BCS Games on ESPN

Submitted by sebastokrator on

Can someone tell me why all the BCS games are on ESPN this year? I know that ABC won the rights to broadcast them but in years past ABC always aired the Rose Bowl on broadcast television. Any ideas why?

Hey, at least it isn't another speculative coaching thread.

Eseentially money. ESPN gets to air the games and ABC still gets to broadcast their regular television. Sports fans probably already have ESPN or will go to a bar to watch the game. Plus theres ESPN3.com or Channelsurfing.net like I do.

If the game tonight was on ABC, ESPN would get killed in the ratings game.  Instead, ESPN will draw a huge audience and ABC will draw their usual fans to their Monday night programming.

Well it doesnt matter too much in the big picture. ABC and ESPN are both owned by Disney, so revenue-wise the best thing to do is what lilpenny said, keep the ratings and viewership up for both channels
