Beilien on Feinstein Show Yields Trivia
Beilien was on the Feinstein Show this morning and it was the usual interview, but after it was over a guy called up and told John that the movie Saving Private Ryan was based off of Beilien's extended family. I think it was his parent's cousins family. That seemed to come out of left field. Anybody hear that story before?
Also, does everyone know Charles Woodson was born with club feet? Heard that on a documentary about the Packers Super Bowl. Not sure if I ever heard that before but I don't remember that at all coming up. It was also pretty interesting that when he signed with Green Bay he said that was basically his only offer and he didn't want to play there. His attitude was shit and his carreer was going down the toilet. A blow up at practice with coaches lead to a turnaround that got him rededicated and lead to his defensive player of the year award.

Yes, it's Beilein's wife's side, they're famous in upstate New York.

...his mother's (Niland) side of the family. His uncle Tom Niland was a former coach at LeMoyne and was AD there when Beilein was hired. His uncle John Niland was the former coach at Canisius where Beilein coached after LeMoyne.
It's been said that the Niland brothers (not Tom or John, BTW) were inspiration for Saving Private Ryan, but it's more likely that they were one of several sets of brothers who had similar stories in various wars that were amalgamated in the screenplay.
Spielberg has said in interviews that it was based on more than one set of brothers but the Nilands are certainly the most direct connection because Stephen Ambrose was using them and other Tonawanda residents in his research for D-Day and its side project Band of Brothers, which was the original source material for Saving Private Ryan.
