Beaver: Hackett taking a run at Harbaugh through the 49ers

Submitted by DISCUSS Man on

longtime user Paly33 posted this in the thread below this one.

Don't want to start a new thread for this but over on Scout board, (GBW writer Tom) Beaver claims that one of his sources has a friend close to SF situation that Hackett will be making a major move for JH "through the 49ers". It would be bigger than what we would've thought was possible.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN

People protested to get Brandon out why are people not taking to the street to tell Harbaugh to come home?

Send baskets, write letters, have a YouTube/Facebook viral video show Jim how loved he is and how everyone wants him to come home....No man is more important than the team, no coach is more important than the team. The team, the team, the team!

This is the Michigan Wolverines not the Michigan Harbaugh's.

That has always been the problem with Jim it's all about him and as we all know.... No man is more important than the team, no coach is more important than the team. The team, the team, the team!

That's good I want Harbaugh too but I fear what we will get. If Harbaugh comes he is more important then the team. He is the face. It's no longer Michigan it's Jim Harbaugh. Just like Saban.

I guess it doesn't matter as long as we win.

I think this is a really irrational "fear." The guy is an excellent coach, and one of his role models and mentors was athe guy who coined "The team, the team, the team."  Jim didn't make the 49ers about him, he won't make Michigan about him.  And while Saban is the face of Alabama football, that's not a position he thrust upon himself, nor is it one I think he'd agree with.  He's just a damn fine coach.

I wonder if it's a trade. I wonder what the ramifications for either league would be in that case. I wonder if this might unravel the entirety of the NCAA's "student-athlete" privelege and officially make college sports another professional league. I wonder if this new professional league will compete with the NFL or create a farm system so drafted players can remain in school. I wonder if by doing this it will stabilize the economy while pumping NFL-like dollars into more research. I wonder if the result of all that research at the top universities will discover a cure for cancer and clean, renewable energy sources, and reverse the effects of global warming, both only after Michigan's climate is basically SEC country.

I wonder if Harbaugh will be able to recruit better than Ohio State once Ohio State is a swampy wasteland filled with retired people.

I wonder what's for dinner.

I understand that we'd be willing to pay the rest of his salary.

But that still doesn't mean Harbaugh would come to Michigan.

If the 49ers fire Harbaugh...he can obviously go anywhere. What's to stop him from just going to another NFL team?

I could see why the 49ers might want this deal (so they don't have to pay Harbaugh), I obviously see why Michigan would want this deal.

But we're missing the most important piece and that's Jim Harbaugh himself.

What am I missing?

What I am trying to figure out is whether or not a pro team is obliged to pay a coach if he's employed at college (as opposed to another pro team). I know, as users have stated below, that the Niners are off the hook for the final year of the contract if he goes elsewhere but I doubt these kind of rules are enforceable outside of the NFL, though I don't know.

Does anyone else know what the rules are? When Holtz was signed away from the NFL team in the 70's did the Jets still have to pay his remaining contract?

Baby Bull-- Look at all those cows dad. Let's run down and fuck one.

Dad Bull-- No son, let's walk down and fuck them all.

Don't take a run...walk and carry a shit load of money. Ok, it's a stretch.

Falcons never granted permission to Arkansas directly.  However the deal got done with help from 3rd party influence.

Excerpt from the chain of events:

"(Jerry) Jones, a former Arkansas football player, first phoned Blank last Thursday afternoon and told the Falcons owner he had gotten a call from the chairman of the board at Arkansas. The school wanted permission to speak to Petrino, Blank said. "I almost dropped the phone," Blank said.
"From my perspective, the answer is no," Blank said he told Jones. But Blank told Jones to call Rich McKay, the Falcons' president and general manager, for a formal answer.
On Friday, Petrino called Blank to tell him he was thinking of returning to college coaching. That same day, McKay talked to Jones. "I told him I was not inclined to grant permission," McKay said.
That didn't stop Petrino's agent, Russ Campbell of Birmingham. Campbell told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution on Wednesday there were discussions as early as three weeks ago. Campbell insisted he first told Blank and McKay of Petrino's unhappiness three weeks ago and that going back to college coaching was a possibility. "Arthur told me that if any time Bobby was no longer comfortable, all he had to do was come to him and he would let him go back to college football," Campbell said.
That is when Campbell said he first called Arkansas about Petrino's availability. Arkansas wasn't interested until late last week, when Jim Grobe of Wake Forest turned down the job, Campbell said. "The conversations took place over a series of days, but as it is with any talks, there is an ebb and flow," Campbell said.
On Sunday afternoon, McKay said, he talked to Jones, the Cowboys owner, again. McKay again said he was not inclined to grant permission for the school to talk to Petrino. Jones asked for a final answer so "he could get back to the people at Arkansas," McKay said.
Later that day, Petrino and McKay met with Blank at the owner's home. Petrino laid out his concerns as Blank took notes on a legal pad. Blank repeatedly refused on Wednesday to say what Petrino wanted, but was adamant the issues were not insurmountable. All Blank would say was that Petrino was concerned about the differences between coaching in college and the NFL.
The Sunday meeting did not resolve Petrino's issues. The three men would meet again Monday afternoon.
On Monday morning, according to Arkansas' out-going athletics director, Frank Broyles, there was more conversation about Petrino coming to the school. Added Campbell, Petrino's agent: "Things began to come to a head on Monday."
Broyles, who was in Atlanta on Wednesday on unrelated business, told the Journal-Constitution about Jones' contact with Blank.
"What I have heard is that [Jones and Blank] are good friends," Broyles said. "I was told Jerry got permission from Arthur Blank. Jerry talked to Arthur to get an interview. What happened after that, I don't know."
Blank and McKay both said Wednesday they never granted that permission.
Broyles said he did not have direct knowledge of the negotiations.
McKay said Wednesday that Jones' actions did not violate NFL tampering rules because Jones did not represent himself as an NFL owner."

They owe the University of Michigan a huge favor for Walt Downing, Bubba Paris and Dwight Hicks, not to mention owing the entire world of television viewers a massive apology for unleashing Randy Cross on us all as a "football analyst". Good God.

They have a former HC (Eric Mangini) on the roster and other satisfactory fill-ins candidates for an interim basis.  That's the only reason why I could see them reaching out to SF now.

I would imagine that former teammates, other past (and perhaps current) Wolverines and coaches, are reaching out by whatever means they can to lobby Jim to come back to Michigan and be a worthy successor to the coaching legacy of Bo, Fritz and Fielding. If anyone can appeal to him emotionally, and overcome the whole "no one (who's good) leaves the NFL" line of b.s., they can. I note that with the exception of Jamie Morris, I haven't heard much from former players on this issue. To the extent that anyone really knows what he's thinking right now, I'll bet they do. Since we haven't heard anything publicly, my money is on: He's coming and the deal, while probably not signed, is already agreed in principle.

OSU Scout Insider Nevadabuck is claiming that Harbaugh's agent, an old HS classmate of Nevadabuck's, has already told Michigan to move on.

Look, all of this speculation is based on an obvious desire on the part of Michigan to take Harbaugh. There is so much spoke there that it is likely true that Michigan has Harbaugh as priority #1.

But, what information do we have that Harbaugh is even remotely interested in coming back to coach college, even for Michigan??
