Beilein responding to OSU pregame video

Submitted by PeteM on

I went to the Beilein show tonight and had to wonder if, since the awesome aneurysm moment he displayed in East Lansing, he's developed more of an edge. He was asked about the Ohio State video shown pregame at Value City, which I understand featured the Chris Webber TO, Evan Turner's half-court shot to beat us in the B10 tournament and a dunk to win a game back in the 70s.  It ended with the Pure Michigan logo.

In the past, I think Beilein would have simply chuckled and said that that stuff doesn't matter.  Tonight he said (I'm somewhat paraphrasing), with an edge in his voice, that "I hope we never do that kind of thing at Michigan and we won't as long as I'm here".

Anyway, while I don't really have a problem with players like Sherman trash talking I think it's classless when teams do it through their video feeds.  I'm also in favor of our PA announcers (Carl at football and Scott at hockey) continuing to essentially provide neutral(ish) commentary.

I'm curious if anyone else has thoughts about the contrast between the Michigan in-game experience and other schools'.

Even though I reinforce that ohio is NOT the top rival for Michigan in basketball, I have this picture on my wall.

Keep talking, assholes. Fact: Michigan has taken 3 of the last 5.

Also: Chris Webber got the last laugh in 1991-92 in the tournament and in 1992-93 with a season sweep.

Tom Crean and Victor Oladipo.  I wanted to put my fist through the TV when we gave up with a couple seconds to go and Oadipo sprinted the court and slammed it.  The officials waved it off, but that shows the lack of class (along with numerous other events) of Crean's program.

All trash talk (that doesn't cross the line of the kind of trash talk you'd give your friend) is good.

Regarding having the Webber timeout and the Pure Michigan logo on there, my biased eyes think those just aren't very good jabs. Cleverness earns points in trash talk, and lack thereof deserves to be mocked.

Those programs that tried to remove all the M's is a great example of trash that doesn't bother me but deserves ridicule because what's it making fun of--that they can ignore one of 26 letters of the alphabet? And double ridicule because their execution was terrible: they left an 'M' in the corner after all that.

As for an athletic department doing it, I think to stay classy you have to keep it on a school-to-school level. Ohio State making fun of Michigan: fine. Aaron Craft making fun of Michigan: fine. Students making fun of Stauskas: fine. Ohio State making fun of Stauskas: not fine, for the same reason it's not cool for parents of the other team to talk shit at kids in Little League.

I agree this is classless and shows a lack of sportsmanship. There is one thing I wish Michigan would stop doing during football games that I think is classless. That is when the other team doesn't get a first down on third down, and the students all yell, "You suck!"

band has been playing over it for the last 4+ years, you suck is still strong if not stronger as people try to yell over the band. students dont care if all these old ass alumni type think its not classy, its not as bad as wisco with their fuck you eat shit chants or the first down bitch chants at other schools.

people hate saying you suck after a 3rd down stop but everybody loved D-MO yelling get the fuck off my court a couple years ago.

When I visited happy valley this fall for the game all I noticed was their PA guy. He would scream and yell like a fan on third down and was talking as he ball was being snapped on the gibbons FG attempts. Very annoying.

My opinion is that student/fan-conducted things like the deport Stauskas and Justin Bieber as well as the "bum of the game" chants are funny and acceptable, but university-sponsored antics like writing Go Blue over East Lansing and that video last night are just kind of tacky.

Takes a lot of chutzpah to mock something that happened in an NCAA title game since Michigan has been there six times in a span where OSU has only been once.

Hey, I'm not above trolling their beatdowns at the hands of the SEC in two straight NC football games, even though we were sitting home.

The best part is that it instantly shuts them up.  They don't troll their #1 versus #2 victory over us in 2006 as hard as you would think because they then proceeded to go out and get their asses kicked in the NC game (as did we in the Rose Bowl against USC).  So much for #1 versus #2.

It depends on what you consider unsportsmanlike. Hockey has been "unsportsmanlike" for decades in what they say. It's just the way it is. Michigan isn't immune to it and I'm sure the opposition doesn't really care unless somebody calls them the n word or a f****t.

the Michigan difference, or arrogance if you will.  Staying clean, or above the fray and allowing our reputation and play do the talking.  Knowing we are doing things the right way still means something.

Pryor walk down a dark tunnel, headlights turn on, a man walks up says good game tosses some keys. It's a 350z, cut scene to Michigan athletes in class.....engine revs and its a buckeye getting a tattoo. Glad JB is classy, I'm sure RRod would've countered.

Ok, Question, CWebb was 91-92 correct? So, does any of our current players really get upset about that T.O? Do any of them even remember that game? Were any of them even alive? Don't think the players even gave two squirts, just have to keep winning and let them sing their gay ass songs and mock a year that they watched from their couches.

I have no problem with this.  It's what makes a rivalry fun.

They are obsessed with us.  We mean a lot to them, more than is healthy.  They actually honor us when they go to all the trouble to come up with this stuff about us.  They're not doing it for Purdue.

I thought it was hilarious when Michigan State came up with their "YOU OFF" shirts for the Izzone last year in response to our "WE ON" warmup shirts.  That's good trolling.  It also shows they play close attention to our every move.  (I could not tell you what MSU wears for warmups if my life depended on it.)  I was kind of disappointed not to see "WE WORKED YOU" shirts this year up there.

I don't know why people are surprised that Ohio would do this.  They are insecure in spite of their success, and maybe that has to do with their athletic history being marred by scandal.  It is a program rife with cheating.  I cringed when Dakich said that Jim O'Brien was a "great" coach.  He was a cheater.  They celebrate Tressel in Ohio and his whole career is tainted with a blatant disregard of the rules disguised by his religious front.  At Michigan, right or wrong, the people who cheated are disconnected from the university.  At Ohio, they are worshipped.  As long as you beat Michigan it doesn't matter how sleazy you are.  I think that mentality is pervasive in East Lansing as well.  As much as the fellow Michigan fans I know dislike our rivals, I think as a fanbase we do a pretty good job of celebrating the big picture.  As always there are exceptions.
