comments on this board before and they were negged to oblivion and people told the person making them to screw off in generally much more aggressive terms than anything I said.

If someone said that

If someone said that seriously then, yes, they'd be rightfully reprimanded. But every comment about women in this thread has been in jest.

If DG was coming off a huge game, and someone said, "but i thought black men can't play QB" then people would laugh and move on. Like you should have.

I don't think you would laugh at that kind of joke if you were a black highschool quarterback dreaming about one day playing for U of M.  I think the joke becomes a lot less funny when you consider it from that perspective, don't you?

Well, see, you're racist....

Because you don't think "white men can't jump" is just as bad as "black men can't play quarterback."*

But the more apt comparison would him making an innocent comment like "I can't wait till we have a QB like Tom Brady, Chad Henne, or John Wangler again," then someone saying "Or Denard Robinson, Gardner, or Michael Taylor" (making the obvious inference).

Then him saying that, making fun of the fact that someone took it completely out of context and was looking to offended.

(*except of course for the fact that the former is completely true, and the latter isn't).

I get what you're saying, and

I get what you're saying, and I even agree with some of it. But this is a sports blog, not a sociology forum (and I have a sociology degree, not that I've ever used it). No one likes sexism any more than racism, but if someone went on a rant (yes, it was) about why racism is bad and why one race is disadvantaged to another, it won't be received well here, especially if it was prompted by a comment that wasn't actually racist to begin with.

Sometimes you need to say you piece and be done with it. We know where you stand on this.

Now if you could go fix me some nachos, that'd be great.

Care to explain how that comment just isn't sexist to begin with?  Because it's pretty blatantly sexist.

My point is that it's very

My point is that it's very easy to make fun of dated stereotypes when you are not on the receiving end of them.  I politely asked GoY to think about how his joke might sound from the perspective of a woman [many of whom are still taught growing up that their looks are more valuable than their intelligence] and he responded by flaming me and the rest of you responded by negging me.  I get that he is an established poster here and I am new [though I have actually lurked for a few years now].  I still expected better from this board and from 2013.

I mean, come on, if Herm doesn't need to resort to sexist jokes, I don't see why anyone else on this board should have an excuse.  [har har, am I doing it right?]

"Established poster"

Ghost of Yost may be established, but he's become a bit of a whipping boy for his reactionary negativity (at times). No one is defending him because he's been around longer. If anything, his track record probably would hurt him in that way. The fact that people are voting for him in that way probably illustrates that he's not really in the wrong.

Interesting Tweet...

...and I am not sure how much of this road Borges explored because the QB in question did not see game action at all last year, I believe, but Angelique Chengelis did tweet this:

Borges has been very high on Cleary, as well, at QB. Re: Bellomy ACL

— angelique (@chengelis) April 1, 2013

Still, terrible news right now for QB depth all the same. Per the Rivals article, Russell and the coaches were aware of the perception that existed after Nebraska and were working very hard with Bellomy, so it's sad that this opportunity will be delayed after a good spring (per Hoke in the article). I wish Bellomy a speedy and full recovery.

This isn't the worst possible news.

Not like Bellomy was going to play this year unless we were up by 50, at home with 2 minutes on the clock.  Shane was always 2nd in line any ways.  They just hoped they were never going to play him.  Look for a walk on to handle mop up duties.  Shane will only be used if Gardiner is seriously hurt (pray that doesn't happen).

I do,

I think the coaches lost all confidence in Bellomy in Lincoln.  I still think Shane will be number 3 on the depth chart this year barring any serious injuries to Devin. If all goes well, he may still get that red shirt.

There is absolutely no evidence to suggest the coaches lost all confidence in Bellomy. Many of the fans, sure. But not the coaches. Give me one reason why you think that. Playing Gardner in his place doesn't count because DG is obviously awesome.

But "playing poorly in one game" and "coaches have lost all confidence" are not the same thing.

Also, "coaches have lost all confidence" and "coaches felt DG was the better option" is also not the same thing. Yes, we know DG is better. That does not mean the coaches have given up on Bellomy.

Yeah, he lost the backup job

Because he was the "backup" who goes in and takes a couple of snaps while Denard gets it together while Devin is playing at our thin wideout position because he's a good enough athlete to help.  Devin was the "if we need to replace anyone for any time but God we hope we don't have to" backup. Probably very much like Morris would be treated this year. He's not burning a redshirt to go in and hand off at the end of games, but if we needed someone to play the second half of the season, it could be him.  And it would be a disaster in any case.

I agree with almost all of

I agree with almost all of this, but I'm less sure that Shane was going to be the long term option over Bellomy if DG went out for a while. When you're playing a back up QB, you want a guy who will make good decisions, few mistakes and knows the play book well, because you don't want him to be both less skilled and predictable. Neither of those guys are going to be completing many throws downfield anyway.

DG was the obvious long term fix because he was both better and more experienced than Bellomy. I'm not sure Shane is either at this point, but certainly not the latter.

Thought i read an article that proved exactly the opposite of what folks are saying... that the coaches were down on him.

Borges:
"He's gained some confidence back," offensive coordinator Al Borges said Tuesday. "He probably lost a little bit -- who wouldn't, I guess. He's had a really good six days of spring football.

Ok well I guess I don't know what your definition of "lost confidence" is.  He was the back-up, and after an awful performance he was moved down the depth chart.  If your argument is that the coaches haven't lost confidence in his ability to make the team, then I agree.

Had the coaches lost

Had the coaches lost confidence in him as the guy in 2012? Sure. But in the comment I'm replying to above, the poster said the coaches have lost "all" confidence in him, which implied to me that this is their current feeling (otherwise his post makes no sense).

Did the coaches feel that he wasn't quite as ready in 2012 as they thought? Sure, but that doesn't mean they have absolutely no confidence in him moving forward. Young players do tend to improve from year to year.

Why?

What has Bellomy done up to this point? If Morris is the heir apparent to Gardner I would have expected him to be second string anyway. You play the guy who gives you the best chance to win. I'm not saying they would have burned his redshirt in garbage time but is Bellomy the guy you have confidence in to win a game in doubt?

First of all, you don't name

First of all, you don't name an heir apparent before they show up to campus, just because he was a big recruit. And although Bellomy looked bad in a game he clearly wasn't ready for, Shane looked just as bad in his Army All American game, and that was against high schoolers in a very low pressure environment.

Share has upside, for sure, but it's clear he's not ready. And he doesn't know the play book or have any chemistry with receivers. In 2013, the only advantage he'll have over Bellomy (knee ligaments excepted) is a huge arm, and that's not something of huge value in a back up QB.

Everyone loves the "but Bellomy looked so bad in that one game" defense, but when has Shane looked any better? And don't give me "he couldn't be any worse" because that's a cop out, and not true.

I hate to be that guy

But he couldn't have been any worse. I mean, do you remember that game? Bellomy was awful. 3-16, 3 interceptions, no points (except for a field goal to make it 10-9 Huskers when Denard had already driven the team to the 8 yard line). Absolutely atrocious. Out routes were sailing 10 feet over receivers heads. HOWEVA, I agree with what you're saying. As much as I think Shane will be a great player for this program, he won't be ready in the fall and it sounds like Bellomy had been improving a lot. Depth is always good and this sucks. The season really now hinges on Gardner staying upright (*knock on wood and do a little jig for good luck*)

I know the performance was

I know the performance was terrible, and I don't necessarily mean that Bellomy could have done much worse, because I agree there's not a whole lot of room for that.  I just mean that in terms of a player, it could be worse than Bellomy.  If he was that horrible, the coaches would have gone after a second QB in Shane's class, some MAC kid or something.

It seems that the most prevelent argument for why Shane would be the backup over Bellomy is that he couldn't be any worse, which I disgaree with (and it sounds like you might as well).

I'm hoping this Cleary kid can be serviceable as a backup, either until Bellomy is healthy (which I bet he is halfway through the season) or Shane picks everything up.  He has the size at 6'3" 200 and he's not your typical walk on in that he was recruiting by a handful of D1 schools out of high school.

5th Year

That was my first thought as well. Even a potential scrub just for depth and to allow for some possibility of redshirting Morris if Gardner stays healthy would have some value. Or to hedge against the disasterous possibility of Gardner/Morris being dinged simultaneously. Obviously you'd have to see attrition of 2+ before fall to put us at 84 and open up a schollie.

Maybe we can still avoid extinguishing Shane's redshirt, and that hopefully we can just deliver mop-up duty to our walk-on guys. And fergodsakes, PLEASE STAY HEALTHY DEVIN!

What if the kid knows or has accepted that he isn't going to be getting a phone call from the NFL any time soon? If Michigan has a program that he is looking for (odds are it's at least decently rated, right?) and he just wants to play and be part of a team for another year, you never know. There are many things worse that can happen to you professionally (networking, exposure, etc.) than to become a part of Michigan academically and athletically.

To elaborate on WolvinLA2's response a little...

all a redshirt means is that you take advantage of the NCAA allowing five years for four years of competition. If he plays (assuming nothing medical or "medical" happens) he'll have four years to play three seasons after 2013, then three for two after 2014, ect.

The only thing that matters is whether he plays or not. He could be listed as the starter all season, and it won't matter for redshirt purposes unless he takes the field.

Recruiting

Brady Hoke can't recruit players with strong knees. Bring Rich Rod back.

(Is that how it works? I'm still getting used to the inside jokes around here)

But on the serious side, this stinks.

New rule: Everybody has to wear knee braces from now on. Yes, even the coaches.

Just to clarify

Just to clarify as a lot of people were saying we would have to decide to burn Morris' redshirt now, that is not a decision that must be made now as I understand it.  Morris can theoretically back up Gardner all season as the number two QB in practice, but as long as Gardner never gets injured and Morris isn't forced to play we don't have to burn his RS.  It's not as if we have to decide if we RS him before the season starts.  The circumstances of the season will dictate that.  So, he can still potentially RS if he doesn't play even though he will be available if neccessary.  So, his RS isn't burned yet, only if Gardner gets hurt is his RS burned.
