Beaver: Hackett taking a run at Harbaugh through the 49ers

Submitted by DISCUSS Man on

Don't want to start a new thread for this but over on Scout board, (GBW writer Tom) Beaver claims that one of his sources has a friend close to SF situation that Hackett will be making a major move for JH "through the 49ers". It would be bigger than what we would've thought was possible.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN

Do you think it's a guarantee that Harbaugh will agree to a trade with another NFL team?  I think it's at least possible that he would refuse all trades to ensure the 49ers can't extract any value from getting him.  That would force the 49ers to to either fire him or allow him to coach next year, and firing him leaves them on the hook for the final year of his contract. So that's 5 million reasons to negotiate with Michigan right there.

I could also see Harbaugh's Michigan contract written such that a buyout would be prohibitively high for specific NFL teams the 49ers wouldn't want him to see him join.  Maybe guarantees that certain coaches wouldn't be poached if they're worried that some of Harbaugh's assistants are so loyal they would follow him to Michigan.

Nothing in return? Don't they get some security that Jim will carry through any playoffs? Don't they get cash from Michigan? To them Harbaugh can be very difficult after this season. Forget the idea of any stupid trade. Whoever trades for him will demand Jim to sign an extension and Jim has all the leverage.

My guess is if the 49ers get to the playoffs, some other coach in the organization might finish up. Then again maybe he coaches thru the playoffs, wins the Super Bowl and tells the 49ers GM to kiss his ass and heads out to Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Honestly I think trade rumors and media circus around that would jeopardize their ability to get into the playoffs and make a run even moreso than if it were a done deal. Morale seems low in the front office and if all parties are aware, the team can best focus on getting their job done regardless of who their coach is next season. The players are still hungry for a championship and they know that even if Harbaugh won't be their coach next season, they still have a chance to win a Super Bowl before he's gone.

But then we'd both have to wait for four weeks and potentially contend with other NFL teams. I'm speculating here, but prior to the end of the season we might be the only ones who would be allowed to work out a deal with the 49ers.

And most importantly we'd get an answer quickly.  Either Jim wants to come to Michigan or he doesn't, and assuming we're offering him the moon the only excuse he'd really have for dithering would be if he still wants to stay in the NFL.

You put a ridiculous contract in front of him that he has the 49ers permission to sign and ask for a yes or no.  If the answer is no or not yet you move on.

The trade idea is a long shot for SF to pull off. Good face saving move for SF IF Harbaugh "goes home" rather than take another NFL job and come back and embarrass SF by kicking their ass. Money matters but for an NFL team 5,10, 20 million is nothing. Face is more important. Harbaugh to Michigan is a great result for SF. They won't over negotiate

I assume this is sarcasm?  There can be no tampering because Ross /= Michigan (despite his donor status).  The NFL could not touch Ross for that unless there is some NFL ownership regulations of which I am not aware.

That's all crazy talk anyway.  I could see the possibility that Michigan asks for permission (or is willing to pay for permission) to talk with Harbaugh.  Everything else seems bizarre.

Not really. Ross is a big influence and donor for Michigan. The fact that he's an owner of a NFL franchise would bring conflict of interest. Other NFL teams can push for it just in case the Dolphins are looking to replace Philbin whether if it's true or not or block other NFL teams from hiring him.

I am not familiar with JH's contract but normally even if JH were fired, his compensation would be reduced (or in this case eliminated) to the extent that he gets another job and earns money.  Assuming his Michigan comp would be greater than his 49ers contract, there would be no cost to the 49ers (again, assuming he has a standard type of buyout).

That's only if he is fired for reasons other than collusion, though.  If he were caught speaking to Michigan without permission, the 49ers may have grounds to terminate the contract without paying him another dime, so long as that violates the terms of the contract.  I could also be wrong about all of that.

I wonder if it just means that Hackett is asking for permission to speak to Harbaugh? That seems more likely than other possibilities. If true, it's a good sign because Hackett is going for it and if SF is onboard it may allow Harbaugh to make it public before the season end. Please be true!!
