Bears - Lions Thread
In the second quarter, the Bears are up 6-3. As a Bears fan, I sort of hope the entire coaching staff is wiped out by a nasty combination of cholera and dysentery. Yes, the GM too.
Gripings about the awfulness of both teams go here. I hope another dude runs out on to the field.

This game is so bad. Lions now up 10-6 with about three minutes left in the first half.
Does anyone else think the new Lions logo in the endzone looks a bit like the new Toronto Bluejays logo?

are also Bears fans. They live a block or two away from Soldier Field. Earlier in the season, my cousin's facebook status was: "Now I know what it's like to be a Lions fan..." to which I replied: Yes, because your team hasn't been to the playoffs consistently this decade to say nothing of the fact that you've made it to the Super Bowl. Yeah. You know how it feels to be a Lions fan. No other fan base in the NFL save perhaps the Browns's, knows how it feels to be a Lions fan. They have two great options in the draft between Suh and Eric Berry but it will be at least another two years to see real progress and a legitimate playoff run.

While I agree the Lions have a stranglehold on futility the last few years, I think most Bears fans are frustrated by the fact that Lovie is almost definitely coming back next year. And three straight years of missing the playoffs after that Super Bowl appearance goes a long way towards making you question your coach.

I understand the frustration with Lovie Smith. The owners are reputedly frugal, perhaps to a fault. I think the Bears should be much, much better than this. No one likes a bunch of underachievers ...

Yep, you are correct on the frugality. It is as if they've gone all Blackhawks from 1992-2007 on us. Combine that with terrible coaching (hey, let's fire our awesome defensive coordinator!) and underachievement is exactly what you get.

the logos faintly resemble one another.

With the rams currently ahead, come on Bears!!!
January 3rd, 2010 at 2:50 PM ^
and a Rams win give Detroit the first pick?
January 3rd, 2010 at 3:21 PM ^
Depends on the strengths of schedule.
January 3rd, 2010 at 3:27 PM ^
The Rams beat the Lions head to head, so if they tie at 2 wins they draft after the Lions.
January 3rd, 2010 at 3:32 PM ^
head to head counts for playoff position but not for draft position. For draft position SOS is the tiebreaker.
I think PFT covered this a while back.

20-10 now Bears. The commentators sound really bored with this game. I am too. But every time I watch the fins, Henne takes a sack.

It would be really nice if they could comeback and give the Lions the number one pick. But with Null at qb I'm not gonna hold my breath.

As a Vikings fan living in Chicago, I'm stuck watching the (stink) Bears (no offense Bears fans) and the stupid Packers. I can understand broadcasting the Bears' games but why can't the double header broadcast be something interesting and/or playoff pertinent (like the Eagles/Cowboys)?
Today we got the Steelers/Dolphins (which is fine considering the former UM players there), Bears/Lions (understandable) and the Packers/Cardinals (WTF). Granted there are a lot of Packers fans in the area but Green Bay is four hours north of here. That game has less playoff implications than the Eagles/Cowboys. So, why are we stuck watching mediocre games?
TIA
BTW - the Giants beatdown continues, 41-0 with the Vikes in the red zone once again. Brett is on the bench with Jackson playing QB.

But he's a gritty gunslinger that is just having fun out there!

You know the really frustrating thing? The Lions suck so bad that their own suckitude is what's going to prevent them from being joined in the ranks of history by the Rams. They HAD to go ahead and be St. Louis's only win. The Lions are the suckiest bunch of sucks that ever sucked. There are a lot of really good defensive players to choose from at the top of the draft and I keep having nightmares that Mayhew is gonna decide what the team needs most is a complement to Calvin Johnson.
January 3rd, 2010 at 3:46 PM ^
The Lions need just about everything. When they pick, they should take the best player available every time.
January 3rd, 2010 at 4:13 PM ^
The offense is mediocre-to-crappy, but there aren't words in the dictionary for how bad the suck-ass shithole sucky pile of incompetent turds the defense is. The defensive line is a collection of worthless space-wasters who can't find their way to the quarterback with a road map, and the cornerbacks are even worse. The secondary couldn't cover anyone if they were allowed two extra cornerbacks per receiver.
I wouldn't complain if Mayhew spent all seven rounds drafting defense and defense only. The offense is not good but the defense is the worst defense in the history of the NFL and would be the worst defense in the history of pee-wee football if they weren't above the age limit. Maybe if Mayhew wants to draft a new center somewhere to replace the practice-squad wannabe masquerading as our current starting center, that would be cool too.
I would also be happy to bring back Larry Tharpe, whom I fondly remember as the Human False-Start Penalty, to replace Cherilus. This way we can save at least five yards on Cherilus's incessant holding penalties. But that can be taken care of in free agency.

could they do it?
January 3rd, 2010 at 3:37 PM ^
stopped on 3rd and 1 - Rams end up kicking the field goal. Down 7-6.
January 3rd, 2010 at 3:47 PM ^
14-6
looking like the Rams will have the number one pick.
January 3rd, 2010 at 3:49 PM ^
that should all but secure them a loss.

I'm a Bears fan as well, have been since the Walter Payton days. I can't say I really dislike Lovie, but I am very disappointed in him. With that said I don't entirely blame him as the franchise as a whole has been exceptionally frugal since the McCaskey's took charge. This team has more needs than money and the money won't be forthcoming either. So it looks like the Bears will fade back to what they were in the 90's while we fans can only grumble.
