Beilein rants about ESPN start time

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

I love this guy. We all do. Who doesn't? How can you not?

John Beilein just ranted about ESPN airing the game even later than 10 p.m. Spike Albrecht has a nine a.m. class tomorrow.

@BFQuinn: Beilein blasting ESPN for tonight's tip time being moved 10 minutes.” Haha Classic Beilein. Gotta love him!!

Beilein's remarks on ESPN delayed start time weren't a response to a question; he just went freestyle.

of "student athletes" is ridiculous.  There is nothing normal about their college experience.

Michigan flew out to New York on Sunday, noon.  They guys have already missed two days of classes.

Don't know why you're putting quotation marks around "student athletes."  Every student at a major university has a different path.  The "normal" college experience is diferse and varied.  College education is not limited to getting a 3.2 in academic classes.  Student athletes are gaining valuable career preparation - just different from the math major whose career prep is different than a doctor's, different that a music major's, different than an artist's, different than an engineer's, etc.

Who ever decided that athletics is less worthy than music?

Sorry to swim against the tide here, but it's just 15 minutes.  The more legitimate gripe is the 10 p.m. NYC time start to the game.  Anything after that was incremental.  If 10:15 p.m. is ridiculous, then 10 p.m. is ridiculous.  So bitch about the scheduled start time first, then mention that the 15 minutes is just piling on.

I love Beilein, but this comes in at about 1,254 (+/- 3) on my list of reasons why.

[Edit - I see from WD's follow-up comment that Beilein did reference that 10 p.m. is ridiculous in and of itself.  So let's move this up to the 948th reason I love Beilein as a coach.]

I'm sure there's some contract with the MAC, but this was one of the better match-ups of the season thus far and surely one of the best games of the year to this point. Why put that on at 10? That should've been 7 pm, ESPN game of the night. A lot of people would've watched (and would've loved) that game. Don't even tell me Ohio-Miami had 25% the viewership that our 10 PM game had

and dictated by TV, with no consideration whatsoever for the players.

Back before electricity, the schedule was Thursday night, Saturday afternoon. An occasional Sunday afternoon for a special game for TV. During the Big 10 season, it was generally two games on the road the same week, pairing opponents by proximity -  (eg @ Indiana Thursday, @ Purdue Saturday)

All a player had to do was have no classes after Thursday morning, and the travel schedule had no impact on being able to attend.

I have no idea how players today are able or expected to actually attend classes when they could be playing anywhere in the country on any day of the week, at any time of day or night or early in the morning.

It is absurd.

Now get off my lawn.

2011 Michigan fans have their hands raised. Snark aside, I hope we all remember the "Fire Beilein" crowd. Probably the same people who are all "spread offense won't work in the Big Ten."

forgotten in all of this is student managers. My cousin quit a few years back from january to march because of the times. He was having to let opposing teams do walk throughs at midnight before a final exam. Something should be done.

Some guys are saying 15 minutes is no big deal.  Tell that to the UM athletes who were penalized by NCAA-hypocrites when the football team failed to include the 15 minute warm-up period within the total daily practice time allowed, not to mention all of the other affects it had on the university.

So, the NCAA had grave concerns about student athlete welfae when it comes to 15 minute practice overages, but it's OK for ESPN to push an already late tip-off back 15 minutes? Where's the outrage?  The NCAA needs to stop with the student-athlete charade as it chases dollars with its ESPN partner at the expense of the student-athlete.

And the NCAA is miffed why people think they're a joke??? Check the mirror.

Im sure the people at ESPN are pretty smart, they probably could of found a way to accommodate everyone. As we all know ESPN is about making money, this was just another payday of clustered scheduling.
