Mike Patrick doin' his best Brent Musberger in the pre-game opening.
"This game is monumental for Duke" (vs Cincinnati in the Charlotte-based bowl).
a la Che Foster vs ND in 1994.
(Although I wouldn't be surprised if it's overturned as a knee down just short of the goal line.)
Duke up 8-0 after going straight down the field on the opening drive.
UPDATE: two-point conversion overturned during the commercial break.
Che Foster got a first down against ND but not a 2 point conversion.
I missed it. Did Duke try to run a blocked PAT in?
Taken in for a 2 point conversion.
Maybe this bowl season is just jinxed.
Just wait until April/June/July when there's no meaningful sports on/being played
Didn't get in.
Lord & Taylor-like store giving $500 gift cards to each player.
Which raises Q2. Why is that not an NCAA infraction? (Not that I care deeply, but it does seem inconsistent for the rule-bound NCAA.)
The NCAA allows gifts valued up to $500 for each player at bowl games, no cash though.
What's a Belk?
It's a department store chain, located mainly in the southeastern US, but not shockingly, headquartered not far from where this game is being played.
and it means "belch" or "vomit".
I kid you not. I thought at first it was probably a hoax put out by a disgruntled employee, but apparently not.
First of the new bowl names I approve of.
It's also close to old English for "bank" or "ridge", which no doubt is the origin of the name (for someone who lived on a riverbank).
5:00 to go in the first. At risk of becoming a blowout. I like competitive games.
UPDATE: Duke blocks kick for TD after Cincy three-and-out. Duke 16-0.
UCLA vs Baylor at 9:45PM EST.
after "Down Goes Byas"?
I thought Byas would be out for the game if the doctors were in charge.
Some moron, who shall remain nameless, put 33 confidence points on Cincinnati in our ESPN Bowl Mania group. What a pathetic loser.
What are the Duke helmet stickers? Looks like a person's head.
Defense only, Grim Reaper stickers.
Duke's linebacker with a concussion just went back in after one play. They must not have a very good Medical School.
Yeah I know. They consistently rank a couple spots above Michigan. Duke!
Definition: belk. n. The act of watching two teams play football when you'd much rather be watching them play basketball.
Indeed. I still remember when these teams played BB in 1998, it was a classic.
I'm watching The Lorax with small children, waiting for them to go to bed so I can watch the Holiday Bowl between Baylor and UCLA.
But I now know what a Belk is. At least Belk wins.
is the one-game interim head coach for Cincy.
Hope he finishes better. It's 16-3 now.
Performed the same role when Jones left Central Michigan in 2009. Eerily similar to the path taken by Buffalo HC Jeff Quinn who served as Brian Kelly's interim HC for bowls in 2006 at Central Michigan and 2009 at Cincinnati (both times replaced by none other than Butch Jones). Only difference being Quinn got the Buffalo gig in 2010.
On the official record both Central Michigan and Cincinnati's head coaching progression looks like this:
Brian Kelly (3 years) - Jeff Quinn (interim) - Butch Jones (3 years) - Steve Stripling (interim)
eɪ SEE SEE!
This is quite possibly my favorite bowl game sponsored by a discout retailer
My niece (Duke grad) just texted me a photo from the game. Looks cold in Charlotte.
After Duke fumbles at the Cincy goal line and later turns it over on downs in Cincy territory.
16-10 Duke. ~4-5 minutes left in first half.
HOLY SHIT THAT PUNT.
Cincy thinks it's going to get good field position with Duke punting from it's own 19. Instead, the Duke punt rolls down the sideline all the way to the Cincy 2 yard line. Booming kick with a great roll. 79 yards.
Best punt ever. It was like an invisible person kept batting it back in bounds, and then kept it out of the endzone.
Nice defense, Duke.
Cincy leads 17-16 w/ 42 seconds left in first half.
Kay. Abernathy. Six. That was a nice, nice throw and a great connection.
Despite the attempt at a block, the PAT gets through. This illustrates how fascinating football can be - Duke has the edge in virtually every major stat, and is losing by one because of one play.
EDIT: A successful 53-yard FG wiped out by an illegal substitution call on the Bearcats, and the resulting 48-yard FG is missed. A thing of beauty turned into something that was a foot wide of the goalpost.
Which one is Gorgeous?
Wow. Brutally unlucky end of the half for Duke.
Yea that should be allowed to be denied.
Why would a defensive penalty nix a FG like that?
Team A is the offense, team B is the defense.
b. Team B is allowed to briefly retain more than 11 players on the field to
anticipate the offensive formation, but it may not have more than 11 players
in its formation if the snap is imminent. Whether the snap is imminent or
has just occurred, the officials shall stop the action.
That last sentence is shaded, as is done for a new rule. I can't find a mention of the rule change anywhere but the requirement that the officials stop play in this situation cannot be more than two years old.
Note that the rule requires that all 12 players be in the team's formation. If the 12th man is just running on the field they don't whistle the play; if he's ready for action they do. I'm guessing this rule was put in for safety reasons, to avoid anyone ever running a play with 11 against 12, giving the defense an extra free hitter.
Found a page on a referees' site discussing this rule.
There are slight differences in the various interpretations here but it's pretty clear that if the defense is going to have twelve men active in the play the officials are instructed to shut it down for safety reasons.
after driving the six and a half hours from Chicago. Sitting in my girlfriends living room watching the game with her mom and dad (both UC employees) and opening Christmas presents. Glad it sounds like a good game.
Cool to see Brendon Kay one last time. He was quite the player for Marine City, leading them to a state title in '07 I believe. I was at the game and remember him flinging a 40-yder on a dead sprint roll-out for a completion.
Used to cross regularly using the ferry at Marine City back when there was only one bridge at Sarnia coupled with exceptionally long waits.
Lots of Michigan kids on Cincinnati. Starting QB, RB and RT are all from the mitten.
EDIT: In fact Parker Ehringer would have been a nice kid to take that year. He is a redshirt frosh who started all season at tackle for Cincinnati, and that would be nice to have next season after Lewan bails.
He's actually going to be there next year. He petitioned the NCAA for a 6th year due to injuries and got the waiver accepted last week.
Leave it to the ESPN shill, Mike Patrick, to say that Cincy hired a man "of great character," given what we know about the circumstances of his exit.
All year this team has easily covered the spread early but they biff if up late to screw me. Hoping tonight is different!
I'm laughing in disgust.
nope. Sorry man.
What the hell is belks?
Tommy Tuberville's sorry behind? Turn around and salute the Duke coach for not leaving. . . weak.
Duke answers Cincy's 27 point run w two TDs of their own to retake the lead 31-27
Jetski accident is the most Duke way ever to hurt oneself
I picked doook to win. So far I'm 7-2 in my picks.
Hits: Potato, Beef 'O' Brady's, Nawlins, MAACO Vegas, Hawaii, Pizza, Military
Misses: New Mexico, Poinsettia
I picked two big upsets: Ball St (Loser) and OHIO! Needless to say, I really need OHIO to beat LA-Monroe.
I'm 6-3 with losses from Ball St, Fresno St., and Western Kentucky. The Ball State one set me back big. The Fresno St I could live with. The WKU one hurt. Dumb coaching decision to go for that 4th and 1 by not drawing them offsides or just running the ball.
Only four (of 33) people picked Duke in my pool, so this won't affect me that much if they win. I think it lets one person jump me and one tie with me.
So that they have the ball last
34-31 Cincy 11 min left
DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOK ties it.
One more scheduled at-bat for each if they sustain long drives
Didnt that plane sink? How did they get it back? That's crazy.
Winn denied a 1st down. I suppose that if you haven't really done much, well, tackling or stopping of any kind, Duke can celebrate not letting someone get a first down. It's the small victories in these bowl games, right?
That being said, we are almost at 1,000 yards of offense between both teams in this game. Cincinnati is in danger of letting the Blue Devils punch in another one with that catch at the Bearcats' 8 yard-line.
EDIT: ....and Duke yet again loses it inside the 10. The end zone will not bite you and throw you in the basement.
DOOOOOOOOOOOKKKKKKK fumbles the ball at the goalline. Now it's up to their defense....
Duke still has a ton of time left.
For the TD
Cincy 41-34 42 seconds left
And i got cinci with a billion points. And yet i feel bad
I'm a few Christmas Ales in, but that color guy is pretty stupid.
and of course no one really plays defense anymore.
Jeez, bad penalty. It ain't over yet!
OK, it's over.
Well, that's an odd way to cover.
Duke really duked it there. Short mid-sack pass to a waiting defender. TD Bearcats. Game over now.
Shit. Saw that coming. Headed right for his blind side. Never had a chance.
Congrats Coach Stripling (Former DL coach at Michigan).
Duke is a betting man's nightmare? Amiright?!
It's unfortunate "redundant" is a negative moderation, in this instance.
At least we can watch Rutgers perform well on the big stage as they take on a hobbling VT in the Russell Athletic Bowl.
Dook first and goal at the Cincy 8 tied 34-all w ~1:30 to go. Cook fumbles, Cincy hits a tight end fly for a TD, then Dook gets to the Cincy 40 before a hit on the Dookie qb causes a popup to a lb who returns it for a TD.
while Duke is kicking ass in the 1st...and I come home and they lost. Man I'm feeling it right now
Thrilled that Cincinnati (one of my alma maters) won -- but wow, Duke gave them a much better game than I thought they would. Still, when you're down to a skeletal coaching staff, I bet it's rather difficult to properly oversee all facets of the game. It certainly showed here.
OK, now all I need is for Michigan State to lose, Michigan to win, and Notre Dame to be blown out, and that'll kick off my 2013 the right way.
How about that RB for Cincinnati (as previously mentioned, from Michigan)? That kid is a beast. He sees an opening and GOES. Zero hesitation. Gotta like that style.
