Beer Drinkers in AA Have Reason to Celebrate: Beer Grotto and HopCat Opening in AA

Submitted by UMgradMSUdad on

Within the next six months or so, two bar/restaurants with plenty of craft beer options are opening in Ann Arbor.  The Beer Grotto, which will specialize in craft beer and local wine is set to open in the fall, and Grand Rapids based HopCat is planning to open in January.

I went to school in AA and I live in GR, and I've gotta say that I prefer Hopcat to Ashley's. Hopefully they can capture the atmosphere and bring it to AA. I wonder if they'll be brewing as well. The GR location makes its own beer as well as serving other stuff.

Loaded Crack Fries...

Seriously though, this is pretty awesome news. Ashley's has always been my go to but having a HopCat is just awesome. Cool to see they've expanded to East Lansing, Detroit and now AA.

If you can't wait for the new places and want to try something other than Ashley's or Jolly Pumpkin or Bill's Beer Garden or Blue Tractor or Grizzley Peak or Old German or Fraser's check out World of Beer. They have a huge selection. Damn, Ann Arbor is a great beer town!

Being a huge beer snob myself, I always find myself at Ashley's. Their rotating board is usually oustanding, and they always have something "special" on tap. Additonally, they put on events that regularly feature some of the rarest beer around.

However, the service and overall attitude of the staff is HORRIBLE. I really cannot stand that aspect of the place. Outside of 1 or 2 bartenders, they are pretty much all douchebags. If it weren't for the beer selection, I'd never go.

That being said, I am pumped as hell for the opening of the HopCat. They did a really nice job at the East Lansing location, too.

They are also opening one in Midtown Detroit - should be open for the Tigers playoff run. Just an FYI for us East Siders who usually only make it to A2 for dinner sometimes and sports.
