Beaver: Hackett taking a run at Harbaugh through the 49ers

Submitted by DISCUSS Man on

longtime user Paly33 posted this in the thread below this one.

Don't want to start a new thread for this but over on Scout board, (GBW writer Tom) Beaver claims that one of his sources has a friend close to SF situation that Hackett will be making a major move for JH "through the 49ers". It would be bigger than what we would've thought was possible.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN

Hot damn you guys.

If we can pull this off it would be one of the biggest coaching changes in sports history. A college football team outbidding NFL teams for one of the best coaches in football? That is commitment to excellence we are looking for.

would turn us from CFB laughing stock to "Oh, now that's the motherfucking MICHIGAN I remember" immediately. It would show that Michigan is still a major player in football on all levels. School? Pumped. Fans? Fuuuuu yes! Recruits? Lining up. Rivals? On Notice, "What's ur deal?" on the way There is a homerun hire and a grand slam hire regarding Harbaugh. Outbidding the NFL while landing Jim is Grand Slam material.

I got all crazy earlier this afternoon because there was a "Harbaugh press conference - coming up next" side banner on ESPN for like 45 minutes. Nothing ever materialized, though. I thought maybe, just maybe......

Makes sense when you take into account what Hackett said about his swimming lanes.  Negotiating with the niners first makes Harbaugh available today even though he may still be coaching until late Dec.  If he is candidate #1, then you get your answer quickly and can move on before losing other candidates.  If he says yes, then BANG we got Jimmy.    We know that waiting until after the bowl game (a la Brandon) can result in Hoke-like candidates only being available.

If true, niners get certainty Jim won't ever coach against them (this is probably valuable given that Oakland REALLY wants him and is in their market and would be a NO NO for the niners) and possibly the buyout plus cash (which they could use to acquire a more suitable coaching candidate).  While unconventional, makes sense from the niners/wolverines side.

Only stone left unturned, is will Jim's family be content leaving the bay area.  Perhaps, Jim H. suggested it as a way to tell his wife, "I've got no other choice", so that he can take his dream job.

Strike fast, Hackett!!!

None of these other talks are even happening if Harbaugh isn't on board.  Hackett doesn't bother dealing with the 9ers (if that's what's really happening) if JH hasn't already said that he wants to coach at Michigan.  If he's not on board, no amount of financial inter-workings are going to do any good.  Hackett likely got Harbaugh's blessing first, and then went to the 49ers.

God damn, I hope this is all true.

Wasn't wearing his patented SF cap and was just not in the room. He wasn't in SF. He wasn't on the planet. Regardless of us the guy is not the most approachable in pressers but I've never seen him like that. He just stared into space, had a DGAF attitude while repeating the same line over and over. I can't express how much I want him here and happy to be here lol. I'm still skeptical but man.....

This doesn't make sense at all. Coaches have agents.

Any serious contact would be made by Michigan's headhunters to Harbaugh's agent. Further, it makes no sense at all to involve the very people Harbaugh doesn't like in any negotiations that might take place.

It's in Hackett's interests to communicate to Michigan fans that he's being bold, creative, and aggressive in pursuing Harbaugh, even if he thinks there's no chance that Harbaugh comes. I'll be excited if we hear indications that Harbaugh wants the job. Anything about Michigan targeting Harbaugh tells us little.

Maybe Hackett has been told by Jim that he wants the job. From there Hackett now is calling SF to negotiate a way out for jim. Maybe michigan offering to pay his salary or something....am I far off?

i don't get.  It's your alma mater and a place and people (mostly) you hold in respect.  Just say "I am not interested in the Michigan coaching job, but I wish them all the luck in their search and will help them in any way I can to find the right individual who has all of the qualities that Michigan deserves in its football coach."  I suspect he understand our timeline/swimlanes so if it's not to be, why not make it clear so Hackett can move on.

Isn't Hackett's pitch simply, "We will give you anything. Name your price and demands"? The ball is completely in Jim's court.
